Puppy diarrhoea and no answers

I’m at a loss what to do. I’ve written about this before on here.
We got our puppy 6 weeks weeks ago. She’s now 23 week. Since we got her, she’s had loose stools. Breeder had her on raw chicken and royal canin.
At first, I tried to change her food (very slowly) to a few different things and nothing helped.
Vets tried panacur, didn’t help.
Vets did bloods to check pancreas and b12 levels, which were normal.
Stool sample showed cryptosporidium but this is self resolving and the vet didn’t didn’t it is what is causing symptoms and said there isn’t a treatment anyway.
Stool tested negative for Giardia but an antigen test came back positive for Giardia (so she’s had it at some point).
Tried a raw diet which seemed great for a few days and then back to the runs. It got very bad last week with pure dark green, foul spelling water-like poo. Back on panacur and metronidazole.
Hasn’t worked :(
I really don’t know what to do and of course our vet is now closed except for emergency cases.

Is there a vet on here who can offer any advice or has anyone else been through this? It’s causing so much stress and ruining our time with her. I’m having to clean her bum all day long and mopping the floor constantly.

Help!

@lw24wlml
That’s really crap Sad It’s so draining, really feel for you.
I called in the vet and got one of their pots because it came with a little scoop inside, but I doubt it matters.
What type of dog is it? Have you spoken to the breeder?

We have been lucky that she’s only pood inside a few times. Twice was in her crate. I scrubbed it with bleach and then put it in the washing machine with biological washing power. The next time wasn’t much, so I just put it in the washing machine but I dried it on hot temperature.

I went and bought a steam mop. I use a mop and bucket every day with dettol in, then steam mop afterwards. When she did poo all over the floor, I used bleach and then steam mopped.

Ours now poos on walks. I’ve stopped her going in the back garden. She did 1 poo out there a couple of days ago when she ran out and I poured bleach and water on it. Obviously I can’t do that in the streets.

Oh and I never let her poo on pavements incase she does still have Giardia and others catch it. Road only

One thing I would say about Chappie is that it produces lots of poo. My Patterdale terrier has a sensitive tummy ( not to the extent of your pup Asumpasty) and I have found it’s the only food he can tolerate but he does 3 big poos a day, almost Labrador size and he only weighs 12kg. However they are lovely and firm so I don’t care!

Iw24wImI · 29/03/2020 17:40

Crikey that's a lot of clean up and prevention.

Sadly we cant even walk 😔 because he is still not fully vaccinated and won't be for the foreseeable thanks to Covid19

Ansumpasty · 29/03/2020 18:10

@Molecule I could live with that!
I’m SICK of cleaning her. As she’s a Portuguese Water Dog, her hair is long and she does this annoying walk and poo thing. The slop is going all over her bum and back legs Angry

@lw24wlml
What type of puppy do you have?

OP posts:
Iw24wImI · 29/03/2020 18:55

@Ansumpasty

A cocker spaniel

Molecule · 29/03/2020 19:18

Oh you poor thing. We also have a Pomeranian and a furry bottom + runny poos is not a good combination. I’d clip her hair very short around her bottom and back legs if you’ve not already done so.

Ansumpasty · 29/03/2020 21:02

@Molecule My husband tried. Let’s just say, it didn’t go well Confused Typical that we can’t go to a groomers now!

I can sympathise....we have a v fluffy cat and it's been awful in the past when he has been unwell.

Rinsefirst · 30/03/2020 17:54

Nine weeks of very similar and nine visits to vet.
Puppy now 28 weeks
She’s on Hills Gastrointestinal Biome and vitamin B12 sprinkles
Took two weeks of eating the new dog food before it settled. Poos now about 6 a day instead of 26. Been better two weeks and different dog although still weighs just 9.3kg cocker spaniel

Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 18:18

Fuck this has given me anxiety! I had this with a kitten. It was hell and cost me so much money. I just could not help her and it made me ill dealing with it every day ( with stress) I agonised over this but eventually gave her back to the breeder. I just couldn’t deal with it any longer.

Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 18:19

It’s put me off ever having another animal. It broke my heart and made me feel like the shittest person.

Ansumpasty · 30/03/2020 20:23

@Goingfarawsy that’s horrible but I completely understand :( Cleaning up poo all day long is so bloody exhausting. I feel jealous every time I see other dog owners picking up normal poo.

@Rinsefirst is that the food that costs an absolute fortune? Is the stool now properly formed?

