Does your dog have a coat?

Our lovely Sproodle (1) has never had a coat, but I feel he's missing out and I'd like one for this winter, to keep him warm and dry and potentially a little bit cleaner! Does anybody have a coat that they would recommend? Would you even recommend that they have one?

Just to clarify, I'm not particularly keen on one of those things that looks like your dog is wearing a fleece/knitted onesie, nor am I looking for a 'fashion' coat with fur-lined hood, name in diamante etc! I'm definitely looking for a very doggy type of coat!

Our Greyhound cross has very short fur and hardly any on his chest and he loves his fleecy bedtime coat. He also has a waterproof for walks.
Very spoilt dog.

We have Ruff for when its wet; it keeeps her dryish and saves a lot of drying.

OnlyToWin · 02/10/2020 19:36

Can I ask a silly question?
Are the Ruff and Tumble coats to be worn on the walk or just like a dressing gown when they get home? Thanks

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/10/2020 20:04

Only, they're a sort of canine bathrobe. Not really designed to be used outside. They'll keep the rain off if you're not out in a downpour for half an hour, and I've used one in the absence of anything else to keep a dog warm in a biting drizzle-laden wind, but they're not ideal as they get covered in mud very easily and are not waterproof.

We keep our dogs Ruff and tumble in the car for when he gets wet on walks , in the house if he needs to be dried he goes in his dry bag which he absolutely loves .

OnlyToWin · 02/10/2020 20:33

Thank you - are they worth the price?

Notthecarwashagain · 02/10/2020 20:38

Eeesh. She didn't, until this thread.
She now has an equafleece in dark purple on the way!

My ruff and tumble towel coat saves my floors, walls, sofa and sanity! I leave it by the door and after a wet walk put it on him before releasing him into the house. Then whilst I’m getting undressed/shoes off etc I know he’s not turning the lounge into a mud bath!

Pricey but worth it.

OnlyToWin · 02/10/2020 20:50

@RunningFromInsanity thank you. Sounds good - think I have forgotten what autumn/winter is like with a damp dog! Hoping one of these will cut down time after a muddy walk. Sometimes it seems my whole morning is spent either walking or drying a dog!!

ColleagueFromMars · 02/10/2020 21:00

OP, your dog definitely does not need a coat, look at him!

I have the most nesh chihuahua who shivers and would refuse to go anywhere if he could (he's 4kg so he has no choice!) in the cold and wet, so begrudgingly got him a coat and several jumpers. My previous dogs were more doggy dogs and even when elderly and I thought they might appreciate it, never were thankful for coats. Beware of if your anthropomorphisising your dog, that's all.

MsMarvellous · 03/10/2020 08:32

Our Dalmatian has one for winter walks up mountains when it gets properly cold and snowy. But otherwise he doesn't need one.

TokyoSushi · 03/10/2020 10:17

I think you've all convinced me that we don't need an outdoor coat, but we might need a drying coat instead! Thanks!!

My jrt seems to have magical powers that stop her getting wet or dirty. It's often commented on by other dog owners in the park on wet days but she absolutely hates gong out in even the lightest drizzle. Do coats actually help with this at all? I've been wondering so this thread is helpful.

ekidmxcl · 03/10/2020 16:53

This coat. Fleece lined and waterproof. He comes back from a long walk in the rain totally dry where the coat was.

RandomMess · 04/10/2020 21:14

@midnightstar66 our Parsons is the same but yes a warm waterproof coat gets her out in all but the heaviest rain!!!

joystir59 · 06/10/2020 18:27

Our JRT won't wear a coat unless it's the absolutely bitterly coldest day and then I have to muzzle him to get it on. He hates velcro. He goes rigid and refuses to move generally if you try and put anything on him except his walking harness. He does wake me up in the night with a tiny whine which means he is cold and he wants me to cover him up in his blanket.

Lurchermom · 06/10/2020 18:41

Yes, but she's a shorthaired sighthound and the general rule is if you need a coat, so do they!
We got ours from Fur, Feather and Fin - lovely green waxed (like a Barbour) and a fleece inside. She loves it, wags her tail every time we get it down for her. Looking out for a lightweight rain coat for when it's warm but wet as she hates the rain.
