My friend just paid £1800 for a cockapoo. He looks very sweet and she loves him, but really.. nearly 2k for a pup?? Is that what they are now!?

Sadly so, the prices off puppies and kittens have rocketed

BertieBasset82 · 25/11/2020 09:44

@dewisant2020 it’s crazy.!

Yep sounds about right.

Demand is high right now - lockdown and WFH has meant that lots of people are able to devote time to a new puppy who wouldn't have been able to before.

fivedogstofeed · 25/11/2020 10:12

Yep. Puppy farmers are living the dream.

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 10:13

It’s a difficult one because while the holy grail of MN breeders would never do such a thing, elsewhere mortals do tend to sell things for roughly what they are worth.

No, not all breeders are charging crazy prices. I was pointed in the direction of one breeder who was due pups any day, not advertised at all. Only knew of this through another reputable breeder. Pups all born healthy but will not be going to new homes until after Christmas, which is understandable. Sign of a breeder who cares for the welfare of her pups.

blowinahoolie · 25/11/2020 10:52

Her pups will sell for what they usually would sell for in normal times.

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 10:55

Which is brilliant, but of course does run the risk of the puppies being sold on for a profit, which is the dilemma. Not an easy one.

Nymeriastark1 · 25/11/2020 11:02

We've just got a kitten, paid normal kitten price for a moggy. Wasn't a breeder owners had to get rid because new baby was allergic. When we were looking there were moggy cats and kittens on there for upwards of £400 odd quid! From litters obviously not owners looking to rehome. No way I'd pay that. Ridiculous! I must say tho she was definitely worth the £40! Grin

I didn’t know mn breeders even existed. I thought it was a cardinal sin to get a dog anywhere other than whatever unwanted cast-offs you can find in the local animal shelter (if you’re lucky enough to be able to prove to them you’re worthy of having one) Grin
Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 11:41

You are permitted to get a dog from a breeder but you must have visited Crufts, made connections with breeders, ensured that they have long waiting lists and signed with the blood of your first born child to get a puppy. Which you are only allowed as a massive favour because the breeder is just improving the breed. The cheque is purely to cover costs and the breeder has made no profit whatsoever Grin

£3000 for Cockerpoos advertised locally this week, all sold.

£3000 for Cockerpoos advertised locally this week, all sold. just wow.

Coffeeandcakee · 25/11/2020 13:53

My parents have been thinking about a pup for a while and were pointed in the direction of a "reputable breeder". Last litter sold in April for £900 a pup. This time round she asked them to make an offer but wouldn't give a price. He made an offer based on the last litter and response was "no, lol these are going for at least £2000".

They ultimately ended up meeting the breeder somewhere in the middle but she was clearly hoping to take advantage of whatever crazy offer someone was prepared to make.

My friend has just paid £2500 for a cockerpoo

HmmSureJan · 25/11/2020 13:59

Breeders would be crazy to sell at pre COVID prices because those dogs will be sold on by unscrupulous arseholes and the breeder will have lost all control of where their puppies end up. It's pure common sense to sell at market rate.

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 14:05

People feel it isn’t ethical because of the fact it involves live animals, but horses certainly have dramatically increased in price. As have houses, for that matter. Breeders are businesses and all businesses are more ethical than others. But all will aim to make a profit.

Confusion67 · 25/11/2020 15:39

We’re paying £1200 for a Labrador puppy from a KC Assured Breeder. She hasn’t changed her prices at all, and hiked them up for Covid

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 25/11/2020 15:57

£1200 for a mini poodle puppy from a KC Assured Breeder.

AriesTheRam · 25/11/2020 15:58

I saw a Frenchie advertised for 7 grand the other day

I'll give you £50 for him - gorgeous!
fedup2017 · 25/11/2020 18:54

We've just paid £2500 for a cocker puppy. Our elderly dog died of cancer earlier this year..... We couldn't face another dog for months but it's not the same without one and so started looking this summer. We were 😲 at the prices.... Especially as we wanted a KC registered one to avoid puppy farms and so on. I've actually used a small inheritance to pay for him but I try not to dwell on the money! Can't see puppy prices going down any time soon tbh.

ImnotCarolineHirons · 25/11/2020 19:45

£2.5k for Labrador retriever pups from a local breeder here. She's very good, well known, doesn't over breed, her dogs are excellent gun dog line and popular with the hunting shooting n fishing crowd here. They were £800-£900 last year.
