Dog walker calling me out of work.

So dog is 2.5 years old.
She's always been a bit hit and miss with recall at the end of a walk, so her recall is 100% during the walk but when it's home time she has in the past given me the run around which meant a few of us have spent an hour trying to catch her on numerous occasions.
She doesn't go far, only 10 metres away, but when you get close she'll spring back, basically playing a game with us.
She point blank refuses to take treats from us when out, even steak, bacon, liver, she will not even take it from our hands or if we chuck it down she'll ignore it.
At home she wolfs down anything and is a greedy madam.
In the end she spent the best part of a year with a long line trailing behind her which we could step on if she was playing up.
Anyway back to the point!
For the past 9 months she's been absolutely spot on with coming back at the end of her walk for me and my husband. We call her, say "down" and she lies down for her lead to be put on.
So that's 2 x walks a day for 9 months she's been an angel.
However she has started messing around for the dog walker.
Twice she has called me at work saying I need to get my dog back as she's running laps round her refusing to have her lead on.
Each time I've left work, called the dog, asked her to lie down and clipped her lead on with no issues.
I'm getting a bit fed up of being called out of work and my manager is getting pissed off.
She is a high breed working type dog so cannot be kept on lead for a walk.
Any ideas?

Just to clarify we walk her for 20 mins twice a day, first thing and last thing and dog walker takes her for an hour at lunch time. She's on her own 10-2 each day, so 4 hours with a 1 hour walk, plus travelling in the dog van so 1.5 hours out of the house every lunch time, so only actually on her own 2.5 hours a day, which she sleeps (we've got a doggy cam!)

Yes, she can be kept in the lead when she's with the dog walker, and obviously she needs to be. You will simply have to take her for an off-lead walk when you get home.

HullabalooToo · 03/10/2020 22:38

Doggy daycare or let out in garden by ‘walker’ and then walk her longer yourself?

SourMilkGhyll · 03/10/2020 22:39

Get a new dog walker!

slipperywhensparticus · 03/10/2020 22:40

She needs to not let her off the lead

tockityboo · 03/10/2020 22:40

Well yes, physically she can be kept on the lead, but when I've tried to walk the fields with her on a lead in the past she's been awful screaming to get off lead and run around. She circles, barks, screeches, trips you up, pulls like a train.
Her lead walking on paths is fine.
And I would like her let off to run her energy off.
Dog walker not keen on a trailing long line in case dog gets caught up and stuck on trees or brambles and walker can't find her.

Obviously answer is she stays on a long line whilst with the walker. She doesn’t want to have to deal with trying to catch a dog at the end of a walk.

My dog does stays on a line when out with my walker as he tends to chase deer and it’s not fair on the dog walker to have to wait around for him to return. He goes off lead when I walk him.

ohisntthisallfun · 03/10/2020 22:40

Your poor dog walker. That sounds quite stressful for them. It sounds like your dog is playing up - doesn't help you though...

PuppyMonkey · 03/10/2020 22:41

I don't quite get the "high breed, can't be on a lead" concept. Poor dog walker. Confused

ArcherDog · 03/10/2020 22:42

And I would like her let off to run her energy off. Well unfortunately shes not well behaved enough for that so you’ll have to change your expectations.

tockityboo · 03/10/2020 22:42

I feel awful for the dog walker.
But also annoyed as she doesn't want to use a trailing long line.
I have a waterproof, bright pink, 15 metre trailing long line which would make her life much easier if dog did decide to play up.

Get a retractable leash for the dog walker to use, that way the dog will have a bit a room to run around, and then do a longer walk when you get home.

tockityboo · 03/10/2020 22:43

Tried retractable long line. She sprints as fast as she can and almost gets whiplash when she gets to the end of the line.

I have border collies, their recall is bad so they are walked on leads, it's fine. I occasionally (when I have time to wait for recall) let them off lead but I would never encourage a dog walker to have them off lead. If they're taken for a reasonable length walk its not a huge deal to have them on lead.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/10/2020 22:44

Your dog needs to be properly trained.

RunningFromInsanity · 03/10/2020 22:44

Can she run around off lead for 3/4 of the walk, and then get the dog walker to call the dogs over, and put your dog on the lead for the remaining part. Rather than wait until your dog knows the walk is ending.

TokyoSushi · 03/10/2020 22:44

Of course she can be on a lead. She's clearly not suitable for being off the lead with other people, so needs to learn to be able to dodo, and not hot out with a dog walker etc until she can.

Completely understand that this is easier said than done.

cupboardmonster · 03/10/2020 22:44

Can't you leave her four hours? I say this someone with working gundogs. Four hours isn't an unreasonable time to leave a dog providing they don't have separation anxiety. Your dog walker isn't helping, a day care might be better.

HullabalooToo · 03/10/2020 22:46

Get her trained for the leash

TokyoSushi · 03/10/2020 22:46

Wow there's some typos there, sorry! Basically she needs to learn to walk on a lead, and not go with the dog walker until she can!

Aquamarine1029 · 03/10/2020 22:49

Your biggest issue is the lack of proper training. That needs to be sorted asap.

tockityboo · 03/10/2020 22:50

Yeah she can be left for 4 hours I just feel guilty. And our old dog walker used to put her back on a longline 3/4 of the way through the walk which worked perfectly. But we moved house and he doesn't cover our new area.
New dog walker just point blank refuses to use one. I think dog has given her a false sense of security, her recall has been fine for the past few months, but twice in 2 weeks she's messed around at the end. I think dog walker thought it might be a one off so took her out again with no long line.

OP posts:
winetime89 · 03/10/2020 22:51

I'd get a new dog walker, she doesn't seem to be willing to try anything

tockityboo · 03/10/2020 22:52

But I think I need to say to her, either put her on a short lead the whole time, put a trailing long line on her, or if you're not comfortable with this then don't take her at all and I'll put her in daycare.
I just can't be called out of work once a week going forwards to call the dog back.

OP posts:
SillyCow6 · 03/10/2020 22:56

I dont see how her getting to the end of the retractable lead is any different to you standing on the end of the long line?
