Tell me about your Borders or Welsh Collies please.
I've had a collie a while ago now and I've looked through posts about Collies and 90% of the time they are getting a rough deal. My collie was as good as gold so I thought perhaps it was a fluke but I've seen a couple of posters complimenting them so I'm looking for more of that.

@MrsJunglelow 'they aren’t a breed I would say is an ideal choice for a first time/amateur owner with rambunctious children/hectic family home'

So true, that is exactly where my rescue came from. He has all kinds of barmy triggers because they had the 4 year old teach him 'tricks' but they failed to socialise him with dogs/strangers or lead train him. 🤷🏼‍♀️ And collies never forget something learned!

fivedogstofeed · 28/10/2020 11:04

I do worry that by posting on here that collies are easy dogs it does give the impression they will fit into an situation

Actually yes, I completely agree with this. The other issue is that there is a huge variation in collies, from the stressy to the completely laid back and unless you get a really well assessed one from a collie rescue then you won't be sure of which end of the spectrum you are getting.

@PollyRoulson do you mind me asking which rescue you work with? By pm if you prefer

Orkneys · 28/10/2020 11:10

A had a collie when my kids were young brilliant dog and I still pine after her now. As I say this is a compliment thread for collies no need for negative. I understand what you mean I see a young collie about he's obviously stressed and needs more it's a shame really. However, you are welcome to make your own thread to vent.

Oh alright then! Grin

My girl with my DD (her face is in the original photo!)
When we had chickens, she used to love herding them around the garden but wasn’t allowed to do so in the house so she just used to lie down and stare at them.
The chickens used to jump all over her in the house.
And with the cat.

Orkneys · 28/10/2020 12:07

MrsJunglelow

She is beautiful I'm in love. Where did you get her from?

OP posts:
PollyRoulson · 28/10/2020 12:28

Sorry if you meant me venting - not at all. I will fight to the death to promote and advocate for collies to the right home.

I have 6 of my own and usually several fosters. They are all very different but always have the collie serenity and intelligence. The bond between the collies is an extremely special thing and I am grateful everyday for being in a situation to have collies.

Working collies with sheep is just the best thing ever. Their ability to know exactly what to do and when, to cover up my mistakes and do the right thing regardless is amazing.

One of my youngsters is a search and rescue dog. He has found many vunerable people and I you can just see the relief in these people when they are greeted and found by a big smiling gentle collie. He then tends to stay with them until they are taken away, so will sit leaning on them in transport of leaning on them when they are walked back to safety. He really does know who needs his support and when. Not demanding just supportive. Rest of the time he is a loony pretending to herd the chickens Smile

Fivedogstofeed I have a background in behaviour so behaviourists contact me re the foster collies, they are then assessed and sent to the relevant collie rescues. They have gone to many rescues across the UK. But if you want a rescue collie I can certainly help Smile

Mine is best dog IN THE WORLD.

He’s just turned 15 and going downhill and I’m heartbroken at the thought of him going.

He’s from Wiccaweys, they have the best collies ❤️

Aww I'm sorry. Would you have another?

I'm sure I've looked at their site before I'm collie mad so I'm always looking and researching the breed.

Six??!! Do they work? sorry if you've already said do they think having more is easier or harder? Do they all get on?

I have been looking at pauldens collies for a while but think they are more show dogs and she's always got litters so not sure about that. Prefer farm bred collies.

OP posts:
DartmoorDoughnut · 28/10/2020 15:07

Honestly I’m not sure if I will, he’s so special and my soul dog and I worry that another of the same breed it will always have the disadvantage of not being him if you see what I mean? We also have a border terrier who is very sweet and I may just stick to them as although I love him and will be very sad when he goes (he’s 9 so hopefully only half way) I don’t think I’ll be as broken as I will be when my collie boy goes

DartmoorDoughnut · 28/10/2020 15:25

Oh and personally I believe a lot of ‘bad’ behaviour in collies comes from a bad diet and not enough brain games, in my limited experience they don’t need lots of long walks they do need interaction and brain games/training.

100% DartmoorDoughnut. I am alot more knowledgeable now I think than when I had my collie 10 years ago. I have thought about having another and I've seen a fair amount of slating collies on here so it put me off thought my girl was a one off she was a little angel. Brilliant with everything recall, kids, people, cats, hamsters didn't have a bad bone in her body never chewed pinched food a long list of good behaviour. I adore collies and I'd really like another this thread has given me confidence that I might find another like her and the people mostly giving negative comments are people who've never had them.

Honesty once you’re ready have a chat with Sarah and Paul at Wiccaweys, my boy was 9 weeks when I got him and they have collies of all ages in all shapes and sizes and they’re brilliant at matching the right dog with the right family Smile

I agree but I do also think there is a big problem of nervousness within the breed, which leads to bigger problems, like the noise phobias @PollyRoulson mentioned.

I think part of the problem is when farmers opt to rear the pups like livestock in barns/outhouses with minimal human interaction and exposure to different sights and smells.
I think another issue, as with every other breed, is the indiscriminate breeding for profit where any old bitch and any old dog is put together with no thoughts for temperament.

Diet is a funny one.
It is my opinion that all animals do best on their natural diet so collies therefore, should be raw fed.
But many ‘collie people’ opt for quite poor, high grain, low protein foods.
Mine was reared on workers wagg and the CSJ k9 range of foods by Ceri Rundle, a very famous sheepdog handler are similarly ‘poor’.

Training/brain games.
I think it depends on the dog.
Mine thrives on calm walks and could very happily walk all day.
Any mind games/training has to be in small doses because she can get incredibly agitated and overstimulated very easily.
I do think sometimes that ‘hyper, stressy, unable to switch off’ collies are just overstimulated and given some time to relax and de compress would be a lot easier to handle.

And to answer your question, she came from a sheep farm in Warwickshire, I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think her breeder is breeding anymore.

I have a recue cross from Turkey, has nipped one of the grandchildren, a good few years ago now, but she got a good telling off, and has not done it since, but we are always careful and make sure is taken out of any situation that could enable a nip.
Having said that, she is absolutely fine with my other dog, fine with two cats. But hates other dogs outside, would bite them if she got close enough, so is on a long lead. I try to go to a secure field twice month, where she is let off and can run totally free.
Although a pest, I do think the world of her, very loving.
She can be quite lazy too, sometimes has to be persuaded to go out.
Does not like the rain at all.
Would love to know what the other breed is

Dont you recommend CSJ? as I say I'm slightly obsessed with collies so I know about this company and researched endlessly.

I wonder if it’s Wiccaweys who have Fat Ted..
I was looking at the BC rescue pages the other day and came across him, can’t remember which rescue it was now but what a sweetheart!
I doubt he’d like my house very much as it can be quite noisy with the kids but what a cutie he is 😍

TheseAreTheRichesOfThePoor · 28/10/2020 16:11

Mine is the greatest. In fact we are looking for another dog and I'm only looking at collies. She's just gorgeous and a great family dog.

MrsJunglelow · 28/10/2020 16:12

I think their herb supplements are fantastic and I certainly think Ceri is an incredibly knowledgeable and skilled handler.
I don’t feed her foods though because I can’t get over how poor the ingredients seem.
I can’t quite bring myself to feed a carnivore such a low meat food

This is my lovely girl. We got her at 12 weeks so not a rescue but our older girl is a rescue collie cross.

She's as soft as mud and is a cuddle monster with a serious tennis ball addiction.
