What do you take on a walk?

I recently popped out for a dog walk, which ended up being longer than expected because it was so lovely. However, I'd left the house in leggings and a t-shirt so no pockets - I'd tied poo bags to the lead handle, shoved my phone in my bra and carried my keys. It was not ideal so I've started thinking about getting a little bag/bum bag with essentials in, for those kind of walks in the summer when I am not wearing a coat/pockets.

I just caught myself eyeing up swiss army knives and think I may have gone too far Grin

Bring me back into line. What would you take for a 1-2 hour walk, on a not-too-hot day, for a walk in the countryside?

On our daily longer walk, I’ll take a backpack with our long lead, water bottle for both of us, poo bags, my inhaler, phone, tissues, antibac gel, keys.

I'm not sure why you are fretting so much. Just get a small waist pack or mini cross body bag. Surely this is not a complicated thing to figure out? Even for a mad dog lady Wink

My phone and poo bags.

My phone unlocks my front door so I don’t need to take keys which is good.

Depends which dog I'm walking. Ddog1 I take keys, phone, poo bags. Her lead if I can find it.

Ddog2 I also take a grab loop and a bike horn in case another dog comes up to us. He is always on lead as he is reactive to other dogs but if another dog approaches us, he will go for it. So horn to distract them and loop to drag him away from a fight.

If I’m going for a short walk up to an hour then treat pouch, poo bags, phone and keys. I have a few soft shell jackets I wear it tie round my waist with zip pockets. If it’s longer or we’re exploring somewhere new then I take a rucksack with that plus a water bottle and bowl, drink and snack for me, Swiss Army knife and spare slip lead and possibly waterproofs/extra layers.

Poo bags, mobile, maybe a couple of dog biscuits... he drinks in the river so I dont tend to need anything else. We tend to do 2 1hr walks per day and we’ve never needed anything else!

True of most things on mumsnet!

Personally walk accessories are my favourite and I have many dog walking bits and pieces. OP, have a look on Etsy, lots of nice things.

Yokohamajojo · 04/06/2020 09:39

I always make sure I have pockets and usually only bring treats, poo bags, phone and house keys

Glitterb · 04/06/2020 11:32

I have leggings with a pocket for my phone, keys and treats. Poo bags are attached to the lead! Don’t take much else unless we go further in the car and will take water, towels etc

Warmhandscoldheart · 04/06/2020 11:44

I use a bum bag ☺️
Poo bags
Phone
Hand sanitiser
Tennis ball for distraction purposes
Treats
Keys
£3
Hard boiled sweets
Water bottle hung on bag by double clip

frankie001 · 05/06/2020 00:25

Phone, keys, poo bags, treats, water and bowl. All in a bag that I can carry my girl in if she gets too tired walking.

TimeWastingButFun · 05/06/2020 00:44

I've been thinking about this very thing this week! Ok in the winter, with coats and pockets, but in the summer with active wear or little sundresses I wondered where to put stuff, interested to hear the replies! Dog's Ok with poo bag dispenser on her harness but where to put keys and phone and now hand sanitiser??

HaveYouSeenMyBones · 05/06/2020 20:52

Just saw the newer replies - thanks everyone. I'll take a look on Etsy as suggested and now that someone else has mentioned a swiss army knife I feel the gate is open for me to add one to my bum bag Grin

Get a Swiss Army Classic SD keyring, OP! I swear by mine. Love it! It comes with a screwdriver. Grin

I carry my phone, poo bags, key of course. I'm basic. I use a bumbag if I don't have a coat (all of my coats have loads of pockets).

When I'm with the kids, I bring my rucksack with flasks of water, sandwiches, snacks. I'm using the rucksack a lot more during lockdown because the kids are always with doggo and me, which I love.

Monkeytapper · 05/06/2020 20:59

I have a ‘poo bag-bag’ from Bogg.
Fits poo bags, phone, treats and keys

I treated myself to a firedog bag that I carry all the essentials in and a bit of money for a coffee if i’m in the park. It lives with the lead on a hook and I just grab it when I head out.

TheVanguardSix · 05/06/2020 21:01

Awww look at your beautiful hound! Gorgeous!!! Mine's a vizsla cross (his dad's a vizsla, mum's a lab).

TARSCOUT · 05/06/2020 23:38

Dogs x 2
Poo bags
Keys

runningon · 06/06/2020 11:02

Phone (and headphones if I'm walking alone)
Lead
Roll of poo bags
Bottle of water & fold down bowl (only if a hot day or it's more than the usual 1 hour)
House keys
Dog treats - cheese/chicken etc (as her recall magically improves when I carry these)

igotsomething · 06/06/2020 11:17

Depending on the length of the walk really...for a couple of hours I'd take poo bags, treats, a squeaky toy, collapsible water bowl and water for the dog, and a drink for me.

Just a shorter walk up to an hour I'll take poo bags treats and a toy (to distract the pup when she's tempted to bugger off and play with other dogs for too long)

Nixee2231 · 06/06/2020 12:35

I'm very surprised how few people take a first aid kit on long walks! I thought it was common practice, and it really should be. If you go on 99 walks and don't need a kit, then you go on your 100th one and your dog gets a huge piece of glass stuck in his foot and is practically screaming and trying to bite anyone who gets near him like some sort of mad hellhound, you will wish you had a first aid kit (and a muzzle!), Trust me! Grin

sunnyeyes · 06/06/2020 14:41

Treats, poo bags, hand sanitizer, squeaky toy for distracting, water, I have a small over the shoulder bag
