Are you the sort of dog owner who takes your dog everywhere?

I am. 😂

Partly because my work/life mean that I can and partly because he gets anxious when left alone.

For example: if you were going for lunch and the place you were going to was dog friendly; would you be most likely to take your dog or most likely to leave them at home? Is this due to them (their size/behaviour) or due to your personal preference?

No because then it becomes all about him. What’s he doing, whats around him etc

I like a bit of me time!

FFSFFSFFS · 04/03/2020 18:40

@Halfcharged took my pup until he was about two and half. I thought he was never going to chill out when we were out - he got sooooooooo overexcited.

Now he'll happily snore away - although I do always make sure just to check he''s not too overwhelmed if its crowded etc.

I think the key is lots of careful exposure - pulling him out if he gets stressed. A good settle command. And taking a blanket for him which you put on the floor an the knows is his chill out spot no matter where you are. I put a lot of effort (and stress!) trying to nail this with my boy an ultimately it has made my life easier because I don't have to worry about taking him if I have to.

He now comes to the hairdressers with me for my epic colour appointments. I never EVER thought that would happen!

Showerpuff · 04/03/2020 18:48

Thankyou, that’s reassuring to know! I can’t ever imagine it at the minute but it’s obviously not something that happens quickly.

How did you train the settle command?

FFSFFSFFS · 04/03/2020 18:51

Treats. More treats. And then a few more treats.

CherryPavlova · 04/03/2020 18:52

My husband tries to. The dog goes most places and our accommodation choices when we go away have changed to include the dog.
We leave him in his crate sometimes, but not for long. He goes to daycare if we’re both working.

bloodywhitecat · 04/03/2020 18:54

Yes, if I can I do. He is still very young (6 months) but we take him wherever we can as he's a member of the family too.

adaline · 04/03/2020 22:47

Yeah, mine comes everywhere pretty much! I'm a dog walker so he comes to work with me everyday, and out to lunch or on days out with us at weekends.

He really does have a great life Grin

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 04/03/2020 23:01

No because we have ended up with three - we looked after my mum's when she became ill and he isn't going to be able to back to her.

But before that we drove nearly 30 miles to a pub that we had discovered was dog friendly and took our two out for lunch! It was a novelty for all four of us. Husband's dog is huge, friendly and reasonably well trained. Mine is small and hates people. He was fine in the pub as he was ignored but in a smaller dog friendly cafe he would probably get stressed by attention from strangers so we haven't tried that yet.

SMarie123 · 04/03/2020 23:22

I live in Ireland and hardly anywhere allows dogs in. ☹️ very annoying especially given that he is definitely less disruptive than my children 😉

Girlintheframe · 05/03/2020 05:51

Ours comes everywhere we can take him. Sadly not to work but if I'm going to friends house/out for lunch he will most definitely come along.

Lllot5 · 05/03/2020 06:00

Some mad woman brought her dog to a wedding I was at last summer.

Ohffs66 · 05/03/2020 06:09

itadakimas me too. I would love to take Ddog everywhere with me but she is also very reactive and nervous, and busy places, traffic, other dogs all stress her out, and she will kick off or just pace about anxiously so it's no fun for anyone, especially her. My dream would be to take her to the pub and have her just relax under the table but that's never gonna happen sadly.

She's much happier at home with her lickimat and kong wobbler when we go anywhere. It's very restrictive isn't it?

That said she is very very well behaved when she's not reacting so if she didn't have issues she'd be perfect to take along everywhere

RedRed9 · 05/03/2020 07:43

@Lllot5 how did the dog do at the wedding? Did she pre arrange for it to be there?

OP posts:
Lllot5 · 05/03/2020 08:26

I don’t know if it was pre arranged but she takes it everywhere cuddling it like baby.
The navy blue neck tie to match the bridesmaids was a highlight.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/03/2020 08:28

I take mine everywhere I can. He, and I, would rather he was with me than at home, and he is well behaved so I will deliberately pick dog friendly cafes for lunch, etc

bluetongue · 05/03/2020 09:10

I’d love to take my boy more places but I’m pretty restricted where I live (Australia). No dogs allowed on public transport and only allowed at outdoor dining areas.

He’s actually pretty well behaved and loves outings. He’d love an English dog friendly pub with an open fireplace in winter Smile

Yokohamajojo · 05/03/2020 09:15

A bit of both, for instance we take him camping and often to our local dog friendly pub and other outings. Both my kids play football and unfortunately most places don't allow dogs so he'll have to stay at home during matches and training. He's happy at home though so don't feel too bad

Witchonastick · 05/03/2020 09:38

@SMarie123 I was surprised by how dog unfriendly Ireland was when I visited for the first time. Coming from rural England, you just assume most pubs etc are dog friendly.
Especially in more rural areas.

I take my dog everywhere I can. He’s huge and still very young, but I can usually trust him to behave.
I do think the more you do with them when they’re young, the more you can do. They just take it in their stride.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/03/2020 09:49

Mine is a Chihuahua with an attitude problem so I dont take him to public eateries Grin

couchlover · 05/03/2020 12:59

I should start out by saying I'm not a dog lover so this probably colours my views but Dogs or any animal do not belong in an establishment that serves food or drink. It really puts me off when I go somewhere and there are dogs inside.

Bubblysqueak · 05/03/2020 13:42

We don't as dog is huge and can't fit under tables etc. We did take him away with us last year and found it awkward eating out as he took up so much room.

adaline · 05/03/2020 14:01

Oh well. Then you can go to the thousands of places that don't allow dogs then.

LargeGinOnTap · 05/03/2020 14:03

I take my very small dog everywhere. Because she is so adaptable and fuss free. Last dog was a nightmare in cafes etc so didn't take him.

BarkandCheese · 05/03/2020 14:14

I take her to cafes and pubs as part of a dog walk, but wouldn’t take her if I was going out for lunch. She does like to stay under the table and wants to sit on my lap, begs food (which is my fault as I got into the habit of sharing my bacon roll at the park with her) and generally doesn’t make for a relaxed meal. She also tends to cause a mild sensation everywhere she goes because she’s incredibly tiny, insanely fluffy and impossibly cute. People constantly want to pet her and talk to me about her, which I don’t generally mind at all, but again I’d rather eat in peace.

adaline · 05/03/2020 14:28

Ours came out with us from the moment he could, basically. As soon as he'd had his jabs, we took him to dog-friendly cafes and restaurants and pubs. He's two now and will just settle down under the table.
