What does your dog eat?

Our adopted dog is coming to live with us in just under 3 weeks. I've prepared everything except his food, I'm just so lost. Every time I go to Pets At Home I think 'Ok I will get his food now' and then just get a bit overwhelmed.

My cat is on Royal Canin neutered senior food and is really bright and well on it. So my natural instinct is to buy the dog the same brand, but is it actually any good?

I am prepared to pay for good quality dog food, but I don't have megabucks, so cant be cooking him t bones fresh every day Wink

Can you tell me what your dog eats (aside from your underwear) and if you rate it?

Many thanks!

Mine is fed a raw complete by Naturaw.

Small poops, no farts, no smelly breath.

longwayoff · 19/10/2020 19:49

Butcher's Tripe grain free canned food. Occasional treats of frozen meatball in a Kong toy (hours to get it out) or raw carrot. Allergic to practically everything else.

Ylfa · 19/10/2020 20:16

AATU at the moment (salmon and herring, duck, chicken) but thinking about transitioning to a raw diet.

Ylfa · 19/10/2020 20:21

Please tell us more about your new dog 😍🐾

hollyhope · 19/10/2020 20:27

Should you take into account what your new dog's diet currently consists of?
He'll have the upheaval of moving to a new home, and it might be better not to change his food, if it suits him just fine.

Bergerdog · 19/10/2020 20:28

Be careful with grain free diets- they have been linked to dietary based cardiomyopathy in some dogs in multiple studies by the FDA. Particularly breeds that have not had history of heart disease before and the conditions have improved once a normal diet is resumed.

Personally I try and go for a nice quality dry food and add in some extras as an when for variety. Egg, meat, veg, rice etc.

Mine have all done well on Purina pro plan as it’s a heart disease approved diet and I have giant breeds but there are so many good foods out there to choose from!

Sunnydaysstillhere · 19/10/2020 20:30

Our ddog has a balanced diet of wallpaper and chairs...

LoeliaPonsonby · 19/10/2020 20:31

Are these boards being used by Royal Canin for market research on the sly, @MumsnetHQ?

This is the second post recently (last one was about feeding cats) which have set off my spider senses - posters with no history, sneakily mentioning Royal Canin...

Anything and everything!

fruitpastille · 19/10/2020 21:42

We stayed on the same as the rescue, which luckily happened to be Aldi dry food. Dog v healthy on it.

CMOTDibbler · 19/10/2020 21:45

One of mine is very fussy and also has a sensitive tummy. At the moment we have a routine of a Burns pouch for his breakfast, while the other has a tin of Butchers, then for dinner they have some kibble (Hunger of the Wolf at the moment as Mr Snowflake is rejecting everything, but Vitalin sensitive or Burns normally). At dinner snowflake has a tray of Naturo with it and the other has Butchers again, or they have a chub roll (disgusting, but they love it) between them.

Raw diet for our Pup!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/10/2020 22:55

We feed DAF raw and also have JWB kibble in the house for puzzle toys & training.
He's a 1yr collie type, eats about 1 frozen pack of DAF a day so I can fit about a week/10 days supply in the freezer if I don't buy the children ice cream
It's good quality, he's very healthy & good poos. And it's not grim to handle either, apart from the tripe & oily fish...

My border collie is an extremely fussy eater. He is fed a mixture of things, just to make sure he eats. This week his diet is raw, with scrambled egg and felix cat food. No altogether though!😅

Strugglingtodomybest · 20/10/2020 06:50

My two have James Wellbeloved.

Girlintheframe · 20/10/2020 07:20

Ours has been on Millies Wolfheart Riverside mix for about 18 months now. He came to us on James Wellbeloved but he used to stink and his poos were a quite soft.
Since moving him he no longer smells and his poos are firm and easier to pick up.
Currently moving him onto Millie Utility mix as he is very active and this is more appropriate.

I hadn’t noticed that Lily’s Kitchen had been taken over

I had noticed that the last bag of puppy kibble I bought smelt slightly different

We have a couple of emergency tins of the chicken/rice Royal Canin (the sort vets sell) but don’t feed it regularly - just when there’s an upset tummy.

Time to research what DDog will be getting next - she’s transitioning away from puppy food and may as well change brands too

Mindymomo · 20/10/2020 08:25

I would keep to the same food for a while and change over if you need to. I feed my boy Freshpet or Forthglade, mixed with Skinners or Wainwrights dry food.

AlwaysLatte · 20/10/2020 08:33

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Harrington's or Naturo wet food in the morning and Harrington's complete dry food in the evening, all grain free.

mintyfreshh · 20/10/2020 09:58

Oh dearie me @LoeliaPonsonby it's time to take the tin foil hat off. I have posted on here for years and very recently in this exact forum about the dog I am adopting. I mentioned RC because it's a brand I am familiar with, and if you look downthread you will see that I have decided on a completely different brand for my dog.

To those saying to feed what he has now, I can't. He eats Portuguese dog food. He ate whatever was cheap at the dog rescue shelter he was in, and his foster carer now feeds him completely raw diet, which I cannot do here as I don't have the fridge/freezer space. So a good quality, high meat, grain free food is what I am after, and I like the look of AATU.

Ylfa · 20/10/2020 10:37

I’m in the same boat minty, except Romania not Portugal - AATU is going down well here. I do have a spare freezer from lockdown (all my adult children and one grandchild moved in for three months 😅) so raw feeding is an option but it’s often of dubious provenance and I’m still only in the thinking about it stages. Kibble is so portable and invaluable to keep in my pocket for readily reinforcing desirable behaviour.

Stellaris22 · 20/10/2020 12:56

Butchers tins, specifically the ones for joints and coat. Mixed with Harringtons dry food, she loves the Butchers tins and usually on offer at Pets at Home which is useful.

GrouchyKiwi · 20/10/2020 13:02

We use Arden Grange dry food. We used to give her half dry half Butcher's tins but her breath has been atrocious lately (and she isn't interested in bones, the weirdo) so I'm trying just kibble for a bit.

MsMarvellous · 20/10/2020 16:53

I feed my dog raw from a local supplier. He's healthy and happy.