OP posts:
Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 20:27

We tried everything like you. All the probiotics, all the vets, all the different foods, the rice, the pumpkin EVERYTHING. Asked all the experts, asked on here. Phoned catteries for advice. Nothing worked. I sympathise with you so much.

Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 20:36

Just to add, the breeder said it could be the bleach / cleaning products. Of course when you have an animal shitting everywhere you are constantly cleaning and the breeder said it gets on their paws and ruins their gut! That just made me feel really guilty. Thought I should mention in case that might be a problem? Very hard not to use any cleaning products when you have an animal that you think has a bug though!

Rinsefirst · 30/03/2020 20:58

Food now costs £50 for 10kgs but first bag from vet was 1.5kg and whopping £19.
Vet had tried it out on a police dog who was ten days ahead of my dog in dodgy tummy front and it sorted that dog (a springer) in just six days. But we were 12 or so days before it worked so took longer. Then once her poos has been well formed we were to get 6 weeks of vitamin injections but we opted for them as sprinkles because of cv. Honestly, the misery of waiting ten mins for her to do six not happening dribble poos was awful for her and me. We got through 100 poo bags in about five days.
Stools are fully formed mostly but frequently does two at a time. Not eating them now either. Grin

Rinsefirst · 30/03/2020 21:01

@Goingfarawsy Huge sympathies to you. I understand entirely

Ansumpasty · 30/03/2020 22:31

@Goingfarawsy

We have also tried all the probiotics and I too have called around local kennels to ask what they use. Just waiting for someone or something to be the magic answer!

That’s interesting about the cleaning products. I wonder if it could be that. I’m scared to use natural products incase whatever she has is contagious.

@Rinsefirst what’s the b12 for? She’s had blood tests done and her b12 levels were checked (I didn’t ask why, I guess it can lead to the runs) and they were good.
I’ve ordered more stool firming pills and more probiotics and am picking up so lactose free kefir tomorrow.

My husband is home at the moment (he works abroad) so at least someone else to help me wash her daily but I’m already dreading him leaving. It was so much for me alone with the kids to be cleaning up poo and washing her all day long Sad

OP posts:
Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 22:40

Yes I was scared in case it was contagious too! Whole thing was a nightmare. Before I got the kitten I naively thought if an animal gets sick then the vets would fix them. I felt really frustrated and let down that the vets were so blasé about it and didn’t seem to know how to help.

After we got rid of the cat me and my son got a bit ill and I now have digestion issues that I never had before. Could have been the stress. Could have been coincidence but I also wonder if it was the cat. Her poo was very yellow and c. Diff type smell and that’s what happened to us. 🤢

Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 22:44

Kefir made it much worse for the kitten. The probiotics would work for a cpl of days then stop working. The chicken and rice kind of worked but I was so scared about her health and keeping her on it for more than a week.

The poor thing was starving all the time so it was impossible to keep her off the surfaces because she was just crazy for food but it all made her so sick.

Ansumpasty · 30/03/2020 22:58

Same! She’s starving and now has to wear a muzzle if she’s ever off her lead as will eat dog poo or literally ANYTHING she can find. She will be standing there scraping the moss out from the paving stones in front of the house while I’m getting my key out.
I will skip the kefir, then. The idea of something making it worse isn’t worth it.

That’s horrid about your tummy. I keep thinking that. My husband vomited today out of nowhere and all I could think of was what he could have caught off her. I even sprayed her lead down with dettol incase there were poo germs on it.

OP posts:
Rinsefirst · 30/03/2020 23:27

We started out with Metrobactin and vetpro digestive function and panacur then got an injection. Then more panacur and then the cytomen injection and a yellow pill called sulphasalazine. With famotidine and now protexin cobalaplex.

I think the B12 helps absorb her food but only gets given when her poos start to form.
It has definitely helped her. For a month she put on no weight. And in the middle of all that I had a prisoner self isolating in my attic after returning from northern Italy. All very stressful

Goingfarawsy · 30/03/2020 23:51

Looking back now, I’d urge anyone who brings a pet home that gets sick straight away to take them back to the breeder and tell them you will have them back when they are better but the problem is you don’t know it’s not just a blip in the beginning, you think it will clear up.. and then you fall in love 🙄

Ansumpasty · 31/03/2020 08:14

@Rinsefirst goodness me! Did you know the person in your attack or did they just break in!?

@Goingfarawsy
That’s the thing, I thought it was just her settling in at first. I called the breeder and she said it was normal for puppies and people assured me that their dog had an upset tummy while they settled in.

Has anyone tried the Purina pro plan hypoallergenic food?
