Talk me out out of impulse puppy purchase!

We decided we wanted to get a dog a few months ago. Did our research, decided on a lab and a local training club and agreed to wait until after Christmas before looking for a puppy. Have two cats and one ds who is 7.

I was just supposed to be having a look at puppy prices in our area.

There is an 11 week old Jack Russel girl, gorgeous but the saddest looking thing. In a metal cage without even a blanket.

Being advertised as having all her KC papers, vaccine card etc. but is being sold as she is ‘an unwanted birthday gift’ Angry

Talk me down.

I know there are many sensible reasons why it isn’t a great idea to leap in to my car and go get her. But if it’s possible to fall in love with a photo I think I just have. I know they are sharks at this age but though inexperienced I few I can handle it (joined an excellent group on Facebook recommended on here).

(Possibly relevant information - have just had a miscarriage, confirmed as complete three days ago. Hormones/emotions are all over the place at the moment.)

That’s really sweet, OP! Re the cats, we have 3 and 10 week old border collie puppy is learning that they are the boss. Big cat snarls and scratches. Medium cat boxes her ears. Little cat is a bit shyer but getting more confident. My dad has a Pattendale x Norfolk terrier and also has 3 cats and it’s been fine - dog was licked into shape by the oldest cat and stood the introduction of kittens a few years later with fortitude. There are success stories! Just remember that the cats are boss and tell the puppy off for chasing/bothering even if she gets scratched.

TheDogsMother · 22/10/2020 09:14

I had a JR and three cats. As long as the cats were there first and you have strict boundaries for the dog they will be fine. They all used to lie lined up together in front of the log burner Smile. I think somehow dogs know when they've been given a second chance.

@AtomicTit so happy for you! And even more happy for Poppy.

Worriesandwobbles · 22/10/2020 16:26

Ah I just read through is whole thread hoping you had caved and gone and got her ! I said no to a dog for 14 years, have never been a dog person (have always had cats) but wegot a puppy this summer and I am literally besotted with him. Best decision ever. Its not been easy (and I won't be getting another) but he is the most loving thing ever. We saw the advert and got him the next day so no time to prepare either. Even if you decide not to keep her yourself, you will have given her some much needed love, attention and comfort compared to where she was.

AtomicTit · 22/10/2020 17:51

Still saying I’m not allowed to post pictures yet? I have so many to show! Grin

Managed to get in to the vets for just after 2pm, and thankfully Poppy is ‘fit as a fiddle’ and apparently one of the calmest Jack Russel puppies he has seen.

No doubt about it at all now, DH had a chat earlier. Poppy has won everyone’s heart and is officially part of the family!

I 'impulse rescued' a JRT years back; all the things you're not supposed to do, I did. He turned out to be a little star.

Brilliant dog. Did everything I asked of him (sometimes in his own, inimitable Way of the Terrier) and never actually failed at anything.

Had him sixteen years, lost him more than a decade ago and still miss him to this day. The only reason I've not had another is because I'd always be looking for my old boy in the new dog, which wouldn't be fair on either of us.

Be fair and consistent with training, lots of play, lots of entertainment (or they tend to find their own!) and you'll do fine.

@NoSquirrels

You wanted a Lab from a reputable breeder.

You’re about to end up with a JRT from some shitbags.

Don’t, please.

A JRT is nothing like a Labrador. At all.

I am so excited for you OP

Dogs are the best

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/10/2020 09:00

I was one of those saying, Don't.
But she sounds adorable. I suspect in your shoes I would have caved in and got her Blush
Enjoy her. We had a terrier with a cat for 15 years. She grew up with the cat already in charge and there was never an issue.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 23/10/2020 09:38

I’m just placemarking for pictures 😁

Bouncycastle12 · 23/10/2020 09:43

16purplecolour16 · 23/10/2020 14:22

@AtomicTit - we need to lobby MN for special dispensation to post pics!

Sparrow91 · 23/10/2020 14:31

So glad you followed your heart! And DH agreed 😉

Also waiting in line for the puppy spam 😍

Juanbablo · 23/10/2020 15:43

I'm so pleased you went for it! Our JRT is almost 1 and the best little pup ever. So friendly and so much personality. He's been so easy to be honest.

Orkneys · 23/10/2020 16:39

Photos please! Whys it taking so long

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/10/2020 16:52

I think it is fair to say that Poppy has adopted you!

Looking forward to puppy pictures.

Bells3032 · 23/10/2020 17:03

Sounds like this has worked out but i'd still keep an eye on her and don't make this a habit.

Also place marking for puppy pics
