Which breeds would you not have again

Following on from the which pet wouldn’t you have again...

Which breed wouldn’t you have again and why?

I’ll start with GSD. I love them, I’ve had them all my life and I am on GSD 10 of various rescues and bought from reputable breeder dogs. After my last I decided not to get another due to the fact it’s very difficult to find a non neurotic/nervous/overly sensitive one despite me viewing multiple breeders at the time.

I really feel like backyard breeders have ruined the majority of them and I work with dogs and find GSD a bit of a nightmare to deal with Blush

When I got my current dog of a different breed lots and lots of the owners have moved on from GSD due to the same reason. I think they will always by my favourite but they are hard to live with at times Grin

So are there any other breeds that people have had that they think never again?

Labrador. Garbage munching, concrete headed, aggressive swines. My ex DP had one and as lovely and dopey as he was, he drove me crazy with his constant food obsession and attacking other dogs. Also recieved a broken toe from a well-timed headbutt. But as other posters have said, the majority of that is down to the owner not the dog.

MrsPnut · 17/10/2020 19:58

@moosemama

Dad’s JRT was walked miles every day along beaches, through forests and fields. They would often spend half the day walking together, plus Dad often walked other people’s dogs for them, so she’d go out with them as well. I used to joke that her legs were so short because he’d walked them off! Grin
There is an elderly lady that lives in the village that has a small rough coated terrier and we say it’s a lurcher but it’s legs have worn away with all the walks. She’s out 4 times a day, every day.
MrsPnut · 17/10/2020 20:24

I’d never have a working cocker again, ours was so difficult to live with due to cocker rage but I was so fit from all the walking.
We currently have two pugs, from the same breeder, but they don’t have breathing issues and run daily with their doggy friends.
We don’t allow treats and keep their weight down to keep them healthy but they don’t need huge amount of exercise. 30m x 2 daily is enough.

Interesting thread

SBTLove · 17/10/2020 20:51

@Letsleepingdogslie8
Our boy was a rescue at 6/7mths, had been poorly treated, he was such an affectionate ppl lover and loved other dogs too, deferred to his smaller sisters 😉 Had to let him go at just 7 as he was crippled due to the abuse he’d suffered as a pup, but we had nearly 7 yrs of love and his huge personality is a loss to our house, I miss him every day 💔

popsydoodle4444 · 17/10/2020 20:53

Spaniel;they are absolutely batshit crazy.

MarinPrime · 17/10/2020 21:17

Labrador.
His 3 yr puppyhood was exhausting, he's constantly moulting and the hairs get everywhere. He's 10 now and still bounces around like he's on springs.
His favourite pastime is to find something disgusting to eat on a walk then stink the house out with his evil farts for the next 24 hours.
I love him to bits and he makes me laugh every day but I'd never get another lab.
In contrast my other dog was a rescue, he was a year old when I got him and he was so easy to rain and has turned into the perfect dog.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/10/2020 22:27

This is an interesting thread, sorry for my ignorance but is GSD a German Shepard?

We have a terrier cross and he's a great little dog but I feel like dogs are a bit like children, you can never 100% be sure what you're going to get!!!

WildWaterSwimmer · 17/10/2020 22:38

Basset Hound. I'd never, ever get a Basset Hound again! It was the most stubborn, self-serving, narcissistic creature. It made no attempt to ever please us or do anything we wanted. Any sort of training was nigh on impossible. I had 16 years of stress living with a Basset Hound, I couldn't go through that again.

Offredismysister · 17/10/2020 22:39

I think it’s down to the individual dog.
I had a shar pei with no health problems until 9 years of age. Had to PTS as back legs went. No other health issues. Lovely dog.
My current springer is slightly skittish, but so well trained, I can’t imagine having another breed now.
My Dobermann is a nightmare, needy, whiny & boisterous. Never again.
Although she is so soft & loyal, but very hard to train & she has a sensitive stomach.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 17/10/2020 23:09

Boxer. It’s many years since I had one and he was an amazing, loving and loyal dog but I could not get to the bottom of his energy. I had an outdoor job and he came to work with me and ran all day. He still paced the flat in the evening looking for more exercise.
I have terriers now and wouldn’t have any other breed. I think I am just a terrier person as we get on so well, I get them and they work hard for me.

