Took my dog to the vet this afternoon, left little dog with DH, he was working from home.
Got home and she's found a bottle of metacam and chewed through it, no idea how much she managed to eat but it was full and it's now empty. About 60 seconds after I got home I was out the door with the other dog and she's had an injection to make her sick and now she's on a drip. She'll be at the vet for 48 hours minimum. I'm so worried about her.

She only weighs 4kg. I know the risk is to her kidneys and I'm so thankful that she had no symptoms at all by the time she got to the vet.

I feel like the worst person in the world.

She has been really bright this morning apparently maybe that's code for acting likes a little shit but she's not being quiet which is a brilliant thing!

Our 5 month old pup learned to jump in the 2 seconds a back was turned and ate half a box of chocolate champagne truffles. Swift trip to the vet to make him puke and the little shit was totally unrepentant. Glad your pup is okay.

@Tikiboob hopefully you will be bringing them home today then!

So glad your pup seems to be okay!

Please don't feel bad, it can happen in the blink of an eye Flowers

Ok, I can beat that.

I was preparing dinner in the kitchen, the dog was hanging around getting under my feet begging for scraps etc

So I started playing around and jokingly pointed and made stabbing motions towards him with the knife, saying ‘if you’re not careful, I’ll stab ya’

And yes, you guessed it. He moved, I motioned and I slightly stabbed him.

He barely even noticed. I had a full on breakdown.

As a grown adult I had to remind myself never to play around with knives.

My MIL locked my partners dog in garage whilst she mowed the lawn, in the space of 15mins, she ate approx 30 slug pellets....
it was 7pm and we had to drive 60 miles to a specialist vet.
She was ok thankfully.
I hope your dog is ok, it happens. x

@Windyatthebeach our other dog ate an entire bowl of dough that was proofing and was sick under the table
In the livingroom, I cleaned it up it took bloody ages as it was all stuck to the carpet 🤢 and the bloody dog is staggering all over the shop, banging into shit. I thought he'd had a stroke.. so we went to the vet...

The yeast was fermenting in his stomach and he was drunk! He had to stay in for fluids and when I went to pick him up the next day he chewed the vets shoelace off as he was talking to me about what a cheeky chappy he'd been Hmm

She's staying in one more night for more fluids, the lady on the other end of the phone said the staff were all taking it in turns to give her a cuddle as she really wants them, she just snuggles in under your chin, but when she's in her crate she's very happy, but howls a lot.

So attention seeking drama queen! But her bloods were way off last night, and they're a lot lot better today. So I made the right call. I'm happy for her to stay as long as she needs

Vet described our younger cocker as 'very bright' at the drive in drop off appointment for their injections. Pretty sure she meant 'mental'!

We had a similar drama involving our older cocker and a mince pie. Suffice to say she did not learn her lesson and recently had the squits after stealing food from the toddler.

Back over 30 years ago chocolate wasn't a no no. Our Rotty regularly ate it.
And our collie cross who lived 20+years had a kit kat every day of the 18 +years we owned her!!
Imagine!!
Wonder if chocolate has changed that much or we were just very lucky?

LochJessMonster · 13/05/2020 20:17

Windyatthebeach I wonder that to, I have memories of throwing malteasers for our dogs to catch.

I still feed my dog chocolate, if I’m having some. He’s eaten a lot of chocolate over the years and never been ill. I reckon little and often builds up his tolerance so when he ate my whole advent calendar on the 2nd Dec Angry he was fine!

We recently had our ddog pts. She enjoyed a box of Maltesers her last few days! Never fussed about anything but if she heard that rattle!

Chocolate hasn't changed. A small amount of milk chocolate won't seriously harm a dog. There's hardly anything in a KitKat or some malteasers. Even an advent calendar doesn't have that much theobromine in it. A large bar of dark chocolate though is dangerous. Of course, it's size of dog dependent also. Easier to advise people not to give their dog chocolate at all than to allow them to work out the toxic dosage themselves and make accidental poisoning more likely.

Horehound · 13/05/2020 22:35

My dog ate a full tray of 80%cocoa chocolate brownies I had made and she was absolutely fine.
She also ate a chocolate cake and multiple chocolate advent calendars

She was fine every time. I think some dogs react badly and some are totally fine.
The thing she wasn't ok with was a salmon skeleton she got hold of.
And a haribo "pizza" she was very sad after that one. I guess because all the haribo swelled up in her tummy.
The worst one though, was when she ate a jellyfish in the beach then puked it up, then ate more of it again all sandy and pukey.
Then she was sick again and I had to take her home.

Only once did she have to have a stay in the vet and given a drip. No idea how.
Oh and when she was a puppy she ate a poisonous caterpillar and had to have some of her tongue and teeth removed....

At Christmas, we popped out for 90 minutes. Our very well-behaved dog decided that he fancied a huge fruit and nut toblerone that DH had put on a table. We came home and found the packaging laid out in a net, with a beautifully neat line all the way down the side, which had clearly been nibbled open (he's a huge GSD x Retriever but he's a very dainty eater).

The vet said that his vomit was spectacular - chocolate and foil galore.

Sparklfairy · 13/05/2020 22:38

Apparently if humans eat 50kg of chocolate in one sitting then it has the same toxic effects as a smallish amount in dogs.

There have been days during lockdown when I've considered this a challenge Grin

So glad she’s on the mend, she’s a beauty btw.

Years ago Beerydog2 appeared carrying a battery in her mouth, it looked slightly chewed. Rang everyone and anyone for advice, vets, vet nurses, random people. Consensus was make her sick until the vet can get there. Try mustard. Disguise it in bread/cheese etc.

Turns out Beerydog2 likes mustard. Neat. Off the spoon. The vomit-inducing drug didn’t work either. Dog remained fine. 13 years later, still eats everything. Still fine 🤦🏻‍♀️

My Westie got through a whole brand new bottle of Metacam. She was 11 months old at the time. Did as you have, got her on drip and she is now 13 years old and still going strong. Just recently she’s become a bit wee incontinent occasionally which I thought might be due to kidney damage, but HRT sorted her out, so I guess not!

Hope everything goes as well for your dog.

How's she doing @Tikiboob?

Report
Tikiboob · 14/05/2020 12:11

She needs another blood test today and it needs to be when she's starved but she ate quite a bit for tea last night so it can't be done just yet. She's very bright and cheerful today. Keeps crying for cuddles and the nurse said it was weird but she does love cuddles, she only stops the excited jumping around when she's being held. So I think she's feeling better!
