Alternative to cocker?

shouldvebeenme · 21/11/2020 08:47

We had a cocker spaniel who died of age related illness 15 years ago. Am just ruminating about another dog for when I take retirement (I’ll be 60 when I go).

I think a spaniel of this size or even a bit bigger would be fine, but I would like to think about breeds other than cockers as I just feel she was irreplaceable.

Any thoughts? Requirements are sunny personality, energetic but not needing 3 hour walks, not too large a dog (can’t face the poop). Preferably a spaniel. Thanks.

What about a whippet ?
They like a walk, but apparently a bit lazy in the house so won’t mider you to play.

Marmite27 · 21/11/2020 08:53

Welsh, Clumber, Sussex, Springer?

shouldvebeenme · 21/11/2020 08:57

Have considered a whippet before, they are lovely dogs, are they cuddly though? I love a lap dog.

Climber and Sussex look like they might be a bit plodding, is that fair? Springers way too energetic for my old age.

Clumbers are much steadier than a cocker. Lovely dogs with strong personality

They are a rare breed though so if u wanted one u need to plan in advance as there will be wait lists

I’ve got a lap dog but unfortunately she’s not cuddly. She’s a very independent female ! So because of that I’d say look at the individual, not the breed.

We have a Sproodle, he's a springer and a Labradoodle cross. I know that everybody says this about their dog but he really is the most beautiful, loving, cuddly but fun and full of energy boy. I would wholeheartedly reccommend one!

MrsJunglelow · 21/11/2020 09:41

What about a working Clumber spaniel?
Not at all plodding

I'm a whippet owner and spend hours cuddling my boy . He will take as much fuss and attention as I give . Equally he's always content lying under his snuggle blanket on the sofa . Wonderful dogs

sprockerdiles · 21/11/2020 09:52

Sprocker?

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 21/11/2020 09:55

Cockapoo? I appreciate they’re a cross of two breeds but they have the sunny, energetic side of the spaniel and are just gorgeous dogs.
Mine is my little bestie. An absolute sweetheart. She loves her walks and chilled out moments / cuddles in equal measure.

vanillandhoney · 21/11/2020 10:47

What about a sprocker? Lovely dogs and very, very cuddly!

shouldvebeenme · 21/11/2020 12:07

Thanks everyone food for thought.

Go on get a cocker you love them Smile They are so different it will may not feel like replacing your dog. However you will be used to those cocker ways and those ears - . Another cocker will love to go to an experienced cocker home. Could you get another colour to make it seem different from your other cocker?

Or you could get a working cocker - no they need a lot of exercise and brain work.
A Springer - lovely lovely dogs but a bit more hyper than the cocker
Cumber spaniel - have to wait for years and years to get on the right waiting list.
Cockerpoo - just dont admit it on mn Smile but why dilute the spaniel bit that you love.

fitflopqueen · 21/11/2020 13:30

Springer lover here, in terms of energy my girl is very calm in comparison with the last four cockers I have fostered and less needy. When the time comes how about a rescue spaniel or joining as a fosterer, then see what pops up and you may get your perfect companion that way.

Stellaris22 · 21/11/2020 13:33

I don't have a whippet but would love one, they are beautiful and lovely dogs. Parents in law have two and they're an absolute joy, great recall and just sleep after a good run in the morning.

Ylvamoon · 21/11/2020 15:15

Not a Spaniel but a Tibetan Terrier (not a Terrier either!) would suit you for sunny personality, energetic but not needing 3 hour walks, not too large a dog ... ok, they are big clowns which makes them fun dogs to own. They really just go along with whatever you throw at them!

bluetongue · 23/11/2020 09:19

I have a whippet and he’s the cuddliest dog ever Smile

He loves everyone not just me. In fact he’ll go up to complete strangers, lean on them and look up at them with his ‘please give a pat I’m soooo unloved look.’

So much easier than a cocker to after with their fine coat. No doggy smell and no tracking mud into the house.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 23/11/2020 17:34

If you can find a Clumber or a Field spaniel, they are adorable. Not plodding, just slightly less hyper than some of the other spaniels.

Whippets do tend to be cuddly lap lovers.

Floralnomad · 23/11/2020 17:55

I’d go for a clumber spaniel . Incidentally the only Tibetan terrier I know is a miserable , anti social animal .

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 23/11/2020 18:01

TTs are usually stubborn and not the most obedient, but I've never met a nasty one.

airedailleurs · 23/11/2020 18:04

Bedlington terrier x whippet or lurcher is a nice combo...medium-sized dog that has a nice character and is lively but not too much.

Ylvamoon · 23/11/2020 19:06

@TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain- not the ones I have! They are very happy to please me and are trained to a high standard- think trick dog training!
I think it's about having a partnership with your dog rather than "master & servant"

Dexy1957 · 23/11/2020 19:10

I have a shnoodle absolutely gorgeous and loves lots of cuddles

Wildrobin · 23/11/2020 22:29

I can’t recommend health tested cavaliers enough. we have the most fun, affectionate , sporty and undemanding little dog. I could throw in more superlatives but she charms even my mum who doesn’t normally like dogs and i have only met completely lovely ones . Ours is calm but also can be playful and full of character and fun.
Knowledgeable breeders are especially important for this breed who health test both parents etc
