I’m I mad or is this an insane amount for a cross breed dog?!

Sometimes shoddy breeders will breed mixed pups to avoid the question of kc registration, health testing, and the tax man / licensing authorities. £5k is a lot for any breed though. I wonder if the seller bought the dog to deliberately make quick money on?

OliveButler · 28/06/2020 14:44

I bought a greyhound / labrador cross for £2.5k (she bought him during lockdown and surprise surprise now has no one to look after him when she goes back to work). It was a word of mouth sale but I had looked on pets4homes a while back and the cost is astronomical. They don't have problems selling though. The last dog I had was a rescue and I think it only cost a £300 donation to the charity so we were a bit Shock
I do worry about the conditions he may have inherited but I guess you could get disease with any dog.

Reedwarbler · 28/06/2020 16:08

It is people just cashing in. I think people are looking at their family dogs and seeing pound signs. Terrible. I would quite like another little dog to be a friend to our toy poodle, but not at the current prices. I will wait a year, when I bet there will be loads around for more sensible prices, or something available in rescue.
Wait till furlough finishes - I am sure there will suddenly be a glut of dogs.

Boysnme · 28/06/2020 16:17

There are so many people selling puppies for a ridiculous price just now. We got a cockapoo last year for much less than they are now asking for. I’m also seeing so many posts on many dog forums of people being scammed so there’s no way I’d be buying any puppy at the moment.

pepperpod28 · 28/06/2020 16:18

People are asking insane amounts atm for dogs and pups. It can only be lockdown, and there are going to be a lot of poor older pups up for rehoming after the summer imo.

I lost my dog late last year, he was coming up on 10, KC reg pure breed and cost me £300. He had only the best of everything - food, insurance, any and all medical treatment he needed. Now I'm ready for another dog in my life and I can't afford one because people are asking a couple of grand outright for a mongrel and sticking a "designer" name on it! £1400 for a "shi-poo-chon" or some such ain't it.

Kaykay066 · 28/06/2020 16:47

I’m not keen on these poodle mixes so I wouldn’t get one. We lost our dog in may but had already decided to get a puppy to join him. It’s hard work researching breeders and getting the right one with pups whose parents have all the correct health checks etc. Luckily we have a breeder and a fixed price nothing inflated for a golden retriever pup. Our lovely boy was a guide dog pup so didn’t go through any of this with him. I’ve had mixed breeds before but couldn’t get a rescue due to my youngest son but will def consider when he’s older. Just have a very empty house now until December/January when our pup will be ready

Pikachubaby · 28/06/2020 16:54

I am just shocked, why are cockerpoos so popular? 5k Shock

My car is worth less than that, and my —mongrel— cross breed dog was £200 (but that’s 5 yrs ago)

Glitterb · 28/06/2020 16:58

I highly doubt she will sell the poor dog for that amount, it’s ridiculous!
I paid much much less for a pedigree!

CallmeAngelina · 28/06/2020 22:37

Well, I admit I might be biased, but mine is completely gorgeous. He's a real "people" dog - loves everyone and everyone loves him. He's a fluffy ball of cuteness and the best-natured guy you could ever wish for.

But I agree that 5K is insane. Ours is now 9 years old, and they were quite rare and infinitely cheaper then.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 28/06/2020 22:46

Insane. I would expect a proper breeding crufts standard purebred puppy of a rare breed for that price not a 2 year mongrel however wonderful their owner think it is.

rollercoastermum · 29/06/2020 00:04

Wow!! We bought our cockapoo for £600 last year. Dogs trust has some pups too of this breed - well about 3 months ago as we were thinking of bringing home another puppy!! Lovely breed, very calm and mad at the same time. It's a ridiculous amount to pay. There are some decently priced ones on pets4homes if you are willing to travel a long way..

OneNewName · 29/06/2020 04:33

I know, I came on to start a thread about puppy prices. I saw £2,500 for a GSD that was homeless due to someone going into care home ... allegedly. The good thing is that people may be more likely to adopt, though rescues are going to be overflowing when these puppies hit teenagerhood.

OneNewName · 29/06/2020 04:34

Ironically, the cheapest pups I've seen have been properly bred and tested.

OneNewName · 29/06/2020 04:52

You wouldn’t know, you can’t see which bits from which dress until well after you’ve bought it... could have a different front and back, the skirt could be 8 panels of two different lengths, it could have half a scoop neck and half a sweetheart neckline, it might not even work properly as a dress anymore, it could be a play suit now...you’ve no clue.

But if they were both two similar and quality dresses, that would be less of a risk. I'm thinking two complementary gun dogs, not the crazy crosses I saw earlier or some of the high energy dogs crossed with dogs that can't breathe properly.

Caitlin73 · 29/06/2020 11:13

There's an interesting video on Sky News site about the current demand for puppies.

tabulahrasa · 29/06/2020 14:52

“But if they were both two similar and quality dresses, that would be less of a risk.”

But still more risk than just paying less and knowing pretty much what you’re getting.

I mean they could be identical dresses apart from pockets and buttons, but you still don’t know whether you’re getting any pockets and buttons, a random amount or all of them.

I mean, you might love pockets and end up with none at all, you might think pockets ruin the line of a dress and you get 4, you might not particularly care about pockets but you end up with just that one and that’s just plain annoying whether you wanted them to begin with or not.

OneNewName · 29/06/2020 16:57

@tabulahrasa But if you were that worried about buttons and pockets then you wouldn't get a crossbred. If you love buttons and pockets regardless of number or absence of each, then that's fine.

tabulahrasa · 29/06/2020 17:37

Except if you’re not bothered about pockets and buttons, what is the extra money for? When you could just buy either cheaper dress...

I had a dog once that was literally just a dog, no clue what breeds were in there and it was fairly interesting to adopt a puppy described as a medium breed collie cross that grew up to be a 40kg waist height dog and quite clearly had little to no collie in him... but it’d have been odd to pay more for him because we didn’t know what he was, lol

I mean yeah obviously you don’t get that level of uncertainty with a cockapoo, but it isn’t logical when they cost a lot more than a well bred pedigree.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 29/06/2020 18:00

That’s strange, I saw an advert for a 2 year old working cocker today for £5000 and thought it must be a typo.

The dog looks anxious and nervy in the photos.
Seems really dodgy.

A lot of gundogs are being stolen at the moment. It's a constant theme on gundog FB pages. Very depressing.

It's funny how none of these so called beloved family pets can sit nicely and look towards the 'owner' when their photo is being taken. I hope they aren't stolen as PP said. Sad

Sitdowncupoftea · 02/07/2020 16:49

why not go to a rescue. Ive just adopted a 6 month rescue pup. I cant believe someone would pay that when there are loads in rescues.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/07/2020 19:33

Lots of threads on here started by OPs who haven't been able to find a rescue that will accept them due to age of their DC/ their cat/ where they live/ their working hours. I had the same experience when my DC were small.

Eveta · 02/07/2020 19:37

That's bizarre. They're a cross breed. Get a miniature poodle instead, they look similar with long hair, have a great temperament, and don't cost anywhere near as much.

Hippofrog · 02/07/2020 19:43

That advert is hideous “ I haven’t got anuff time” ?
