Will my puppy ever stop following me round?

9 week old cockerpoo. She sleeps at night really well in a crate and happily goes in.

But in the day, she wants to be on a lap, or follows around. She’ll occasionally take a chew toy off to her bed. But try with a baby gate into kitchen and whining and barking. Wong be in a play pen or crate in the day....

I have been followed round by a dog for the last 20 years of my life (not the same one for the whole 20 years). Vizslas aren't called the 'original Velcro dogs' for nothing!

The current one sits on my lap when we go to the coffee shop on our walks, and circles round my legs if I'm cooking. She also leans on me if I'm stood up.

My 10 year old dog still follows me around tbh. At the very least he likes to be on the same floor of the house as me.

A friend who got a puppy at the same time as I did said to me that her husband used to say "where's your boyfriend?" if the dog wasn't right behind her.

He is fine if I leave the house though - sits on the sofa looking out waiting for me to come back.

I have accepted that no-one, not my lovely husband, not my 3 lovely children, will ever love me as much as my dog :)

9 weeks is still tiny but you can help encourage the puppy to settle in the crate for a bit. A bit like with babies look for cues their tired and pop them in the crate and just hang around close enough that they can see you.

Don't worry OP, you might be worrying about puppy following you around at the moment, give it a few weeks, it's when they don't follow you, you really panic

That is so true Grin

My nearly 14 yo Labrador even follows me in to the toilet Grin. I think he follows me everywhere just on the off chance I might be getting him some more food tbh. He’s a very hopeful optimistic kind of a dog.

Don't worry OP, you might be worrying about puppy following you around at the moment, give it a few weeks, it's when they don't follow you, you really panic, then you know they're up to something truly mischievous/disgusting/destructive. Enjoy this cute little bonding stage, it doesn't last long! X

Most dogs follow their owner around. Mine still does at almost two years old. My mother’s dog as well at 13 years old!

My 11 year old whippador follows me around when I'm home - especially when I'm in the kitchen ( greedy ! ) but also when I go to the loo or have a shower/bath .

My dog followed me around constantly and still does actually, unless hes really tired. But through gradual increase and training as he grew up, I can leave him for 8 hours without any separation anxiety. Leaving the house is different, and the puppy will accept this.
However, at the moment she is just a baby, a bit overwhelmed and never been left alone before.

Give her a bit of time to settle in, then start the training.
Place her one side of the baby gate, with her bed and a chew etc.
Sit the other side of the gate, right up against the gate. Watch tv/read a book etc. Minimal interaction with her.

Then you want to sit in sight of the gate but not directly touching it
Then sit a bit further away
Then start doing some housework etc in that room, so you are moving around in and out of sight continuously.
Then leave the room briefly, back in the room.

Each time, minimal interaction with her.
To start with she will probably watch you like a hawk and be up and down every time you move. The aim for each stage is to get her settle down, not whining or fussing.

How long you need to work on each stage depends on the individual dog but don't rush to the next stage. And don't spend hours and hours each time. Once she has settled down for about 10-20minutes, you can say good girl and go in an say hello.

Any time I've had just one dog, I've had a shadow. My current shadow is 15 and on his last legs and I really wish he'd stay comfortable where he is instead of heaving himself up just to accompany me to the kettle and back, but that's just what they do.

I'm sure your puppy will find her confidence as she grows up and gets used to life without her mum and siblings, but it's normal for her to want to be with you. You're her pack now.

Seriously your pup is 9 weeks! Why did you have a pup? You obviously don't care very much for the poor thing!!! Unbelievable!!!!!

This sort of arsehole response is why I rarely come to the DogHouse for advice. It's full of angry, aggressive knobbers.

And why all the '!!!!!!!'

CALM THE FUCK DOWN Grin

Ladybee28, so true! 😂
Our pup is 6.5 months old and loves to be wherever we are in the house. I sometimes feel sorry for him because he can’t switch off and rest. I was worried about stepping on him when he was very small because he practically glued to my feet. I would be a bit upset if he stopped doing it now. Would think he stopped caring about me. 😂

All of our dogs will happily go off to a different part of the house IF they trust you are sat down and not going anywhere soon.

However, if you're moving then so are they. Right behind you to see if anything fun or tasty is gonna happen Grin

My dog (Jack Russell) is 3 and although he's absolutely fine to be left alone for quite a few hours when we're at work, when we're at home he will always follow us around and he hates it if we have a visitor and he's shut into a different room.

We had him as a 9 week old puppy and for the first 2 weeks we didn't leave him alone apart from when we settled him down for his nap where he was shut in the kitchen. I think we then started popping out for an hour when he was asleep, or just not going to him straight away when we heard him wake. Really just preparing him for the fact that he would have to be left for a few hours when our work patterns meant there was no-one home.

Our Sproodle is 7 months old, follows us absolutely everywhere, the labrador in him means that there is always the possibility that there might be food - and he can't miss that!
