We got back from work today and ddog seemed off. He's thrown up a few times (just foam with grass in) he keeps going out in the garden to throw up more. We've had about 8 emergency vet trips in the night since we got him because he's been sick for various reasons and we've paid well over £100 just for him to have an injection and throw up.

He really doesn't seem right. He's lying down and settling for a bit and then whimpering and whining which isn't like him. Just let him out again and he ate some more grass. Came back up resettled and now he's walking around whining again. No idea if he's ate something he shouldn't have or not, we don't think so but we weren't here when this started.

I don't mean to make it about money but we are so tight at the moment and I haven't got another £120 to be told he just has a bit of a bad belly. I just want to hang on until the morning but also worried something could be really wrong. I'm always overly paranoid but not sure if I'm right to be here.

I feel awful he's obviously more important than money I'm just so worried as he don't have it

What breed is he? How old is he?

Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:15

He's 3. King Charles cavalier

Newname4now · 06/11/2020 00:16

Is he still drinking?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/11/2020 00:16

Sorry I have no advice for you, just want to say that I hope your dog gets better soon.

Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:16

Yes still drinking hasn't ate though

Henio · 06/11/2020 00:17

Sounds like he really needs to see a vet tonight, I wouldn't be comfortable leaving my dog over night if they felt that unwell, hope he gets better soon Flowers

Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:18

Thank you. If it sounds urgent I'll take him and have to borrow the money from someone. I just know I've overreacted in the past and rushed him in to just be told he's got a bit of a bad stomach that's all and it's so much money just to be told that. I'm trying to not be so paranoid somethings wrong all the time but when it happens I just panic and rush to the vet like I'm thinking of doing now.

Wispygypsy · 06/11/2020 00:20

Is he looking bloated? I was wondering about Gdv but it's more common in deep chested large breeds

Wispygypsy · 06/11/2020 00:21

Could he have eaten something he shouldn't?

Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:22

Yes could of eaten something, he has a tendency to do so but I don't get what he could of eaten. Nothing dangerous would of been left out. I just can't think what it would of been.

OP posts:
Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:24

He does feel a bit bloated yes

I think you have to hope for a vet or vet nurse to answer your question as no one unqualified would risk saying leave it for now.

If your pup has been ill several times since birth it suggests an underlying issue.
My dog was sick a lot and had extensive (and expensive) investigations which never gave any real clue as to the problem. She just had a very sensitive stomach and feeding her raw in the end turned out to be the best solution for her.

Wispygypsy · 06/11/2020 00:26

It's so hard to say, possible symptoms of ingesting a foreign body and it causing an obstruction. Equally it could be something like gastroenteritis... if he isn't settling and you're worried, I'd at least call the out of hours vet and see what they advise.

JeVoudrais · 06/11/2020 00:27

Sorry OP but I would do vets now. Have you got insurance?

Krazynights34 · 06/11/2020 00:28

It could be anything OP. I have two beagles. They have eaten/swallowed beer bottle tops, pineapple cores, candles, soap, nappies, hot curries... you get the idea.
One of them had to have surgery after she’d ingested a piece of WIRE.
Your dog could be intolerant to the food he regularly eats ?

AnyName1 · 06/11/2020 00:28

If it was my dog I'd just let him eat the grass and drink water for the night. He's eating the grass to induce vomiting. And keep him away from carpets.

Newname4now · 06/11/2020 00:28

I am not a dog owner, I have had cats for many years. If my cats have been able to take in fluids, wee, mobilise and have no obvious injuries I have waited until the morning. Not that I have got much sleep mind.
You know how out of character the behaviour is and I guess that's key at the moment, particularly in comparison to other bouts of illness

AnyName1 · 06/11/2020 00:30

Sorry, I missed that he was whimpering. Probably vet needed then.

Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:31

The vet has said before there's no signs of any underlying conditions and that dogs do throw up sometimes and like how we just feel sick sometimes if he does he'll eat grass to get it out. I've rushed him in almost every time he has thrown up more than once/twice in a 24hr period so just hesitant to do so again. It's just whimpering is unusual! I've gone back to work 1 day a week so he was alone today 8-4 and I got home to him like this. Just no idea what's wrong and it's so typical it's happened when I wasn't hear to see if he's eaten anything. Also a bloody bird had got in somehow and he'd shut himself in a room with it! No idea how long he'd been in there and he must of been going nuts at this bird for however long. I thought maybe he was being sick from getting so worked up at it but it was just guesswork. I'm guessing it won't be that if he still doesn't seem right.

Helpdogissick · 06/11/2020 00:32

The first day I've left him to go to work since my mat leave and this has happened! Sad

OP posts:
3dogsandababy · 06/11/2020 00:33

If a bird got in is it possible he's eaten some bird poo? Not sure if that would've caused his to react like this as all my dogs do is roll in it

Newname4now · 06/11/2020 00:34

You poor thing, that all sounds a bit rubbish. If the vets is 24 hours and you would pay the same fee and you feel comfortable could you wait and see for a little longer if he settles ?
