hello all - will hopefully link from the old one!

just realised we'll all have fireworks night to get through shortly. Went out for a walk with dpuppy who is getting much better at walking though we met a big dog which scared him a lot! We can only get him into puppy classes in November which is a shame but at least it's something

@HappyThursdays I’m stressing about the lockdown and no classes too! Retrieverpup is due her second lot of vaccinations on the 10th. Does anyone know if these will still go ahead in lockdown? I’m not sure what happened last time. Everyone has said the biting gets a lot better when they can go out and walk and that thought has been the thing that’s kept me going!

HappyThursdays · 01/11/2020 09:39

Our vets stayed open @Retrievemysanity but I'm not sure every one did

Not to want to depress you further but I don't think walking is helping us that much but I do think our dpuppy is v v v boisterous. He's certainly the most boisterous puppy I have seen out and about.

We have had to order another front linked harness because the halti isn't padded enough for him (small dog size doesn't have padding) and he is far better walking with a front linked harness.

I will remain ever positive and hopeful OP Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/11/2020 11:03

Pretty sure vets will still do vaccinations - they’re essential for a dog’s health.

HappyThursdays · 01/11/2020 11:58

It was actually easier to see the vet than the Gp last lockdown Smile

Can puppies go into their adolescence stage early?! Bearpup will be 4 months next week and we seem to have lost all training knowledge. Just does not listen to a word I say. On the plus side he is far less of a land shark, only nips when tired or very hyper

ZombiePara · 01/11/2020 13:00

@HappyThursdays definitely try it.. they also do a similar option with heart which works just as well

In terms of lockdown, take the time to really bond with pup, get his training as sorted as you can with you and DP and pup.. then as it hopefully eases slowly introduce distractions again.

How are you training pup to lie down?

And also, what do you do when you say "come"?

For tiring him out.. as well as walks definitely try mind games with him. Snuffle mats, puzzle toys.. something where he needs to work his brain!

Hi!
We have just got an 9 week old Labrador pup. I came into the forum looking for tips for having a new pup.
My family have always had labs when I was growing up. But our little Coco is so bitey with the kids I’ve never known it before. Our labs growing up just weren’t that bad! Every time my son who is 4 is near she jumps at him and ends up getting hold of his top or shirt and he just doesn’t get it, he thinks she doesn’t love him.
We have only had her a week so I know it’s early days, it’s just a little demoralising.

BlondieJ · 01/11/2020 17:17

Really good to hear that! You imagine this instant special bond, so really good to know if it’s not instalove that it isn’t all lost ☺️

Mummyme87 · 01/11/2020 17:28

Gutted our puppy classes will end. Second one is tomorrow night, should be 4 left.

Atalune · 01/11/2020 19:09

Hi! Can I please say hello and join in? We got our 10 week old Jack-Tzu today and she is lovely. Sleepy today but had a bit of a lark about and played with a chew toy. We are on day one. 😬😬

Awwww cute @Atalune

@BlondieJ we have the same problem with our lab and our 4 year old DD. I think because she's the smallest person in the house, Pup thinks she's an ideal play mate. I was really hoping our classes would address this but now it's full lockdown I doubt they'll be running. Gutted as we only had 1 last week and 4 to go! My only tip is keep the puppy on a leash around the kids. At 8/9 weeks it was still warm so kids would be in the garden and pup in the pen. Since it got colder these past few weeks and puppy got bigger, we are all indoors more and I just keep kids away from the dog. They are now used to being upstairs a lot as puppy has our front room. Then when you know puppy is a bit more predictable or in a calmer sleepy mood, let kid into room. I wait til she's in a nice relaxed-but-not-overtired-therefore-bitey mood, got a bully stick/pizzle and let DD sit with us a bit. She's around 17 weeks now and much better, however will still jump up unless I'm really on her with commands and distractions.

Atalune · 01/11/2020 20:14

I’m a bit worried that she hasn’t made a peep. She’s happy enough, running aboit chewing on her toys and has eaten and drank a bit.

Where are people putting their puppy training pads?

We didn't use puppy pads, just take outside every half hour. I think many people believe it will delay training if you allow them to go inside even on a pad.
newpup123 · 01/11/2020 20:49

Is anyone trying to teach pup to settle down on an evening? Newpup will sit on her blanket for as long as I throw treats into it, but doesnt really settle down unless she wants to. She can't be trusted to be wandering round the house on her own and I want to sit on the sofa!!

HappyThursdays · 01/11/2020 21:12

Hi @ZombiePara, re 'come' we call his name and he is pretty good when he is not interested in something else. But if he is distracted by anything, he won't respond no matter how good the treat is. He is getting better I think (I hope!), I also don't think we are doing enough training per day. I work FT and have been so busy and with it getting dark, we were missing the daylight so we have decided to up the time we do dedicated training from next week.

He's good with sit now and he sits before meals (automatically), he will sit for a treat and with a bit of patience, he will sit when out on a walk if we are crossing but you have to be patient because when out on a walk he won't do it first time.

Lie down he just can't seem to get. I put a treat in front of him and lower it down but he just dips to get it.

The woman running the puppy classes has just rung to offer us zoom classes instead so we are going to take those up as I think it will be useful just to speak to someone.

He also loves small children but this is a big issue when out as if they approach him he will charge towards them and jump up and he's not getting any smaller and he's also quite strong and I'm starting to worry that he's going to knock a toddler over so I want to nip that in the bud right now. I did read in one of the cocker books about boisterous cockers and getting them to sit before greeting someone new so I'm thinking of trying that

@Atalune dpuppy didn't learn to bark till v recently and he's 3 months now. They are quiet when little other than whimpering for a bit!

@newpup123 dpuppy will chew his antler of an evening! We sit in the lounge on the sofa and he's allowed in the lounge and the kitchen (where his bed is) and often he will just flop on the lounge floor when we are watching tv. He's shut off from the rest of the house though!

(I work from home as does dp so he does flop around the lounge a bit anyway)

OP posts:
Retrievemysanity · 01/11/2020 22:05

@HappyThursdays we do lie down by putting the treat on the floor with our hand flat over the top. She has to lie down to reach it. We’ve managed roll over following that too. Well, I say we, my 9 year old gets her to do it!

CanSomeoneElsePickMyName · 01/11/2020 22:07

@ZombiePara thanks for that. The face shape and body shape said standard but the colour threw me! Used to work for someone who had two black standards. Wonderful girls. Grin

I think we (DH!) need to be consistent not allowing on sofa as she spends half an hour looking sad that she's not allowed up when I'm there. She did give in eventually tonight though and is currently asleep on blanket on floor 👍 I win 😂

Hi *@ZombiePara*, re 'come' we call his name and he is pretty good when he is not interested in something else. But if he is distracted by anything, he won't respond no matter how good the treat is. He is getting better I think (I hope!), I also don't think we are doing enough training per day. Okay cool, so for "down"... get him in a sit position, and then with a treat in your hand guide it past his nose and almost along his chest in a downward direction towards legs/feet. In theory he should smell and want the treat, but by guiding it close to his chest he wont be able to just sup and get it.. it's too close to his body to do that. So he has to lie down?

I know ZombiePup dislikes a down, and my friends dog hates it because it takes him further away from the treat 😂

If that makes no sense let me know and I'll try and rephrase it better!

For a come/here I would definitely try and use a specific word rather than just his name...but totally okay for, eg, 'ZombiePup here' or 'here ZombiePup'.
Also, like you see in movies etc, spread your arms wide and welcoming, say it in the most excited voice possible, couple of hand slaps on the thighs, and of course, high value treats!
