What does your dog eat?

Our adopted dog is coming to live with us in just under 3 weeks. I've prepared everything except his food, I'm just so lost. Every time I go to Pets At Home I think 'Ok I will get his food now' and then just get a bit overwhelmed.

My cat is on Royal Canin neutered senior food and is really bright and well on it. So my natural instinct is to buy the dog the same brand, but is it actually any good?

I am prepared to pay for good quality dog food, but I don't have megabucks, so cant be cooking him t bones fresh every day Wink

Can you tell me what your dog eats (aside from your underwear) and if you rate it?

Many thanks!

Royal Canin honestly isn't brilliant - meat should be the top ingredient, not fillers or grains.

We feed Lily's Kitchen, although the recipe is changing due it being taken over by Nestle so we probably won't be using them for much longer!

www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk is a great website - you can search by budget too which is really helpful!

Scweltish · 19/10/2020 16:34

Royal Canin is absolute shite. I can’t believe the charge that price for it. I’d also recommend going on the ‘all about dog food’ site as they’re independent reviewers. I’m on a massive budget so I feed my dogs autarky. It’s the best quality food I’ve come across that’s still priced really low

TheVanguardSix · 19/10/2020 16:36

AATU dry kibble (chicken)
Butcher’s wet trays

Sitdowncupoftea · 19/10/2020 16:40

My dogs bar one are on carnilove.

mintyfreshh · 19/10/2020 16:41

Thank you so much, looking all these up

Mine eats Chappie tins. Terrible food but for some reason it’s the only one she can tolerate.
She also gets JWB as that’s the only kibble she likes.

CooperLooper · 19/10/2020 16:43

Skinners - my vet also feeds their dog this!

suziedoozy · 19/10/2020 16:49

Mine eat Feelwells - they are a lovely British company based in Yorkshire I think. One often has to have a special diet (allergic to everything) and they couldn’t be more helpful.

In the past we used Lily’s Kitchen but I wouldn’t touch them now they are owned by Nestle.

One absolutely adore the Feelwell’s meat snacks - goat / kangaroo etc

I also like their ethical stance and their products are only British or EU made.

I could buy cheaper but they are OK price wise whilst ticking lots of other boxes.

(And no I don’t have any affiliation with them!)

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/10/2020 16:49

My 3 are fed a raw diet. I buy it ready made.

Years ago they were on Skinners kibble. Duck or salmon one.

suziedoozy · 19/10/2020 16:49

Didn’t notice autocorrect changed ‘mine’ to one a couple of times.... very strange!

Floralnomad · 19/10/2020 16:52

I have a very fussy terrier and we’ve finally settled wet and dry mix which is Millie’s wolfheart ranger kibble and Applaws tins / pouches - mainly the chicken in broth small tins as he loves them .

AriettyHomily · 19/10/2020 16:52

Royal Canin is shit and overpriced imo.

DDog is diabetic, he is on Chappie wet as it is the best low fat fish based food. I wouldn't feed my dog it in normal circumstances but if you look at the ingredients it's actually better than than Royal Canin / Hills w/d and significantly cheaper.

ladybee28 · 19/10/2020 16:54

My fella's on Happy Dog dry food with a bit of chicken torn up in tiny pieces and mixed in... he's a grandad and choosy in his old age.

EthelTheGoose · 19/10/2020 17:00

We feed our pup raw, we buy minced chicken carcasses from the butcher which is £1 per kg, and we get 2 days out of a kg. We mix in a bit of dry kibble just to ensure he's getting some of the other nutrients, and will add in any leftover veg/pasta/rice/meat scraps. This is what our butcher feeds his dogs too.

If the butcher is out of stock, we will use beef mince as a temporary alternative.

mintyfreshh · 19/10/2020 17:08

AATU looks great, think we will try that first.

GirlCrush · 19/10/2020 17:18

we use wainwrights from pets at home

i fear its shite too but i was also so confused and overwhelmed op

our vet actually recommended royal canin

GirlCrush · 19/10/2020 17:26

actually just looked on the recommended website and wainwrights comes out ok!

so do the treats we use

DaisyFamily · 19/10/2020 17:28

We use Arden Grange.

lynsey91 · 19/10/2020 17:29

Our dogs are fed raw. We buy packs of minced meats - tripe, beef, chicken, lamb, beef from a local supplier. There are quite a few companies that will deliver for a reasonable price.

We think it is much better for them and as a bonus it works out cheaper than other food and their poos are small and nowhere near as smelly (2 large dogs)

mintyfreshh · 19/10/2020 17:32

I don't have the storage for completely raw diet so think a good quality food like AATU would be a good compromise.

niceupthedance · 19/10/2020 17:41

Beco- ddog has a very sensitive stomach and this is the only one that doesn't irritate and he looks very glossy.

He also eats poos, discarded nappies, cardboard and all manner of other disgusting things.

ThatLibraryMiss · 19/10/2020 18:23

Mine's raw fed on Paleo Ridge complete. He gets about 3% of his ideal body weight per day, which is a bit more than recommended but he's small and active and keeps slender and fit on that. He sometimes gets a raw chicken wing or lamb rib, but he has a bad habit of burying them in the garden then digging them up a few hours later and dragging them plus soil into the house. He loves his food and the vet says he's very healthy.

I'll probably be trying Durham Animal Feeds when we get through the current batch of PR, because the smaller packs will suit us better and because the local pet shop sells it.

Funf · 19/10/2020 18:58

Ours has Burns pouches and dry mixed, thrives on it, it was recommended by the Vet ( Who doesn't sell it) and the breeder.
We looked at changing but its a mine field as she does well on it but I have to order online as local shops dont stock it.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 19/10/2020 19:28

Millie's tracker or highland mix here, both low fat, mixed with Wainwright's light adult food
