Puppy not allowed to have second set of jabs - can we get around this?

Hi, any vets out there who can help?

Our puppy was due to have his second set of jabs this week and we were desperate to take him for a walk and let him explore the garden. But now the vets are only doing emergency appointments and it seems there is no way he can have them.

If we got him a muzzle and some dog shoes, and kept him away from other dogs, would that enable us to take him for short walks? We intend to section off the paved area in the garden and clean it so he can stretch his legs.

I know this is nothing in the greater scheme of things, and we are so lucky if this is our only problem, but it has made us a bit sad for him. Poor little pup.

Sort the garden out so foxes can't get in for now. Clear the current fox poo and then let your pup go crazy in the garden.

Your puppy isn't desperate to go for a walk. It doesn't even know what a walk is.

Hey, thanks everyone. We have been walking him his bag Grin and he struggles to get our - he’s so excited to explore! But yes we will stick to the garden for now, clear it up and sort it out.

I just called the vet to check our puppy can still have his second jab tomorrow. They said because there's only a small window of time in which they can have them they are still honouring those appointments.

Due to collect our puppy on 2nd April. Been told it all depends on the vets and chipping and jabs. Actually crying over it. She will be a therapy dog for our kids. We are all set up ready to go. Been on a waiting list forever to get her. I know it can't be helped but this was the one thing keeping us smiling. At least we would have had a distraction.

Have you called around local vets, supadupa? The vet we visited yesterday said is still doing puppies’ vaccinations. You might have one near you?

going to wait to see what the breeder says. If it's a no I'm pretty sure she will be ringing everywhere she can think of. Kennel Club still not saying what to do in these circumstances.... awaiting advice from DEFRA

You won't be able to collect the puppy anyway with lockdown in place.

She's local and will deliver, just as other businesses will deliver. We can keep distances etc. She's NHS too so is very vigilant

@supadupapupascupa but this isn’t a business.
KC HAVE been clear. New puppy owners can’t collect or even visit pups during lockdown.
And if the breeder sees themselves as a business or tries to get round this then FFS walk away. Angry

Gah it was my assumption. She's a superb breeder I guess I won't be getting my pup then.

KC aren't the law? What do DEFRA say?

Report
supadupapupascupa · 29/03/2020 19:06

KC are waiting to hear from them. This pup won't be registered I wonder if it makes any difference at all

This does say that if the lockdown goes beyond three weeks they may revisit their advice with regards to vaccinations

My vet said because my pup has already had the 1st set that they will continue with the second lot in 2 weeks time. She said they will give her the kennel cough when the gov guidance changes.

@supadupapupascupa a superb breeder who doesn’t register their pups with the KC? I don’t think so. Time to rethink.

Any vets still doing vaccinations are breaking all the current, very clear guidelines. The BVA and RCVS have made it abundantly clear human life come first hence the no routine appointments rule. They are putting ££ before the health of their staff and their families and wider society.

The Royal College and the British Veterinary Association have been crystal clear that during the initial three week lockdown period they do not want vets seeing anything other than emergencies, and routine vaccination does not count. Any vet who continues to perform vaccinations in the face of a public health emergency is bringing the profession into disrepute. The only exception is in the face of a disease outbreak, or in some shelter situations where the risk of parvo is very high. This guidance will be regularly reviewed if the period of restrictions continues.
Your garden to toilet train is fine, taking the pup out 'in arms' for your daily exercise to have a look at the world is fine. You should not be anywhere near a dog from another household at the moment anyway.

Wolfiefan yes she is. This litter was born sadly just before the required 12 month gap required for registration. 5 stars from the council and long waiting lists. She is a lovely caring woman. These things happen sometimes

To be fair I looked at the pages on this from the bva and their examples and it does say Vaccinations (unless due second vaccine of primary course in next 3 weeks) and also Vaccinations (unless in a shelter situation, or in case of disease outbreak) so there might be cases that are perfectly justified.

I 'd also suggest that anyone with a puppy at this time gives some serious thought to how best to socialise them during what looks likely to be a prolonged lockdown and also how to prevent them developing seperation anxiety if they have company all the time at the moment - there are going to be some unforseen consequences of all this with a generation of neurotic dogs.

Wolfiefan · 30/03/2020 08:38

No. No they don’t. She’s at best a commercial breeder or at worst a puppy farmer. 5 stars from the council? For what? They know bugger all about dog breeding. And long waiting lists? Which she is churning out puppies to cash in on?
Superb breeders may not have waiting lists.
They breed selectively and not all that frequently.
Think again.

Long waiting lists because she DOESNT churn them out. Please don't judge you don't know her
