Take new puppy up to bed or sleep downstairs?

All of the books say different.
Would we be best taking crate upstairs for the first few nights so she is near us, or one of us sleeps downstairs?
Keen to get this right!

No photo? It's the rules on MN!!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 29/11/2020 22:36

I think it's generally thought it's better to sleep where you want them to sleep long term. Personally I have zero resistance to cute puppies & she'd be in my bed!

SlB09 · 29/11/2020 22:36

Downstairs, downstairs downstairs downstairs!!!!!
They may whimper a little for a few nights but they will be fine if snuggly, warm etc. Start as you mean to go on, it's more confusing to do it the other way and they quickly get used to being with you all the time!

Take the crate upstairs. Get the pup used to the crate then you can slowly move it over time.

My pup was upstairs for about 2 months, he's now in kitchen.

Hope you have a good nights sleep.

VicMackey · 29/11/2020 22:38

Take her to bed with you obviously 😍 doesn’t matter what any book says

DianaT1969 · 29/11/2020 22:38

I'm not an expert, but wouldn't it be easier to be downstairs near the door to take her out for her toilet breaks?

vanillandhoney · 29/11/2020 22:40

Upstairs so at least you can sleep in the bed and don't have to curl up on the floor or sofa.

dingledongle · 29/11/2020 22:42

Start as you mean to go on 😁

Our puppy stayed in our room until she could go all night without needing a wee. She now sleeps in the livingroom but was never in a crate as she reacted really badly to it.

Overseasmom100 · 29/11/2020 22:43

Ahhh they are only babies and need that reassurance. My SiL put a doggy bed next to her bed at the side and pup just slept there all night. When he whimpered she just put her hand down to pat/reassure and he went back to sleep. In morning when alarm goes off they have a ritual...she gets up takes pup straight out in garden for a wee then straight back in bed with pup for 10 mins cuddle before getting up properly

MagratsDanglyCharms · 29/11/2020 22:50

We had the crate next to the bed for about 3 nights, then out on the landing (door open), then down in the kitchen. He loves his crate now (he's 5 months old) and happily takes himself off for some quiet time. No issues after the first 5-7 days.

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/11/2020 23:09

I've never had any of my dogs upstairs in my bed that's my choice. I've left them downstairs and as a puppy I puppy proofed the room as I dont crate either.

Coffeeandcakee · 30/11/2020 00:04

Pup's in a crate upstairs with us. So far working great for toilet training. We hear her when she stirs so, two weeks in, never had a wet bed nor have we had to set an alarm to check on her/do a toilet trip or listen to her cry. She's now sleeping through the night (although does wake early) and we're in the process of moving her out the room with no problems yet. At the beginning it also meant we could pop our hand down for reassurance and keep her settled without needing to get up and out of bed. It's worked really well for us.

Smallsteps88 · 30/11/2020 00:10

I kept my boy downstairs in his crate as I was determined no dogs on the bed. Now he’s old and in his final weeks, he can’t get up the stairs anymore and I can’t lift him and I just regret all the nights I didn’t have him cuddled beside me. I just want him here. If I was ever to have another dog they will be in my bed.

CoffeethenCrochet · 30/11/2020 00:17

We had dpup bed in our room. After a few hours of putting dpup back in her bed, we gave up and she's slept in our bed ever since Grin luckily no accidents, she just whines when she needed to go out when younger.

justgeton · 30/11/2020 00:32

I was determined he wouldn't be on the sofa, never mind the bed.

Looking back I can't believe I made him sleep downstairs on his own for about a year 😢. Upstairs snuggled up with me in bed is obviously so much better. 😉

Floralnomad · 30/11/2020 00:36

I slept downstairs with ours because I didn’t want him upstairs until he was house trained , once he was reliable he moved upstairs .

AlwaysLatte · 30/11/2020 00:38

We didn't even consider taking our two upstairs. Just do it once and they'll want to do it all the time. The main reason for us was that you can't teach an old fog new tricks, and fast forward to an elderly arthritic doggie trying to negotiate steep stairs with a tile floor at the bottom... not good! We started with a crate but once she was toilet trained she now has the run of the kitchen and living room overnight. Went through a phase of having to leave the kitchen TV on for her but not now.

caringcarer · 30/11/2020 00:53

Downstairs in crate and up twice each night to take to toilet in garden. Snuggle it up with plenty of blankets. You might find the puppy goes under a blanket and not just lies on top like an older dog would.

MrsEricBana · 30/11/2020 01:08

I think crate downstairs while toilet training. We slept upstairs and took him out late and early. We didn't go to him in the night and he had maybe 4 accidents. He sleeps upstairs with me every night now and he sleeps well and I love having him near. He is on top of the duvet, squished up against me now.

MagicMabel · 30/11/2020 01:51

I slept downstairs with my puppy while he needed a wee every couple of hours. I then left him downstairs but he would wake me up at 3am or so by whining and totally sleep deprived I let him sleep on the bed with us. I wish I had brought his bed upstairs instead as he is enornous now and I am currently up having been kicked out of bed (literally). There's no moving him once he's comfortable!
Small dogs on the bed. Large dogs on the floor!

XiCi · 30/11/2020 07:47

You'll need him upstairs with you as you wont hear when they need to toilet otherwise and they may end up soiling their bed. If you want them to sleep downstairs you just wait till they are bigger and can sleep through the night and gradually move the crate away from you until you get them downstairs

SJaneS49 · 30/11/2020 17:18

Start as you mean to go on, downstairs. Presumably you don’t want to crate long term and if she’s used to upstairs she’ll end up on your bed. I’ve slept on the bed with DDog a few times, she’s a cuddler, I’m a flumper, it didn’t work for me at all (she was delighted though!)

shinynewapple2020 · 30/11/2020 17:28

We started as we meant to go on Puppy in crate in the kitchen : crate door open but kitchen door shut

Alternated with DS sleeping on sofa for the first week or so in case pup became upset, although in actual fact he was fine but it was useful to be able to get to him when he woke around 6.00

He now sleeps upstairs - he has his own duvet but sometimes chooses to sleep with us - he's in charge after all Grin

shinynewapple2020 · 30/11/2020 17:29

Where's the puppy pic anyway ?
