Devastated rehomed dogs yesterday

As title says I am devastated. I rehomed my 2 dogs to blue cross yesterday, I can barely breathe and cant stop crying, I have had them since they were puppies and they are ages 6 and 7.

I signed them over and asked if blue cross could just send a message they are ok and if rehomed lady said no. I said I dont want details of family just that they are ok.

My circumstances have changed drastically. When I got my dogs I had a very different life, my daughter was late teens and they were like children to me. Life has changed I am ill now and became unable to walk them, financial circumstances changed also, lost home then moved to a council flat with a lot of stairs in which I can barely go up and down due to pain. The council due to my illness found a new ground floor property for me, and no pets allowed. So my dogs are now with Blue Cross and I can barely cope today. They must be so confused.

Really what Im saying is has anyone gone through this before? How did you cope?

Oh, so very sorry that you've had to do this. I can barely imagine the heartbreak. We adopted our dog from a rescue last year after his owners had to give him up due to serious illness in the family and we adore him. We were very, very thoroughly homechecked beforehand and the rescue have been in touch several times to check up on him, and have passed on a message and photos to his old owner, but I know not all rescues will do this. It does seem mean that they wouldn't even drop you a quick email to let you know when they go to their new home, but Blue Cross are a very reputable rescue and they will do right by them.

Thanks spiderlight.

I am tormenting myself checking the Blue Cross website, at dogs available to rehome, and their pictures aren't up yet, so really worried

this is so hard on you and thinking of you so much. Sometimes details take a while as I think they get to know the dogs to be able to give more detail on them . Please put yourself first and keep busy and distracted while it’s this hard as they will adjust and this bit is the worst time for you or them as it’s a huge change but it won’t stay this awful , and recovery will come.
I just wish they have the ability to keep you in touch even by email as it would make such a difference to you to know they are ok once settled

LooseleafTea · 12/02/2020 21:00

Also it is so obvious how deeply they have been loved and cared for by you , which will really stay with them and help them in their future

Can you get a friend to go down and see the dogs. Then go back in a couple of weeks and if they're not there, ask about them. They'll probably tell your friend they've been rehomed now, so then you'll know they've found their new home.

Such a terrible story 😢
I work with many rescues and turned my last home into a dog sanctuary.
Is there anything I can do? I live in Putney.

Annieberrie · 17/02/2020 23:59

Ty so much fizz, unfortunately they are in Yorkshire

Hi OP, they may not reach the website as they may have been rehomed without needing to be advertised. I think some rescues have a list of approved people looking to provide homes and they may have found a fit that works for your dogs without needing to advertise.

amazedmummy · 21/02/2020 15:09

Completely agree with @peoplepleaser1 my wee girl (cat) never made it to the website. I'd been in touch and as soon as she was ready to rehome I got the call.

TheShepherdsCrown · 21/02/2020 19:12

You did your best for your dogs. Its heartbreaking but sometimes circumstances change so much. Please don’t blame yourself. And the Blue Cross is excellent at homing. They do ensure the animals are rehomed to people who are assessed so it’s a good match.

Annieberrie · 21/02/2020 23:03

Thats reassuring as I look daily at the website for them, and still no sign.