PinkFlamingo888 · 18/10/2020 00:36

We have a gsd x border collie and he’s the perfect dog. So clever and well behaved. Good with other dogs and people. Had never destroyed a thing and happy to be left alone. If we get another dog I’d want the exact same again. But I think we just got really really lucky with him and feel like we should choose something different as we’re unlikely to get an exact replica!

Bergerdog · 18/10/2020 07:48

@PinkFlamingo888 we have had one of those in the past too. She was a fantastic dog, the most intelligent we have ever had and so obedient but she did have a very collie brain and spent a lot of time herding, obsessing, stalking and repeatedly doing the same thing over and over. I wouldn’t have one of those again just because I can’t commit to the collie side of things but I did think she was fabulous Grin

GSD is short for German shepherd.

I did once live with a Dobe (not mine) who was nervy, whiny and crapped in the kitchen every single night (right by the door, obviously waiting to be let out so poor management was probably the issue). Not a nasty dog at all and I suspect a lot of it was lack of appropriate stimulation, but it put me off the breed.

Plus the breed is riddled with heart problems, which is another no.

SilverOtter · 18/10/2020 09:29

I've always thought working cockers are cute and quite fancied getting one. I'd never heard of 'cocker rage' until this thread....guess I'll stick with Vizslas😂

dontdisturbmenow · 18/10/2020 17:44

The only breed, I can think of at this time, that I would never have again is a Golden Retriever
My mum would agree with you. She had one after our labrador died and she found it hard. He was the most gentle soul but was quite dumb. Our labrador was incredibly smart so found the retriever frustrating at time, but still much loved.

I also have to agree about JRT. Never thought much of them but since getting my small puppy, I have to they are the breed most likely to snap totally unprovoked. My puppy now automatically stays away from them despite going towards any dogs regardless of size.

Of course there are lovely ones too.

ElspethFlashman · 18/10/2020 19:11

The big plus with JRTs is that they have very few health problems. They're no trouble in that regard.

But by God you do not know what JRT you are going to get. Its a lottery.

MrsJunglelow · 18/10/2020 19:18

I think a JRT is so, so different in temperament though.
You can’t get more ‘terrier’ than a Jack imo.

And terriers are nothing like gundogs, poodles and cockers are both gundogs, though admittedly poodles haven’t bred for working in many years.

MrsJunglelow · 18/10/2020 19:20

Oh dear 😖
I’ve gotten confused and thought I was responding to the cocker spaniel thread.
Ignore me!

vanillandhoney · 18/10/2020 19:21

Poodles are still used as working dogs. A quick google shows you that.

I didn’t mean to write on this thread, I got confused thinking the previous comment was on the cocker spaniel thread as the OP said her DH wanted a JRT.
My bad Blush

Anyway, where?!?!
I have literally never heard of anyone working a poodle.

2me2u2u2me · 18/10/2020 19:48
@SprogletsMum if it helps to know, my cav doesn’t have this problem at all! So it may be down to the individual dog?
I agree our, 13 1/2 year old Cavalier never did this either, train him to cock his leg Grin

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/10/2020 20:07

My dog is half jrt and half yorkie, he's very gentle and laid back boy but occasionally suffers with 'little dog syndrome' so makes a bit of noise in front of bigger breeds.

I love terriers and generally a lot of the less favourable behaviours can be dealt with by careful training and good early socialisation imo.

Interesting that labs and golden retrievers have been named on here as I've only ever met lovely ones.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 18/10/2020 20:30

Not very often though... I know dogs of about a dozen different breeds that are working gundogs, and not a single poodle amongst them. Very infrequently you'll see an article in the shooting press that features a poodle (or a cockerpoo) or see a pic on FB of a working poodle, but they are very unusual. They're not run in gundog tests or trials in the UK - not that I know of, anyway.

I do know someone who used to work a Staffie, though...

SBTLove · 18/10/2020 20:52

There are quite a few staffie police dogs now, have a look on Twitter for PD Cooper, Police Dog Stella the Staffie, both rescues too.
