What do you take on a walk?

I recently popped out for a dog walk, which ended up being longer than expected because it was so lovely. However, I'd left the house in leggings and a t-shirt so no pockets - I'd tied poo bags to the lead handle, shoved my phone in my bra and carried my keys. It was not ideal so I've started thinking about getting a little bag/bum bag with essentials in, for those kind of walks in the summer when I am not wearing a coat/pockets.

I just caught myself eyeing up swiss army knives and think I may have gone too far Grin

Bring me back into line. What would you take for a 1-2 hour walk, on a not-too-hot day, for a walk in the countryside?

Bottle of water, lightweight plastic dish so dog can have a drop of my cappuccino, and/or water , poo bags, ball, lead, money for a cappuccino at the beach shack, phone, tissue. And the dog.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/06/2020 22:14

Whistle
Treats
Poo bags
Keys
Phone
Penknife (force of habit)
Secateurs (to reopen overgrown footpaths or, today, clip elderflowers to make cordial)
Spare slip lead
Tennis ball
All in a bumbag except the whistle
I think there might be a plaster or two in there as well
I don't usually take water - I know where the pools and streams are

I also have in the car first aid kits (canine and human) and so much training kit that the rest of the family has regular bitch-fests about lack of space in the footwells.

awomancalledtrevor · 02/06/2020 22:31

In a small crossbody Kipling bag I carry
Poop bags

Small cross body bag /small rucksack on hot days
Water bottle for doggo with a rubber bit that flips out to drink from
Water bottle for me (tops up dog if it;s hot)
Poo bags

Wheresthebiffer2 · 03/06/2020 00:29

poo bags. That's all.

No key because I never lock the house (or car).
No phone because there's no reception where I walk/live.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 03/06/2020 00:32

There's a difference between 'a dog walk' and 'a walk', surely? The former mainly just needs the poo bags (I have a tiny shoulder bag with room for bags, tissues, keys, phone and not much else) whereas the latter can be anything up to a rucksack apiece full of picnic, drinks, waterproofs, first aid kit, sitting mats etc etc.

vanillandhoney · 03/06/2020 09:52

Poo bags, treats, keys, phone, ball.

HaveYouSeenMyBones · 03/06/2020 10:20

This is exactly my dilemma. 'A walk' of a few hours/miles would necessite a ruck sack with all the supplies for dog and human that you mention. That's definite. A short 30-60min or so walk in the fields near the house need poo bags and a lead. Sorted.

The inbetween is what I struggle with. The weekend morning walks, where we've driven a very few miles to a route that is off the beaten path but still near to home. Where we could be out for about an hour but, if the mood takes us, could be out for two because there is no rush to get home. We might be a couple of miles within a village or town but essentially on our own. It's THAT kind of walk where I found myself pocketless and with just a few poo bags and my phone shoved in my bra. We wanted to stay out longer but, in the end, we cut the walk short because it was a pita to carry my keys and lead for too long, because my phone is used as my O/S map and kept getting sweaty in my bra (ug!) and because it felt a bit foolish to be out for too long in such a state Grin

Hence me thinking I need a little bag of kit that I can grab on those kinds of walks...

I just realised I use the term "we" to mean me and the dog. I have become the mad dog lady...

Poo bags
Treats
Keys
Phone
Water and fold up bowl if it’s warm
On longer walks I take a back pack with a little first aid kit, hand san, snack, dog toy, tick remover.

SlothMama · 03/06/2020 10:33

My phone, poo bags, treats, headphones and whistle our walks always end up near water so I don't need to carry water. I have some lightweight trousers from H&M with big pockets to fit all of this, but I do want to get a cute bumbag to put stuff in.

Ooopsijustsnarted · 03/06/2020 10:33

When I walk the dog I take
Dd (10)
The box of poo bags (otherwise I leave them in my pocket and the go through the wash)
Ddogs long line lead (I know people hate them, but this is the only way ddog can have some freedom, he is awful off his lead with me, and unpredictable around other dogs, so if I see a dog I can reel him back in)
Ddogs short lead that he is on in the village.
We normally walk to water so he can have a drink and a paddle.

AriettyHomily · 03/06/2020 10:34

poo bags
keys
phone
banks card
water
honey, biscuits and glucometer for DDog

I have a cross body bag that is specifically my dog walking bag.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 03/06/2020 10:39

Primula / dog treats
Maybe a ball
Lead
Dog poo bags
In non COVID times some change for coffee
Phone
Keys

I'm the same op in the winter I have a coat with loads of pockets but the pockets reduce significantly in the summer so have w bum bag.

Recently though due to COVID
Literally just take primula and a phone and poo bags

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2020 11:43

Absolutely - a small bag (of whatever type you prefer) ready for intermediate walks. Add water (if it's hot) and go.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/06/2020 12:39

I take the same kit for virtually every walk as I sometimes don't know where I'm going till I'm in the car.

I forgot to add sunscreen to my list.

polkadotpjs · 03/06/2020 12:45

I'm on a borrowed dog, but water for both of us- noticed he will drink from a hand if really thirsty but we also take in a route where a lady puts out a water bowl, so he likes that as a stop on the way back.
I put water, poo bags, tin of treats- to shake to distract when he's getting fixated on bird/ other dog/ cat/ patch of grass with unsavoury stuff in it.
I'm talking like a dog owner already- can I be in your club?

HaveYouSeenMyBones · 03/06/2020 13:08

At the point you are waving about treat tins and cupping your hands into a dog bowl you are definately in the club polkadot Grin

Tick remover - great addition. I have to remove two of the little buggers at the weekend so having the tool with me would be great.

I have a bum bag, (the sweaty Betty one is a good size) have my phone, AirPods, keys and water if warm. If hot a small suncream too

OneNewName · 03/06/2020 14:34

What about something like this that could also double as a non dog walking bag?

Knowivedonewrong · 03/06/2020 15:05

I'm a dog walker so either use a bum bag or a small cross body bag.
Poo bags
Treats
Tissues
Antibac hand cleaner
Mini first aid kit
Phone

longtompot · 03/06/2020 15:29

I take poo bags, a tissue, my keys if dh isn't with me, lip balm, packet of mints, dog treats, my phone, and if it's a long walk and/or a hot day I'll bring some water and a collapsible silicone water bowl.

damnthatanxiety · 03/06/2020 15:32

Waist bag (small) with tissues (runnynose or incase I am caught short), small pawer bank for phone, phone, keys, water bottle, thin jacket that can be ties around my waist if I get hot. SO I am carrying my water bottle. EVerything else is in the waist bag.
