My friend just paid £1800 for a cockapoo. He looks very sweet and she loves him, but really.. nearly 2k for a pup?? Is that what they are now!?

Welcometonowhere I hope you're right but the rescues are expecting it will hit them.
Moggies are being sold for silly prices online, pedigrees do end up in rescues. The Cockapoos are likely easier to rehome than some of the other breeds hence not seeing rescues advertise them.
Battersea did a talk and tour for us CP volunteers a while back which from a cat perspective wasn't anything new but the dogs, well that was sobering.
My main issue is people wanting an exact pet on demand, like you order something on Amazon without thinking of the breeding conditions, the welfare of the mum etc A lot of breeders nor caring where they end up as long as they get there £££. So many people don't think of the full commitment. Often people are happy to adopt an old cat as they can't commit to 15 years plus but can give a safe home, love and are willing to pay for vet care for a cat's twilight years.

Overwhelmingly if you look at any rescue centre, the breeds available are staffs, JRTs, greyhounds and German shepherds. Not many cockerpoos at all.

There are plenty of poos coming through rescue- they’re just highly desirable so get snapped up before they hit websites etc. Lots end up in rescue because people expect them to be hypoallergenic, and they aren’t.

Staffies, GSD’s Greyhounds are big dogs that don’t have the cute fluffy rescue appeal. You tend to have to go through breed rescue if you want anything like that, bichon, yorkies, etc.

Same as rescues tend to have mainly black cats. They’re just the ones no one wants after the more desirable coat colours have been adopted.

Yes but vino the doghouse have been predicting rescues being filled with “lockdown puppies” (with some satisfied relish) for months and months now.

I cannot say confidently that no one will re sell or abandon their dog. Of course they will. But I don’t think this is inherently more likely to happen to poo crosses than others, in fact looking online the opposite would seem to be true.

There are revolting people out there. People who don’t give a shit about puppies or kittens as long as they get their Instagram worthy pet, horrible behaviour. But it isn’t horrible behaviour to want a particular breed or type that suits your family and to buy it ethically.

I agree, but lots of people seem to go for cockapoos because they don't want the coat of a poodle or energy of a spaniel. It makes no sense.

Makes total sense. We have a cockapoo- doesn't shed, was easy to train, is playful, loves long walks, and lazy days at home. He's a great family pet! What's not to like?

You can say the same about poodles though. Why did you get a cross, and not a poodle, out of interest?

Welcometonowhere · 28/11/2020 00:22

Because she wanted a cockapoo.

Why a Scottie and not a Westie? Why a Lab not a Retriever? Why a whippet not a lurcher?

People like what they like.
