How long does your dog sleep at night?

We have been considering getting a rescue dog for a long time. Ideally a young adult dog that’s already toilet trained. As a family we have lots of love and time to put into a dog in the day.
My issue is sleep. I need plenty or I feel awful. I’m menopausal and tired and honestly if I’m not in bed for 9 hours a night feel shocking as I am awake a lot in the night. Im generally in bed 10-7 or 11-8 depending on the day of the week.
It occurred to me last night that this probably means we can’t get a dog? I assume most can’t manage this long overnight and it wouldn’t be fair to them. My priority if absolutely to the dog and I’ve been overthinking this for months now.

10 year old cockerpoo another bladder of steel he takes to his bed at 7pm and I have to wake him up and force him out at 10pm, he then sleeps till at least 7am, but will happily do to 9am.

HAB86 · 31/08/2020 14:08

Mine go out for their last wee at 10pm then will sleep till 8am ish. They do not stir when my husband gets up for work at 5.30am, they wait till I get up and are actually quite huffed if asked to get up earlier, ha ha.

RaininSummer · 31/08/2020 14:20

12 hours if we are being super lazy.

MaMisled · 31/08/2020 14:22

From toilet trained to 8 years old, ours sleep from 11pm to 8.30am......9.30am.

nancybotwinbloom · 31/08/2020 14:28

Chihuahua - he's in his crate
From about 10pm till about 7am.

VacMan · 31/08/2020 14:32

Ours can go 12 hours, he sleeps at the bottom of our bed.
When he wants a wee he taps us on the face.

Sometimes we have to drag the lazy sod up and make him go for a wee.

makingbacon · 31/08/2020 14:55

Last wee at 9-9.30pm, first wee at 8ish but he will happily wait till 9/9.30am!

Catsrus · 31/08/2020 15:27

@ThatLibraryMiss

If you're asking how long between wees, Small Dog has been known to cross his legs for up to 16 hours if the alternative is a rainy garden. He snoozes next to me all evening, goes out for a trot around the block to empty him before bedtime then sleeps on my bed until I get up up to ten hours later. When we go downstairs, food is a greater driver than the need to relieve himself.
lol - I've got your dog's twin! He takes one look outside if it's raining and turns around again !
sallyshirt · 31/08/2020 17:22

Mine can do at least 12 hours.
But I also have a cat flap which she uses too - would that be an option for you?

pullingmyhairout2 · 31/08/2020 17:27

We have a lurcher and she happily sleep from 10pm til gone 8am. Depending on when we get up.

Yokohamajojo · 31/08/2020 18:34

Our dog is almost 4 and sleeps as long as we sleep! If we get up early he gets up if we fancy staying in bed til 12 he will too. Occasionally he will get up in the middle of the night needing a pee or a poo but that's almost always our fault as we have forgot to get him out before we went to bed!

Tiggerdig · 31/08/2020 20:21

Cat flap interesting but presumably that’s only for small dogs? I mean a Labrador sized flap could fit anyone through!
Thanks all I am encouraged. I am taking this is a positive rather than the possibility that everyone with nocturnal pets is just avoiding my thread.

Bella a Lhasa Apso goes to bed at 8pm (you can set your clock by her) she stays in bed until I start getting ready to walk her which could be as early as 7am or as late as 9am depending on weather or what's happening that day.

fitflopqueen · 31/08/2020 21:45

4 year old springer here, she would like to go to bed (ours) by about 9, sulks on the stairs, usually i don't go up til 11ish and will do at least 10 hours before she is cajoled out for a morning wee!

Rigamorph · 31/08/2020 21:50

Lurcher goes from 11pm to 8am (sometimes longer if it's raining outside). Has had occasional wee in the house tho, so sometimes he doesn't let me know if he needs to go. (Was a rescue, not toilet trained as a pup).

OpEd · 31/08/2020 21:51

Both of my dogs do a full night, one puppy and one older dog.

AriesTheRam · 31/08/2020 21:52

11 hours

allfurcoatnoknickers · 31/08/2020 21:53

My Jack Russells happily do 9pm until 8am. Usually it's more like 10pm-7:30am but honestly they both love a lie in, so if we stay in bed, they do too.

My late Cairn Terrier was an epic snoozer. She once, by her own choice, went 14 hours overnight because it was raining outside and she refused to get out of bed.

DCIHoops · 31/08/2020 21:55

My dog sleeps right through - 11pm to 7am. She does sleep on my bed though (always has done) and is very cosy and contented

Pipandmum · 31/08/2020 21:58

Since adulthood I let my dogs out in the garden about 10 or 11pm. I know the female does a wee but not always the male. They are then fine until about 8 the next day, sometimes later. If one needs to go they let me know, but that's rare. They generally sleep in my room, either on the bed or on a bean bag, sometimes in one of the kids rooms.

mellowgreenspring · 31/08/2020 22:05

We have three dogs all different breeds and ages and all are in bed at 11 and don't disturb us till 7.30-8am.

As pups they are up lots more! So good if you get an older dog they maybe easier to settle into a routine.

wigglerose · 31/08/2020 22:08

My 4 year old golden retriever dozes all evening, she moves every half hour to two hours when her spot gets warm. When we go to bed and she'll sleep through till around 5:30am (she moves less frequently and doesn't move space much, then starts the doze/move cycle again until we get around 7-7:30.

copperoliver · 31/08/2020 22:10

I have 3 dogs. 2 sleep 9 pm until 9 am they are 3 and 6 years. The youngest one aged 1 sleeps from 9 until 7:30 but should be longer as he gets older. X

Wholeholes · 31/08/2020 22:15

Our old dog was a big fan of a lie in. He’d happily go from 10pm-10am if we were snoozing with him. In his last few months he would wake us up to go out in the night and it was a bit of a shock to the system after so many years of good sleep. I didn’t begrudge him his nighttime wees though.

Sackofpotatoes · 31/08/2020 22:25

Have a 3yo Jack Russell X he got in his bed at 8:30pm and that will be him until tomorrow. You have to physically push him out the door for a last wee. I think left to it, he would probably stay in bed past 10am. Loves a lie in. Definitely not a ready by your side at dawn dog.
