I would love another dog so that we end up with a lovely mix of old and young dogs. It wouldn't be for a couple of years and we have the room to keep them all separate if a puppy is annoying. I like to think about my next dog breed like most people plan their wardrobe!

I'm thinking spaniel sized but not necessarily a spaniel.

Musts:
Friendly genetic disposition to people and other dogs
Intelligent/biddable
Preferably non shedding or not crazy shedding. Can send to groomers regularly.

Must not be:
Not a lap dog

I'm biased, I have a labrador and he is fantastic, clever, loves a swim and fantastic with other dogs and kids.

The shedding though.... He gets followed about with a Dyson 3 times a day but he's worth it 🤣

Another vote for Miniature Poodle. At risk of a lap/cuddly dog but very obedient and easy to train so if you could resist those beautiful almond eyes you'd just have to give your off/down command.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, doesn't shed, loyal, very family oriented, just a beautiful dog all round. Here's Eddie

Another vote for Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. Fantastic dogs, non-shedding, perfect size.

I still miss my girl and we lost her years ago. We did agility, obedience and heelwork to music together. She earned her bronze, silver and gold good citizen awards by 13 months old. She was an absolute dream to train, so keen to please and loved every minute of it. Lovely family dogs, with a great sense of humour, although some lines are a bit more bonkers than others, so it’s worth doing your research.

I loved her beautiful silky coat, did all her coat care myself - learned via a video I bought from the breed club. Kept her coat long when she was younger and trimmed it myself when she was elderly and didn’t want messing about with constant grooming. She didn’t go to a groomer once in her 14 and a half years.

Not sure I have a photo on here to attach, but will have a look.

@IjustbelieveinMe, beautiful. I miss that Wheaten smile. Smile

Not the best photos, as they’re photos of actual photos, iyswim. One of her as a pup with her big brother (Boxer x GSD) and one as an adult with our 8 week old Border Collie x Belgian Shepherd pup.

We took on a rescue Golden Doodle
(standard poodle / golden retriever mix)

She is lively but gentle, smart and affectionate & non shedding too.

Very lucky to have her.

We also have a Spanish Water Dog (2 actually) and agree with everything @Girlintheframe said about them. Mine are 8yrs and 4yrs and whilst having their own personalities, both have very similar characteristics and behaviours. They also have an “off switch”! They are happy with long walks through the woods, but also content with tramps round the grounds which was useful during the severe lockdown we had here.

@Mydogmylife we must have drawn the short straw with my Lhasa's. stubborn, zero recall, picky eaters and both failed puppy training class. I get super excited if I manage to get a "paw" from them!

I don't have her any more as she passed away due to old age but Old English Sheepdog 😍

Thanksfor you.

Wheatens are the cutest puppies because their colouring is so dark which they grow out of. I too do Eddies grooming myself. He has made such an impact on me and changed my life so much for the better.

We are about to get our first Wheaten and I can't wait!

Report

@mrsfeatherbottom - fantastic! I have never had another, as my girl was a hard act to follow and I didn’t want to make comparisons. If your Wheaten is half the dog ours was you will be blessed. Good luck and remember to come back and show us some photos! Grin

@Sunnydaysstillhere. I don't want to be THAT busy! I've heard you have to be a pretty experienced owner to cope with your lovely breed.

@CokeyCola I currently have a Lurcher and have recently lost one. I wouldn’t say you need to be an experienced owner, although it can depend on the cross, with Saluki mixes very often being more er, complex.

My lovely boy will be 15 in just over a month and is the most steadfast, loyal, sweetheart. He’s Deerhound/Saluki x Greyhound/Bearded Collie, and fits your list of requirements other than size (he’s 24” to the shoulder) and shedding - he is an extreme shedder.

A short coated Whippet cross Lurcher might suit you.

Here’s my old boy one at 12 months old and one this summer.

I have greyhounds but they may be a little big for you but tick all your boxes.

Maybe a whippet? There’s an amazing whippet agility team right now. Very smart little dogs.

Poodle or Spanish Water Dog would be worth investigating as the ones I know tick all your boxes. I have no personal experience - I have beagles, which tick one out of three!

I do agility with my irish terrier. I started because she was an, er, active puppy. Three years on we compete in local agility shows and have a lot of fun.
