Getting a puppy but holiday booked 2 weeks after

After losing our beloved dog in July we have been offered the chance of a puppy the first week of October (will be 8 weeks) however we have flights to see my in laws in Spain 2 weeks later. We haven’t seen them since Xmas due to pandemic and also we will be celebrating my daughters 16th while we are there. What shall I do about pup. Breeder can’t help, will I have to end up staying home? Anyone else had this issue

You either go on the holiday and not get the puppy, or you get the puppy and stay home. Those are your choices.

Agreed. You can't get a new puppy then go away so soon afterwards.

You can't do both. Can't the breeder keep the puppy two more weeks? We picked ours up at 9 weeks but she would happily have kept our girl longer.. I'd be a bit wary of a breeder who is that desperate to get rid of the puppies...are they being socialised?

I agree. If the breeder can’t keep the puppy until you return, you will have to forego the puppy or the holiday.

Sorry just realised you said two weeks later. You can't pick it up at 8 weeks, settle it in and then leave it with someone else.. just no.

Breeder a old family friend.I was a bit surprised when she said she couldn’t hang on for a few weeks just said she had a lot of weekends away planned etc and would be awkward to help. She felt we would miss out on bonding time if didn’t have pup at 8 weeks. It looks like I will have to stay home, can’t not have pup as kids desperate

Very odd that the breeder won’t just change collection date. I assume you have offered to pay them for the extra month?

Given that quarantine after holidays is getting more likely, there's a reasonable chance that your holiday won't even be a feasible option.

Go with the pup (which you know you want to do anyway) and reschedule the trip for after Easter

My friend had a litter and said by 8 weeks she is worn out.

I'd maybe ask a friend to have the puppy and then have a phased hand over so it's not traumatised by two big changes at such a young age or could your partner stay at home with the puppy? Maybe a friend could house sit and puppy sit. A change of scenery would probably be appreciated. If they can stay a few days either side with you there then ideal.

No, don't do this. Pup has to bond with you.

If you want a quick holiday, don't get the pup

Yes I expect there is a good chance holiday will be delayed and this will not be an issue, just wondered if anyone else had had this. Breeder lovely by the way not even asked for deposit as family friend

We had a similar problem with a busy period in work. Our breeder held onto the pup and we had him at 11 weeks.

Jeez I know some breeders give others a bad name but come on, they might have plans! That is allowed. They will have been at home with a pregnant dog then a litter of puppies for at least 10 weeks, assuming they didn't go far last two of pregnancy.

Taking a puppy back two weeks after delivery either means unsettling it again or keeping it an extra four weeks. 8 to 12 age wise is toilet training and socialisation as soon as able. Plus lots of other stuff.

I'm sure the breeder would have done it if they could but they leave at an age for a reason and people are allowed a life.

I don't think you can do both at that point in the puppies development. Not unless there is someone able to move into your home and Keep things exactly as you would. Even then it's a risk I wouldn't take.

We did this. Puppy at 8 weeks, dh and I both home for a week, then he went away for work so I was home alone with puppy for a week then I flew away to join him for 10 days and in laws moved in.

No major traumas for puppy. They mostly eat, sleep and poo at that age. But in laws were there all the time. You could try puppy home care. There’s a v highly recommended dog walker in our area who would have moved in and done this if we were stuck, also a v good dog home stay too.

Honestly though, your holiday Probably will get cancelled. Get the puppy.

You need to choose - puppy or holiday. You can't do both, it's just not fair on your puppy. At 10 weeks they'll still be getting used to you and your home, life and routine. Disrupting that again for a holiday is massively unfair - either take the puppy and miss the holiday, or accept the timing is wrong and get another puppy from a different breeder next year.

Those two weeks are literally the weeks that are important for socialisation. I wouldn’t want to put that on someone else it is too important

Puppies are very very hard work and demanding. You must make the commitment to the pup or not have one, once you've bought him or her you cannot go on holiday straight away. The pup will need toilet training, will cry for it's mumma for several nights and you will need to get it into a routine.

Thank you all for your comments, I am going to stay home with pup and my husband and children will go and see his parents. Can't give up the chance of this pup my children would be so upset

It's one or the other - a puppy or a holiday.

There's no way around it to make both the puppy and the holiday 2 weeks later, compatible.
