Talk me out out of impulse puppy purchase!

We decided we wanted to get a dog a few months ago. Did our research, decided on a lab and a local training club and agreed to wait until after Christmas before looking for a puppy. Have two cats and one ds who is 7.

I was just supposed to be having a look at puppy prices in our area.

There is an 11 week old Jack Russel girl, gorgeous but the saddest looking thing. In a metal cage without even a blanket.

Being advertised as having all her KC papers, vaccine card etc. but is being sold as she is ‘an unwanted birthday gift’ Angry

Talk me down.

I know there are many sensible reasons why it isn’t a great idea to leap in to my car and go get her. But if it’s possible to fall in love with a photo I think I just have. I know they are sharks at this age but though inexperienced I few I can handle it (joined an excellent group on Facebook recommended on here).

(Possibly relevant information - have just had a miscarriage, confirmed as complete three days ago. Hormones/emotions are all over the place at the moment.)

Oh I loved reading your story.

Ten years ago I had a horrendous late first trimester miscarriage after years of trying for DC3 and costing us thousands in IVF. I knew that was it; that we wouldn’t be trying again.

We bought a white Jack Russell Cross from a lady we knew who had a litter of puppies (really not the way to get a puppy but we’ve redeemed ourself by adding in rescues since).

We called her Poppy.

She’s been the most wonderful thing I’ve ever had come into in my life after the DDs. I’ve always called her my silver lining. She’s getting old now and I can’t imagine life without her - I adore her so much and she’s brought me so much joy. Her feisty Jack Russell personality is like no dog I’ve had before and I love it. She’s so much fun and embraces everything in her life with so much gusto. She’s not been the easiest dog - we had to work hard at obedience/ trick/ agility classes for years just to keep her crazy brain stimulated - but she’s given us so many laughs and wonderful memories.

I really hope your Poppy brings you as many years of joy as mine has.

Don't do it

Worriesandwobbles · 27/10/2020 06:47

How are you and puppy getting on @AtomicTit ?

MotherofTerriers · 27/10/2020 07:03

Long term terrier person here.
Dogs and kids growing up had much fun, no snappiness at all. Great wee dogs.
You’ve done a kind deed, poor little pup

Hyperfish101 · 27/10/2020 07:05

Poor dog.

Hyperfish101 · 27/10/2020 07:06

Meant to add. Pressed post too soon . She’s lucky now though and I would have done same.

fruitpastille · 27/10/2020 08:22

We have an adorable rescue JRT - she is so affectionate and easy to look after. So pleased to read you are keeping yours!

FancyNancyl · 27/10/2020 08:48

Congratulations. I have a rescue terrier and she was in a outdoor concrete floor cage when we went to get her. Not even a bit of old towel to sleep on. Now she sleeps on velvet.

gubbbbbddaaaa · 27/10/2020 10:41

Go and get her!

MabelMoo23 · 27/10/2020 10:57

I’ve just read the whole thread. Having suffered several miscarriages I totally get it.

I’m so pleased Poppy has a new home. Also awaiting pics!!

Hemlock2013 · 27/10/2020 11:38

I have a lovely jrt cross with two kids and they are all very compatible! Jrt dogs need to be confident and not fear based, training and socialisation helps with that, but a happy dog that isn’t frightened is perfect for any family.

I love mine so much. Best thing we did. I’m so happy for you that you got poppy x

Onlyonewayout · 27/10/2020 13:00

Such a lovely story. Sounds like Poppy has found herself a family 💕

Sunnydaysstillhere · 27/10/2020 13:13

3 pages and no pics??
Not much of a ddoggy owner op!!

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 13:15

I've got a JRT that I love, but never again!!! Jack Russells are not easy dogs.

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 13:17

Jack Russells are prone to digestive problems and allergies

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 13:18

JRTs are KC a recognised pedigree breed

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 13:25

Our dog has bitten every member of his family and several good friends. I know lots of JRT owners, some have angels and lots have devils like ours. I would NEVER trust him with children.

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 13:28

They ARE a recognised breed since 2016 www.thekennelclub.org.uk/search/breeds-a-to-z/breeds/terrier/jack-russell-terrier/

JonHammIsMyJamm · 27/10/2020 17:01

Oh OP, what a rollercoaster this thread is!

So is the official line that you are fostering Poppy for the rescue then?

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 27/10/2020 18:28

Ha i had a feeling from the first post that she would end up with you.

plinkplinkfizzer · 27/10/2020 18:52

You can't have K C papers for a jack.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 27/10/2020 19:25

You can't have K C papers for a jack.
You can. The KC keeps recognising the mostly-white terrier that's generally called the JRT - first off as the fox terrier, then as the Parson Russell Terrier and now as the Jack Russell Terrier. Nonetheless, most JRTs are not KC registered.

Nobody who actually works terriers will look for KC papers. There is a JRT club in the UK which has nothing to do with the Kennel Club, wants nothing to do with the Kennel Club, and reckons that the KC is the ruin of many working breeds.

And right they are!
Once the KC gets hold of a quality working breed, a fine and healthy working dog they are no more...

As with all the Kennel Club ‘working’ Hmm breeds, what they perceive as a Jack Russell terrier is a cute little thing but it is in no way, shape or form what most people think of when they think of the Jack Russell terrier and give it a few generations it won’t just differ in looks, it’ll be nothing like a Jack in temperament either and a useless worker.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 27/10/2020 21:02

MrsJungelow, the retrievers at Crufts this year made me wince.

I can 100% see the purpose of assessing conformation, gait and coat (is the dog sound? Does it move well? Does its coat do the job it needs to do?) but there is so much more to a working dog.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 27/10/2020 21:16

The Crufts labs are massive now Sad.

I have a KC reg working lab and he is beautiful. Lean, well muscled, fit and with excellent parental health scores. The show types are ruined though Sad
