Does your dog have a coat?

Our lovely Sproodle (1) has never had a coat, but I feel he's missing out and I'd like one for this winter, to keep him warm and dry and potentially a little bit cleaner! Does anybody have a coat that they would recommend? Would you even recommend that they have one?

Just to clarify, I'm not particularly keen on one of those things that looks like your dog is wearing a fleece/knitted onesie, nor am I looking for a 'fashion' coat with fur-lined hood, name in diamante etc! I'm definitely looking for a very doggy type of coat!

I have several

Plus an Ancol coat.

For after a wet walk I use a ruffandtumble towel coat to dry him and stop him shaking water and mud everywhere. Keeps him nice and warm.

Ours hasn't needed one so far. We have a very hairy lab x GSD whose coat is massively thick. He can be soaked at the top, but dry down at his skin. After a wet, muddy walk he doesn't come in until he's been towelled down.

PollyRoulson · 02/10/2020 13:12

I have tried coats but just end up with a wet muddy dog and also a wet muddy dog. My guys dont seem to be able to manage clothing. They also get really hot even when we were in snow in the mountains.

We have tried many styles and types.

What we do now is let them get muddy wet and then put on a drying coat which absorbs all the mud and wet . We use equafleece and Spring things coats for this.

PollyRoulson · 02/10/2020 13:13

also a wet muddy dog and a wet muddy coat!

pigsDOfly · 02/10/2020 13:16

Like you I used to feel that in some weather, snow or rain, a coat would make sure my dog didn't get wet or shivery.

However, she would never wear a coat. If I put one on her we'd get outside and she'd refused to move until I took it off.

Now she's older, 9 years, she seems quite happy to wear a very light waterproof coat in very cold windy weather or rain, if we go out in the rain, which we rarely do.

I think, most healthy young, active dogs don't need coats unless weather conditions are extreme.

If their coat - the furry one - is in good condition and they're running around they should keep warm; obviously there are certain breeds, greyhounds and whippets, for example that need to wear coats but most dog will manage very nicely without.

I take it a Sproodle is a cross between a springer spaniel and poodle, in which case he probably won't need an extra coat on top of what I imagine is a fairly thick coat.

Animals in the wild don't wear coats on top of their coats.

@ArcherDog is gorgeous 🥰
My staffy girl has jumpers for cold days and coats for wet days, she is not a fan of inclement weather 😃

BiteyShark · 02/10/2020 13:18

Mine refuses to move in a coat. I can't entice him with anything so no he doesn't have one Grin

TokyoSushi · 02/10/2020 13:22

Ah, maybe I just need something like the towel coat then for when he comes back. Yes he's a cross between a Springer & a Labradoodle, so he's got a lovely thick wooly coat, but oh the filth!

**Off to google towel coats!

Here he is!

He looks like a big fluffy towel anyway 😂😂

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 02/10/2020 15:12

Equafleece are best, I think, but you don't want a fleece (they are waterproof), you say. They have various types - you can a formal coat-type one but easier with an active dog is the tankie (better for stopping the mud getting to their underside too). I don't think they look as though they are wearing human clothing but I don't care for the ones with long sleeves (which do look human to me)

Floralnomad · 02/10/2020 16:10

Our patterdale x has a variety of Equafleece jumpers and suits , he’s clipped short and they keep him cleaner in the winter when he’s running around in mud / wet . I like Equafleece because they don’t restrict movement and wash and dry really nicely , some of ours are years old and look as good as new .

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/10/2020 16:46

Ours have Ruff and Tumble drying coats and I'm looking to get something waterproof for the middle dog when out on wet and cold training days and waiting around for her go. Other than that, she has no need for a coat, she's weather-proof and keeps warm when moving.

copperoliver · 02/10/2020 17:02

Yes. Equafleece and Hugo and Hudson have a sale on some of their coats too. Mutts and hounds are nice or Barbour. Depending on what look you want. X

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2020 17:04

I use equafleece and ruff and tumble to dry.

MidnightFlit · 02/10/2020 17:05

Another vote for Ruff & Tumble drying coats - our older dog has one for after winter walks and his hydrotherapy. They're really easy to get on, and do the job well.

Plus it makes him look like a little hot water bottle.

Spaniels and poodles are both active breeds, designed to shake off bad weather and water without really noticing. To be honest, your sproodle doesn't need one for walking - but you might need one to stick on him post-walk to stop your car/house getting covered in mud!

CMOTDibbler · 02/10/2020 18:04

My dogs have more coats than I do! Ddog1 is your typical skinny lurcher and really feels the cold - currently he is wearing a fleece jumper with dinosaur spikes, but has fleece pyjamas, fleece coats, quilted all in one, waterproof all in one, raincoat, halloween coat (glow in the dark Star Wars), festive coat, fancy dress Santa Paws coat for christmas charity events and a few more.
Ddog2 is a heavier set lurcher and only has 4 coats as he doesn't need one inside, so just needs rain protection (else he won't move), something for really cold weather, and pyjamas for camping

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2020 18:06

@CMOTDibbler not for mine but I have a friend with a retired racing greyhound who gets chilly at night. Where do you get PJs from?

nevernotstruggling · 02/10/2020 18:10

Our cocker has an equafleece. They are excellent and until you get one you won't understand. He totally looks like he's wearing a onesie but I take him in the sea or the river and millions of puddles and mud and I take indoors a dog with wet paws and face only.

I also recommend putting a bath mat in the car crate which absorbs a lot before we get home!

CMOTDibbler · 02/10/2020 18:59

@Wolfiefan - I think yours are hairy enough not to need coats!

Pyjamas and Dinosaur pyjamas

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2020 19:03

Haha @CMOTDibbler you’re right. But a poor shivery retired greyhound. Poor baby needs pampering!!
Anyway the puppy would eat PJs. Grin

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/10/2020 19:17

Bitey mine is the same 🙄🤣 I bought him a couple of lovely coats, he stands stock still looking miserable and refuses to move!! Luckily he has fairly thick fur so manages without.

RandomMess · 02/10/2020 19:22

We too have very many coats for super skinny ddog that needs pjs in the house else she shivers.

Equafleece is the best tbh.

OnlyToWin · 02/10/2020 19:24

We have a couple of “muddy paws” coats, which he wears in autumn and winter, particularly after he has been groomed. They also keep his tummy dry and clean. He does not like putting them on but then walks quite happily in them. They are very much a dog coat not a fashion coat.

OnlyToWin · 02/10/2020 19:25

Brand is Ancoll
