Hi,

So Friday afternoon I got the call that nobody wants. Our vet asked me to pull over, as I was driving with hands free and she wanted my full attention. Right away I knew it must be bad.

They've found what they strongly suspect is a tumour in her bladder. She said it could be something less sinister, but she's fairly certain it's bad news. She also said how incredibly rare this is in a dog of her age.

I basically haven't stopped crying since then. Feeling utterly drained and I just can't seem to get my head around it.

She's still a pup. Bouncy and full of life and of course, mischief.

We have already made the decision that if it is that, we won't go down the chemo route. We don't want to put her through all that for a few more painful months, but then I suddenly realised that with covid, we probably won't be allowed in with her when she's being PTS and I can't bear it, quite honestly.

If she was an old dog, I think I could accept it. I would still of course be mortified, but at least she'd have had a full life. This just seems so wrong. We also have another dog who will miss her to pieces. It breaks my heart.

I suppose I'm just posting for a bit of moral support. I need to find my strength from somewhere. This is likely going to be an incredibly difficult few months...or weeks Sad

Hi @ItBurns - is there any news?

ItBurns · 29/09/2020 10:05

Hi,

Sorry it's been a while since I posted. Has been a bit crazy here, but nothing really to report about ddog.

We don't have our consultation until the end of the week.

Generally she seems well, but occasionally is a bit wobbly in her back legs.

Unfortunately there are a lot of stressful things going on here right now. I just want to know where we are, so we can start to process.

Just sending some virtual support, I had a dog with three types of cancer (not all at once) - two treatable and one not.

Forget everything you’ve experienced or imagined as a human on chemotherapy or radiotherapy, having surgery or other treatments - it’s a very very very different approach for dogs. They tend to tolerate it well, especially as the treatment goals are so different for animals where vets are guided more by quality of life rather than prolonging it at all costs (which is often the case with humans).

Cancer as you know is just another word for a huge range of conditions of which many (most?) are highly treatable or curable.

There was a thread in AIBU once where many otherwise perfectly intelligent MNers were all horrified and loudly declaring they wouldn’t ‘put their dogs through it’ but would instantly euthanise! I didn’t realise it was so poorly understood. Hope you get the best help possible 💕🐾

Hope your appointment with the specialist goes well. We are heading back to ours for a check up this week. This is a different situation and type of cancer of course but my dog's consultation with the specialist was £290 (ouch!) and chemo doses were £200 each and he had 4 doses. He has scans every 3 months with blood tests which costs me around £100 each time but at our regular vets to save a bit of money as our insurance limit isn't huge unfortunately. So it's not awful. Of course it's a different situation but just to reassure that the consultation at least hopefully won't max you out!

Hopefully as well you'll get some answers, we found the specialists (special cancer unit) were great. Fingers crossed for your lovely dog.

Hi,

I just wanted to update you all....

So the ultrasound showed absolutely nothing sinister at all Smile We are still in shock tbh, but obviously in a good way.

We were obviously confused by what our vet could have seen that she was almost certain was cancer. The specialist said that whatever she had seen, it isn't there anymore.

All very odd, but we're obviously just over the moon that our gorgeous ddog is ok.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice on here. It really meant a lot.

@stockpilingallthecheese, wishing your ddog and you all the best Flowers

What a roller coaster ride. So glad it's good news but you must be feeling like wtf happened?

ItBurns · 03/10/2020 15:31

Yes @BiteyShark. I think that sums it up perfectly.

Great news , but seriously I’d look at changing vets , also if the vet you saw who did the original exam was not the senior partner I’d be putting in some kind of complaint as you have had all that stress and the expense of a referral for no reason .

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/10/2020 18:10

Yes, I'd be thinking about changing vets - or at least having a chat with a senior partner and expressing my misgivings.

Glad your dog seems to be AOK.

stockpilingallthecheese · 04/10/2020 08:49

Wonderful news!!

Mydogmylife · 04/10/2020 21:11

Excellent news. However I would absolutely be changing my vet, and making a formal complaint re the treatment received which, in the face of it, seems shoddy

Collidascope · 04/10/2020 21:14

Just seen this. What a lovely outcome!

cosmopolitanplease · 06/10/2020 09:41

I'm so happy to read your update OP Smile wonderful news but yes, I would change vets and tell the original vet exactly why.

doodleygirl · 06/10/2020 11:04

Fab outcome, so pleased for you all, you now have many happy romps ahead of you.

I agree with others, look for a new vet.

Notasyoungasiwas · 06/10/2020 19:38

That's AMAZING news - what a relief for you all Smile

ItBurns · 07/10/2020 14:15

Thanks so much for all your messages.

Ddog is getting spoilt rotten Grin This will have to stop at some point...

Shall definitely be raising our concerns with the practice and then shall be looking into registering somewhere else.
