What do you feed your dog?

Dog is currently 17 weeks and has been weaned onto red mills chicken and rice kibble. I thought he would be getting used to it now but is just having horrid poos with diarrhoea and generally just farting constantly.
I had heard good things about this food, but obviously it's just not agreeing with him.

Our puppy had an upset stomach for months when she was younger. We tried lots of different foods and eventually moved her onto step up to naturals from pets at home and rarely have any issues now

Sitdowncupoftea · 02/11/2020 22:11

One of mine that has a sensitive stomach is on chappie. The vet recommended it, it works. No more diarrhoea.

Ironmanrocks · 02/11/2020 22:17

OH is a vet. They often recommend chappie funnily enough. We have always used hills or royal canin dried food. It has to be good quality. You can get varieties for sensitive tummy etc as well. Hope they get better. Also no human food/treats till they are settled!!

Girlintheframe · 03/11/2020 06:30

We use Millies wolf heart. He's been on it for a couple of years now. Big improvement in poos. They are formed, firm and easy to pick up.
He was on JW when we got him but it made his smelly and his poo loose.

outwest · 03/11/2020 07:05

Another vote for Millies Wolfheart - agree that it results in firm, very well-formed poo. If we accidentally run out and feed him on other stuff you can, er, see the difference.

CarinaMarina · 03/11/2020 07:07

Was just going to say Millies Wolfheart! My 10 month old pup gets loose poos and smelly wind with anything poultry based, but Millies is poultry and grain free.

BiteyShark · 03/11/2020 07:17

My dog has a chronic condition but we didn't really know that for many months. I think kibble was just too harsh on his stomach as well as being tasteless and boring for him as his poos were always soft as a puppy/young dog.

So we now feed a good quality wet food. Anything around 60% up of a named meat suits him. Have used millieswolfheart, forthglade, carnilove. Natures menu, aatu. We swop them around to keep his interest.

CatsAndEyeliner · 03/11/2020 10:19

Raw feeding is great for poos: tiny, well formed, not smelly.

Generally speaking: The higher the pure meat content in food the better their poos will be. Plus the bone content helps to firm things up.

Todaytomorrow09 · 03/11/2020 10:22

We feed raw as well since she was 8 weeks old - small firm poos & not smelly.
We use a company pre-made rather than DIY raw feeding and it’s worked out well - happy 3 year old dog now.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 03/11/2020 11:22

Hills & Royal Canin are expensive and low quality for the price. They get good press with vets because unfortunately, vets get kickbacks from them but if you look at nutrition comparison sites, the ingredients and the macro nutrients are poor.

Mine is on Millie’s Wolfheart and Forthglade wet (he likes the combo of textures). We had similar issues with soft poo and I’ve tried all sorts of different foods (all 90% or above on allaboutpetfood) and this gives us the best outcome.

I like Gentle too but it comes in paper sacks and they aren’t great at keeping the smell in, so wherever you store the sacks stinks of dog food. Plus, it is cold pressed so each sack only lasts 6months. Not ideal if you like to buy in bulk (I do).

I like Acana Regionals but the kibble size is a bit small for my large breed and actually, I think it may have been a bit too high protein for him (we use one of the 70/30 Millie’s recipes).

40somethingJBJ · 03/11/2020 15:02

Mine is currently on a mixture of Wolf of Wilderness dry and Rocco wet food. Used to feed Forthglade wet, but I think they must’ve changed the recipe in the last year or so, as my girl gets horrendous constipation on it now.

We raw fed for a couple of years, but just couldn’t get to a stage where we had solid poo! Tried DIY and completes and nothing seemed to agree with her (she has form for having a bit of a delicate stomach).

She also gets sardines and scrambled eggs a couple of times a week, plus natural, dried meat treats (tripe/rabbits ears etc).

Funf · 03/11/2020 17:54

Burns mix of wet pouches and dry complete food, never human food, but her and her sister thrive on it, her sister is a show winner ours is just a scruff, but happy health dog with firm easy to collect poo!
Used Royal Canning dry in the past with an Itchy dog worked well

Temporarything · 03/11/2020 20:27

Lily’s Kitchen. And some posh organic kibble stuff that she doesn’t like much.

CatsAndEyeliner · 04/11/2020 08:07

@Temporarything if you’re happy then no bother but just FYI that Lily’s Kitchen sold to Nestle earlier this year.

MaitlandGirl · 04/11/2020 08:10

Royal Canin urinary S/O for our bitch and BlackHawk Grain Free Small Breed for the boys.

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 04/11/2020 08:14

Butternut Box... 2 years and he still hasn’t gone off it, after a few years of turning his nose up at food after the first couple of weeks of novelty had worn off.

Raw food for my dogs - they come in complete packages just defrost and serve. One of mine was a rescue who used to be sick after every meal. She's thrived on raw food. But you do need to do a bit of research - there's some great Facebook groups and dogsdinner2.webs.com/ some excellent information on this website.

Temporarything · 04/11/2020 13:15

Thanks for heads up re Nestle 👍

coffeewithmilk · 04/11/2020 20:31

Thank you all so much for your replies!
He has a routine check up at the vet soon so will mention it to her and I'll do some research on what you've all recommended!
Thanks!

Raw food - I’m using Luna & me - dog loves the patties and all the treats

Sixgeese · 04/11/2020 20:39

We feed our almost 2 years old cavapoo Wolf of the wilderness dry food and give natural treats like ears and tripe which an often get from Dragonfly Products.

When we got him at 5 months old he was being fed lidls wet food and was doing over 10 very loose poos a day, we tried so many types of dry food, and wet foods and nothing firmed his poos up until we got a small pack of Wolf of the Wilderness in a variety puppy food and treats pack from zooplus.

He is still a pooey dog, but at least I can pick them up cleanly and no longer have to carry water and kitchen roll on every walk to clean up after him.

ThatLibraryMiss · 04/11/2020 20:47

I'm another raw feeder. Small Dog loves it and thrives on it. Because he's small it's not easy making sure his meals are balanced if I buy separate chunks of heart, liver, lung, muscle etc so I use complete minces from Paleo Ridge. When I've used up what's in the freezer I plan to try the complete minces from Durham Animal Feeds.

KenDodd · 04/11/2020 20:51

I feed my dog, dog food.

Just a heads up that some vets will react to raw as if you've suggested poisoning your dog. I've been told that they get told very little about feeding pets during their course, and what they do get is sponsored by big pet food companies. If you want to try it it's easiest to use the complete mixes such as I mentioned above.
FreshFreesias · 04/11/2020 21:01

Minced meat mixed with leftovers like veg, rice etc, good quality wet food/dried biscuits.
Dogs have been given our scraps for thousands of years, it’s a shame the pet food industry has demonised this with the result that many feed their dogs with low quality and unpalatable dried food.
