hello all - will hopefully link from the old one!

just realised we'll all have fireworks night to get through shortly. Went out for a walk with dpuppy who is getting much better at walking though we met a big dog which scared him a lot! We can only get him into puppy classes in November which is a shame but at least it's something

That's really interesting @fluckityfluckfluck - I can see logically why that would work!

Poor silly pup didn't get the bells at all but our biggest problem is that we haven't found a treat he is really that bothered about. We made a roast beef last week and of course he loved that but I can't be cooking him nice stuff like that for treats! He doesn't like dog peanut butter, bananas, ham, any of the puppy treats you can buy. He does like beef. He did like the grated cheese I tried but I'm a bit worried about him having too much.

What are you all using as treats? I fear if we don't find one soon, he won't get the weeing outside = treat thing!

Have you tried blueberries? Sid loves them. And frozen peas.... he plays with them for ages too Grin

Mummyme87 · 30/10/2020 20:16

Mummypup loves cheese cubes, cheese in a tube, chicken. Not fussed on ham, banana and haven’t tried her on peanut butter yet. Also loves veg!

HappyThursdays · 30/10/2020 20:32

Oooh those are all excellent ideas! I will try them, thanks so much! X

We picked up our girl today, I hope you don't mind me jumping in to join you!
My nearly 4yo daughter is going to require significant training on how to not behave around her though, kinda wondering what we've gotten ourselves into!

@HappyThursdays I boiled several chicken breasts in a pan. Then just Pull the meat apart with 2 forks, spread out on a baking tray, put in freezer. Once frozen all the separate bits can be tipped into a tub and then I just get a handful out each morning for treat allowance.

newpup123 · 30/10/2020 21:20

@fluckityfluckfluck I have been putting mine on a normal lead In the house sometimes. It definitely helps. My friend recommended a slip lead for behaviour correction, I presume that's what the trainer suggested?

Welcome!

I have a 5yo & 7yo. To be honest the biting has put them off interfering too much for the first few weeks. As it gets better they are getting more involved. My 5yo was scattering kibble on the floor earlier for pup to sniff out and she was responding to her really well & sitting on her command. I think it's important the pups know the children are "above" them in the pecking order, try to discourage her playing on the floor too much and be stood up for interactions
@ZombiePara oh my. What breed is your pup?
He's a standard poodle!

ZombiePup goes crazy for chicken - had the thought yesterday of buying frozen precooked chicken strips (like from asda or iceland) and defrosting some overnight.

Other than chicken, we were recommended to use dried organs by the trainer, and it worked well today - lamb lung chunks. Seems to work and breakable into smaller bits..

He seems really meh over doggy peanut butter, loves ham, iffy on cheese and iffy on hotdogs..

Basically to correct behaviour and to give me the confidence to handle him again. He's been a completely different pup tonight. The trainer also said not to allow on the couch as it's him exerting dominance and I can't believe how well he accepted it... once of twice I had to pull him off and say off and then he just settled in his bed. Being honest I think poor Sid was as stressed and unhappy as I was

@Crappyfridays7 we’ve had our golden girl 2 weeks too. Wonder if they’re from the same litter! She is sooooo bitey. We’ve used a pet buggy to get her used to being out and about, saves your arms!

HappyThursdays · 31/10/2020 06:46

@ZombiePara have to say I had a chuckle at lamb lung chunks Grin. I think I will go and speak to the butcher because I bet he would love that

@fluckityfluckfluck so glad you had a better evening. Incredible how useful it is for someone to watch from the outside. They should have trainers for parents too shouldn't they Grin - I could have done with it a few times! Fingers crossed the improvements continue and you and Sid become happier!

Puppypuppypuppy · 31/10/2020 07:22

Can you give puppies raw veg? Mine is 11 weeks. I’ve been really cautious about introducing new food but maybe I am over thinking!

fluckityfluckfluck · 31/10/2020 08:23

Sid eats raw broccoli and apples... he mastered the dog flap unassisted this morning! And no snarling or biting at all. Fingers crossed this continues,

Retrievemysanity · 31/10/2020 08:26

Retrieverpup’s frozen carrots are raw. Not tried any other veg yet.

Crappyfridays7 · 31/10/2020 09:27

@Retrievemysanity
Alfie is from Lilly’s litter born 20/08 in Staffordshire. My hands are wrecked though, my boyfriends top was full of holes yesterday so hopefully we can get on top of that a bit this week I know it’s normal to an extent.

Alfie eats raw carrot and what a mess but might try freezing them.

Retrievemysanity · 31/10/2020 12:01

@Crappyfridays7 not the same then but Retrieverpup was born 17/08 and we are Midlands too! Yes, we have holes in clothes, teeth marks in arms and legs. It’s hard because we have two DD’s and the eldest with SEN is quite scared of pup now Sad Be interesting to hear how you get on over the coming weeks!

Crappyfridays7 · 31/10/2020 15:40

@Retrievemysanity we are forth valley in Scotland but fair drive to pick our fluff ball up. I think the biting is a phase, but really hope it settles down, will be nice to see how your pup is getting on too with them being same age. My youngest is sen so I understand re finding it difficult he’s been ok so far my 11 year old has struggled more mind you, but hopefully it’ll settle and things will improve as it’s hard when all they want to do is tear strips of everyone.

TriSeaSwim99 · 31/10/2020 16:35

Just abit of encouragement our pup is now 6.5mths, but when she was 3mths my youngest DD (9yrs), was really struggling to bond with her due to the biting and jumping. We had a few days away and left puppy with DH, she said I’m not missing pup. BUT when we got home the puppy chose her to sit and cuddle with and my DD had The Biggest grin & said it was the best puppy cuddle ever and they have been best buddies since Smile. Just those 3days gave the re-set we needed. (DH was shattered though 🤣) so hang in there this bitey phase does pass ...eventually.. my DD also got a lot better at “reading” the puppy’s mood and stepping back before she gets an overtired nippy thing.

Retrievemysanity · 31/10/2020 16:47

@TriSeaSwim99 that’s good to know!

Crappyfridays7 · 31/10/2020 17:18

@TriSeaSwim99 thank you does help to hear that, hopefully that’ll happen soon

They are dried! These are the ones I had for him, although there are other suppliers, and I'd recommend ones that are in smaller chunks

HappyThursdays · 01/11/2020 08:29

@ZombiePara dried lamb lung chunks does sound better Grin

Well I am sad about the lockdown. I think it means no puppy classes for us which is really frustrating because dpuppy needs them really badly. We live in 2 places (mine and dp's) and one is v rural and isolated where dpuppy can run loads off lead and one is in London with no garden but dpuppy meets lots of people on walks etc. We will probably go and lockdown in the rural place but it is v isolating for a whole month!

How are you all doing with training? Dpuppy is great at knowing his name and sitting but that's it Grin. He doesn't get 'down' at all and I think 'come' works as long as there's no leaf blowing, other dogs, smells, people I.e not well at all!

We were out in London all day yesterday and small children kept approaching him and stroking him. In one cafe, dpuppy was asleep on the floor next to me and a small child, like age 4/5, came up behind me without me seeing and literally pounced on him. He turned on his back as if to snap at her but luckily didn't actually bite her but fgs. I never let my kids approach and touch a dog without asking the owner and I would never have let a small child pounce on a sleeping dog fgs! Dpuppy is still quite bitey if tormented or if over tired and it did make me realise how careful we need to be as there are a lot of stupid parents out there!
