Will my puppy ever stop following me round?

9 week old cockerpoo. She sleeps at night really well in a crate and happily goes in.

But in the day, she wants to be on a lap, or follows around. She’ll occasionally take a chew toy off to her bed. But try with a baby gate into kitchen and whining and barking. Wong be in a play pen or crate in the day....

She is a baby who has just lost her mummy and every security she has ever known. Of course she needs to be close to someone.

flyingfoxes · 10/02/2020 21:42

In the time it took me to read this thread, my 18 month old dog sleeping next to me raised his head to look at me twice to make sure I'm not going to get up and go somewhere else. My 10 year old dog is on the chair nearby. As soon as I get up to change over the laundry they'll both follow. 😂 They're pack animals. It's what they do.

nevernotstruggling · 10/02/2020 21:44

My 5 year old cocker doesn't leave my side. If anything he's much more clingy now than when he was a puppy. He's asleep in his basket at the end of my bed Grin

kitk · 10/02/2020 21:49

Erm well my brother has a pure breed cocker spaniel who still needs laps and cuddles and she's 9?

Whynosnowyet · 10/02/2020 21:57

Our dpuppy needs constant supervision as other ddogs aren't being exactly welcoming just yet...

DecemberSnow · 10/02/2020 22:01

What kind of chew are you giving her?

Sarahlou63 · 10/02/2020 22:01

9 weeks. Puppies that age sleep for 14-16 hours a day. If you're not prepared to be an active pet owner for 8-10 hours a day you should not have a dog.

DrivingMsCrazy · 10/02/2020 22:07

Ffs of course she's going to be following you - she's 9 weeks old !! Did you do ANY research into puppy behaviour and settling them in after leaving their Mum? Hmm

bigreputation · 10/02/2020 22:07

It's completely normal at this stage and it will settle down but how much depends on the dog. Mine don't follow me everywhere but one wants to be close to one of us. If I'm poorly in bed, she's asleep on the floor, if I'm working at home, she's at my feet.

She just likes to be close to us.

Girlintheframe · 11/02/2020 07:41

Hate to break it to you Op but mine didn't stop following me constantly until he was 6 months old and even now he is 19 months he still follows me 75% of the time. As he's got older though he is patient to wait for me (when I answer the door/go to the loo etc) without crying/whining. Tbh I think it's a combination of his generally doggy neediness/curiosity and personality.

Eckhart · 11/02/2020 07:44

@Whynosnowyet 'dpuppy'! So cute! Started my day with a smile :)

glittercandle · 11/02/2020 07:51

My 2 year old cockapoo follows me everywhere, it’s the nature of the breed. She can be left at home alone for up to 4 hours though we don’t do that very often.

Spidey66 · 11/02/2020 07:57

Maggie is a year old and still follows us around. We can't even have a wee in peace. It's what they do.

MartyrGuacamole · 11/02/2020 09:06

My 18mo St. Bernard cross still follows me, even to the bathroom! He is also happy to go in his bed while we go out though. 9 weeks is such a baby, they've just left mum and littermates, no wonder they want to follow you all the time.

Hotitalian65 · 11/02/2020 09:25

Labs don't have eyes and ears, they have food detectors :-)

Whynosnowyet · 11/02/2020 10:01

Eckhart I give you Gabriella Boomer..

TokyoSushi · 11/02/2020 10:05

Our Sproodle is 7 months old, follows us absolutely everywhere, the labrador in him means that there is always the possibility that there might be food - and he can't miss that!

TokyoSushi · 11/02/2020 10:05

If we're doing dog photos...

shinynewapple2020 · 11/02/2020 12:22

My dog (Jack Russell) is 3 and although he's absolutely fine to be left alone for quite a few hours when we're at work, when we're at home he will always follow us around and he hates it if we have a visitor and he's shut into a different room.

We had him as a 9 week old puppy and for the first 2 weeks we didn't leave him alone apart from when we settled him down for his nap where he was shut in the kitchen. I think we then started popping out for an hour when he was asleep, or just not going to him straight away when we heard him wake. Really just preparing him for the fact that he would have to be left for a few hours when our work patterns meant there was no-one home.

SittingInMustard · 11/02/2020 14:59

All of our dogs will happily go off to a different part of the house IF they trust you are sat down and not going anywhere soon.

However, if you're moving then so are they. Right behind you to see if anything fun or tasty is gonna happen Grin

GertrudeCB · 11/02/2020 15:04

My lab is 5, fine on his own in the house but follows me and / or DH around. Oh and he likes to sit on our laps ( he weighs 7 st Grin)

ladybee28 · 11/02/2020 15:04

This.

heatseeker14 · 11/02/2020 15:21

Ladybee28, so true! 😂
Our pup is 6.5 months old and loves to be wherever we are in the house. I sometimes feel sorry for him because he can’t switch off and rest. I was worried about stepping on him when he was very small because he practically glued to my feet. I would be a bit upset if he stopped doing it now. Would think he stopped caring about me. 😂

inwood · 11/02/2020 15:23

She's a baby, of course she going to follow you everywhere!

BossAssBitch · 11/02/2020 15:36

@nicky7654
Seriously your pup is 9 weeks! Why did you have a pup? You obviously don't care very much for the poor thing!!! Unbelievable!!!!!

This sort of arsehole response is why I rarely come to the DogHouse for advice. It's full of angry, aggressive knobbers.

And why all the '!!!!!!!'

CALM THE FUCK DOWN Grin
