How long does your dog sleep at night?

We have been considering getting a rescue dog for a long time. Ideally a young adult dog that’s already toilet trained. As a family we have lots of love and time to put into a dog in the day.
My issue is sleep. I need plenty or I feel awful. I’m menopausal and tired and honestly if I’m not in bed for 9 hours a night feel shocking as I am awake a lot in the night. Im generally in bed 10-7 or 11-8 depending on the day of the week.
It occurred to me last night that this probably means we can’t get a dog? I assume most can’t manage this long overnight and it wouldn’t be fair to them. My priority if absolutely to the dog and I’ve been overthinking this for months now.

My dog is 10 years old and sleeps 10-8am then I let him out for a toilet and he sleeps on and off all day

My 6 month old poodle cross loves her sleep. I realise it could change as she gets older but she will happily sleep from 11 and there’s been times we’ve not woken until 9. She sleeps on my bed and goes when I let her out but she’s not desperate. My old Weimaraner would have to be let out by 7am or he couldn’t hold it.

My Lhasa apso is 5 and she sleeps beside us in bed. She goes to bed when we do and sleeps all night, and doesn't get up until we do.

Not sure how long he would sleep for exactly but he refuses to get up when I go to work at 8.30 (last night walk circa 11pm) and dd rarely is up much before 11am. Sometimes he's still refusing to get up when I get home for lunch. He's a lazy dog

I'm a night owl as is one of my sons, and my husband and the other son are larks. So on average she has her last wee at midnight-1pm then she'll be let out at about 8am. She could go longer though, she's a lazy mare and sometimes we come down and she's still snoring obliviously on the sofa or in her bed (she's 6 nearly7).

My girl has a bladder of steel, I often have to throw her outside about 10 am, often later. She scuttles outside, has her breakfast and goes back to sleep. She is 11 but has always loved her sleep.

Our 3yr JRT sleeps as long as we do. Gets a last wee between 11pm and 12am usually, then is out cold until we get up. On workdays, she'll go back to bed for a few hours after we get up too.
She is also the Queen of Napping. Loves a nap.

I have a lurcher with a bladder of steal. If it’s raining he refuses to go out for a pee at night. He can easily hold for 15 hours and often when I get up in the morning he will still stay in bed. Mines great for lazy lie ins and will stay snuggled up as long as I do!

I will advise though if you need unbroken sleep don’t let the buggers sleep on your bed they have no bed etiquette at all and will sprawl across the duvet with their feet jabbing you in the back or head.

Now our dog is older he will generally sleep as long as we sleep.
Was a bit of a killer when he was a pup and the clocks changed tho!
Now he goes out for his last wee around 7.30pm, goes to bed around 9.30pm and will sleep till around 6am. If I'm up earlier and he hears me he will get up, equally if we sleep till 7 he will stay in bed and not make a peep.
If your getting a rescue dog a lot might depend on when he has been used to

Hufflepuffseaker · 01/09/2020 05:58

Mine takes herself to bed at 8pm. Take her for a pee at about 11pm. She's up and down like a brides nightie until about 3am when she settles. Doesn't matter if I try and keep her up later.
It's like having a toddler. She's 3. Doesn't help atm she's on restricted exercise due to bad leg.
Hoping at some point she will realise night time = sleep, day time = play.
She's a rescue btw .

My five year old lurcher likes to go to bed between 8.30 and 9pm. That's when she has her final pee and then that's her till I get up at 7.30.

Even if it's torrential rain and she won't go out at bedtime, she's fine till morning.

The only dog I had who couldn't go that long had a congenital bladder problem. Even then she was usually ok from around 10.30 till 7.

Rhootintootinboo · 01/09/2020 10:16

I reckon they learn to sleep when you do. I thought I was lucky with the Springer who will sleep and sleep and then I added a rescue a couple of months back and he is exactly the same. But they both sleep in my room so are not hearing up time signals until it’s up time decided by me whenever that may be. I couldn’t bear having to get up at 5 or 6 every day including weekends.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 01/09/2020 10:57

Unless he is eating, walking or playing my dog is basically asleep. During the day that's wherever I am. At night he sleeps downstairs (although he has run of the house he never sleeps upstairs) and some days he comes up to see me at about 7.30 ish and other days I go downstairs first. It's usual for me to fine him outside the bathroom door when I come out of the shower. I usually take him for a wee just before I go to bed which can be as early as 9.30 and as late as midnight. Some weekends we sleep in a bit (never really past 9) and that's fine too.

I think they just fit around whatever's happening in the house. They're pretty easy once out of the puppy stage.

My 4 yo GSD will happily sleep for 12 hours straight. But he gets 2 very long walks and plenty of mental stimulation in between.
