New neighbours moved in on thursday at the side of us. Havent seen them but seen their dog in a cage through the window. Now dog has been crying and howling since friday morning constantly I can see hes still in the cage. Cant see any water or food. Theres no one home. A different neighbor tried knocking last night and this morning. Its loud enough to be heard a few houses up. Poor thing sounds so frightened.

What can I do If anything? Should I do something?

“Can't be arsed to train a dog but don't want it being a nuisance? Stick it in a cage. Want a dog but work full time? Stick it in a cage. And so on. I know being locked in a house or room is not great - but a cage? Come on. It's barbaric.”

Do you really think people who are misusing crates would miraculously be better owners without crates or not get dogs? If crates disappeared tomorrow those dogs wouldn’t suddenly be getting trained or looked after while they’re at work or left with the run of the house... they’d be in bathrooms, sheds, cupboards under stairs... that extra foot of space makes no difference to how barbaric it is.

They’d just chain them outside instead.

@tabulahrasa

Yes, there have always been - and undoubtedly always will be - vile, cruel dog owners.

The thing is, there are also stupid dog owners who want a nice cute puppy but don't want to have to train or exercise it. People who work full time who might baulk at coming home to a house chewed up out of boredom, but who will tell themselves and their friends that the sad creature they come home to every day is just fine.

Dog ownership has increased massively over the last few decades - along with puppy farming and back street breeding to meet the demand. You see posts on here regularly from people planning to get a dog even though they work full time. It's like it's their god-given right and, because they know loads of people who leave their dogs all day - it must be okay 🙄. For those people (ie the stupid rather than the cruel) the availability of cages just makes it easier for them. If the choice was to exercise, socialise, train etc OR be out all day and come back to a wrecked house, people may think twice before getting a dog. But cages must be okay because so many people use them and you can buy them from Pets at Home.

I read on here of people toilet training their puppies by putting them in a small cage to deter them from soiling it. We took on an 11 week old puppy from someone last year who just hadn't realised what hard work he would be and was about to dump him on a rescue. First couple of weeks DH and alternated sleeping on a mattress by the patio doors so as soon as (uncaged) puppy woke, we could dash out into the garden with him. But I guess that's just too much effort for some people.

This owner sounds vile and I’m disgusted as I’ve said in previous posts.

However we’ve had 2 rescue puppies, now older but we did use a crate at night for them. We got up every few hours to let them out for loo breaks. They slept better in a crate and actually got in it themselves at around 10pm within a week of having them. We took them both to puppy training classes and they were not really left for any longer than an hour until they were older, even now they’re not left much. Even though we used a crate, we’re very responsible dog owners and the dogs are the centre of our world.

You’d think so... but, given they’re already choosing to get a dog knowing full well no-one is looking after it all day, these are not people overburdened with common sense...

I'd love a dog I'm home all day but with 3 kids and two cats I think I have enough so it's on hold untill kids are possibly teens and the cats have moved on.

In the meantime op, it's good to know that there are people like you who won't turn a blind eye to animal neglect and cruelty. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to try and help Thanks

I'm sure you'll make a great dog owner when the time comes. I hope you'll consider a second hand dog - I'd recommend these people -
