I would love another dog so that we end up with a lovely mix of old and young dogs. It wouldn't be for a couple of years and we have the room to keep them all separate if a puppy is annoying. I like to think about my next dog breed like most people plan their wardrobe!

I'm thinking spaniel sized but not necessarily a spaniel.

Musts:
Friendly genetic disposition to people and other dogs
Intelligent/biddable
Preferably non shedding or not crazy shedding. Can send to groomers regularly.

Must not be:
Not a lap dog

CokeyCola - you already have a formidable list of dog breeds BUT I know your absolute dream dog is a Tibetan Terrier!
They are medium sized - no lap dog!
They love, love humans
They like other dogs
They are very intelligent and very trainable.
But they are also a bit stubborn, can think for themselves and are the real class clowns of the dog world.

@CokeyCola and if you are still not convinced:

Any of the smaller terriers (I mean small in the main terrier group, not the toy ones)

Very friendly, and double coats are low maintenance and don't shed much at all. Usually quite energetic (but not nuts, IYSWIM) and a good fit to family life.

They can be a bit obstinate, but if you get from a puppy and put the effort into early socialisation and training then that shouldn't be an insuperable problem

@ChickensMightFly

You need a Lagotto Romagnolo. They tick every single one of your boxes and then some. Superb dogs, water dog so has curly hair rather than fur as such. Fantastic personality naturally interested in pleasing owner and able to join in with all the family activities.
Second the Lagotto Romagnolo suggestion.

Non shedding, really clever so eager to learn and make you happy, loves being part of a family, loves cuddles and is so sweet and friendly.

They do need quite a bit of exercising and activities to keep their minds busy but sounds like that’s what you’re after!

A Bedlington would fit the bill.
We like the rare breeds as many are excellent pets but are rare as no money in breeding them
These are ace

Another vote for a retriever or water dog. We've just got a retriever (English Cream) on the recommendation of my sister and she's has all the characteristics you listed. Intelligent, easy to train and gentle but lots of fun.

OMG the Dinmont Terriers are gorgeous. Never knew they existed!

@Sunnydaysstillhere OP said she was looking for intelligent/biddable, so... (fellow lurcher owner here) Grin

Funf · 17/09/2020 20:54

@TheOriginalMrsMoss
We only found them a few years ago they are a hard dog to describe, Loyal Fun Companion. But remember they are terriers never yappy but rarely bark and never at other dogs etc as they are hunters and that would give them away. Stubborn but just takes a bit more care with training.
I can't see us ever being with out one, such a great family fit.
Like so many of the rare breeds they only have small litters so you won't make much if any money by breeding them, often difficult to find as only 300 or so born a year, but breeders are generally helpful and responsible.
Back to the OP, its very hard some dogs just fit your life style some don't. Size and moulting was our big consideration, whilst we like dogs of all sizes and would love a wolf hound we just dont have the space to give it the room it would need.

Best dog to get is a rescue dog.

FrankiesKnuckle · 17/09/2020 21:03

I'm really interested in the lagotto,
I saw one at crufts this year (on the TV) and I've read quite a bit about them. The breed seems to match our requirements of non shedding and wanting a good amount of exercise. Are they good with older children, 9/10 yr old?
Are there many breeders in the Uk, specifically SE?

spidermomma · 17/09/2020 21:16

I have a shar pei. She's so laid back and lazy she just strolls around the house like a clumsy donkey we call her. She goes the groomers every month and has little diamanté's on her ears haha. She looks like a bear and has a purple tounge she's a queeeeen !!! Has 1 big shed a year when she changes coat but other then that nothing but we use w horse brush that works wonders. She isn't a high maintenance dog either just loves her food and only short walks and a comfy bed ! Also great with all the kids xx

My children are older teens so I’m not sure about younger kids I’m afraid. My DS and she play pretty vigorously together and she absolutely adores him. But obviously he’s much bigger and knows when it’s too much etc. I have a friend who has had her Lagotto since before she had her DS who is now 11 I think and all has been fine. From what I’ve read they are meant to be good with children. Our girl is the sweetest dog and loves everyone.

In terms of breeders we found our breeder on Champdogs breed pages so that might be a good place to start.

Good luck.

FrankiesKnuckle · 18/09/2020 21:45

Thanks @pistachioicecream
They do look gorgeous, we are still a year or 2 away from potentially getting one but no harm swotting up now Smile

Poshjock · 18/09/2020 22:24

Mine is an F1B Labradoodle, which means he's 3/4 poodle. Looks and acts like a standard poodle. I honestly didn't think much of poodles til I got him, and he's a wonderful dog. Frighteningly intelligent, independant, full of character, loves a play but very easy to train and very quick to catch on to what concept you are training him. He will make a brilliant dog for agility. Loves attention. No shedding whatsoever and you can style his fur. Sometimes we let him long and wooly and sometimes we keep him short and velvety.

Have you considered a Cavachon? Non moulting, mine will sleep for hours and walk for miles. Good company fairly bomb proof. Unless a squirrel is spotted.
This adorable and much loved lady is my Loli.

I have a Jack Russell who I adore but won't sell to you as I'm not sure the breed fits all your criteria, spaniels are fab. We keep meeting a Shiba Inu at the park who is utterly adorable and my dream dog of the future. I'd also love a Boston terrier which may meet your requirements.
