Recently got a frenchie- worried by everything I am reading!? Advice

We recently got a frenchie, DS is 7 now and would enjoy the company and it’s a dog we’ve all looked at and thought would be a good fit for the family. I had read up on websites beforehand and spoke to people who have them.

People had warned me about the stubbornness and destructiveness but said they are good with kids and are generally a good breed to have.

However, I’ve been on forums and all I seem to read from frenchie owners is how much they chew, they can get separation anxiety and their allergies and diet! And how poorly they get! The people who I speak to had never mentioned that there’s was ever poorly or destructive. I feel duped Hmm

Any advice? I feel like I have puppy blues and can’t seem to shake the feeling like I’ve made a huge mistake.

I’m worried that because we both work full time that he may get anxiety and might misbehave. However, we sometimes work from home and there is people to let him out on occasions. I also worry that he will chew everything in sight and am stressed that he may be an ill frenchie who sees the vets regularly and worry about the cost of keeping him healthy!! I never realised that their insurance premiums would be so high... we’re getting insurance but can only afford a certain amount so am worried I case something big happens!

I can’t shake the worry! Any positive frenchie parents out there!!

I can’t believe that you didn’t know that dogs can’t be left for hours at a time Confused completely irresponsible. Poor pup.Angry

MoaningMinniee · 06/10/2019 13:18

Please tell us you're using all your annual leave between you to help settle this poor pup before going back to work full time and using dog walkers/day care.

Sooverthemill · 06/10/2019 13:25

OP you're going to get flamed. You didn't do the research properly before you chose the puppy. You didn't understand that puppies and young dogs cannot be left for such a long time. Older dogs also need company. Insurance is an essential for dogs and with a breed with known health problems like yours the premiums will be high because the risk is high that the dog will cost a lot in vet bills ( I know of a pug who had 6 operations before she was 3). I honestly think you should ask the breeder to take the puppy back, all reputable breeders will do this.

Willow2017 · 06/10/2019 13:54

Looks like you did sod all research on actual breed or how to.care for a puppy.
Frenchies are notorious for their overbred health problems. One look at their face tells you it's not normal (along with other dogs which have been bred beyond recognition from the original all to make them look 'cute' at the expense of their health)

How on earth do you think it's ok to.leave a puppy for 8hrs on its own? When will it be socialised trained, have attention? Having someone come in if and when they can fit it in is not good enough.
Poor dog will be completely stressed and feel abandoned. Can't imagine the behaviour issues you will be starting up by your ignoring that this is a baby, needs contact and stimulation and training not as something you only consider interacting with when you are actually at home.

Why on earth didn't you factor insurance, regular jabs, neutering into your costs when considering buying a dog?

Do the pup a favour and take it back.

WheelDecide · 06/10/2019 14:00

Dear God.

Costacoffeeplease · 06/10/2019 14:37

This is a joke right?

juliainthedeepwater · 06/10/2019 14:42

This breaks my heart. Leaving a dog, let alone a puppy, that long alone is abusive. They are living creatures, not playthings. You will be their entire life and they deserve so much more.

macmustard · 06/10/2019 14:43

Any dog could get separation anxiety and become destructive being left 8 hours a day. It will be lonely and lack stimulation. The loneliness will be awful.

Veterinari · 06/10/2019 14:48

I’m going to assume this is a GF but in the offchance not...
@Darklava09
Frenchies retail for up to around 3k if you’re paying a decent breeder. I assume that if you've Invested 3k in a puppy you can afford daycare and insurance.

If you didn’t spend that much and if the breeder was happy to hand over a pup to a household where he’d be alone for 8 hrs a day then i’d Suggest you invest in insurance as your pup is likely to be a health-problem nightmare sold to someone with no ability to google

BuckingFrolics · 06/10/2019 14:51

Words fail me.

The OP should not have a dog imo.

saywhatwhatnow · 06/10/2019 14:54

OP you need to get a dog walker or doggy daycare. You can't leave a puppy for 8 hours a day! It may well develop separation anxiety and be destructive if you don't. Why did you want a dog in the first place?

joystir59 · 06/10/2019 14:57

Are you expecting him to hold his pee for 8 hours?

Kellsbells67 · 06/10/2019 16:45

Aww hun... Dosent sound like you have the time, patience, or mental state to have a doggy. Why not get a cat, or a hamster? Every person I know who has had a dog / puppy and worked full time... They gave it up around 6 months. Every person I know 🙈😂😂 got to be ready

happycamper11 · 06/10/2019 17:23

My best friend and her mum between them have several frenchies. They are bad chewers as pups but do grow out of it. They are fab dogs but trainability isn't always the best and generally great with kids. Hers have few health issue in as she's carefully selected dogs with long noses and big nostrils. She sometimes breeds them (pups go to friends/acquaintances/friends of friends etc) she'd never let a pup go to a hone where they'd be out for 8 hours daily from the start. I have to say I don't know a soul who has ever taken a dog on in that situation without taking at least some considerable leave for the early weeks. A puppy, whatever the breed absolutely cannot be alone for 8 hours of the day then be left another 8 while their owners sleep. That's very little interaction, opportunities for training, toileting etc. You'd be better with an adult dog who is accustomed to this, the situation is asking for destructive behaviours to manifest

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/10/2019 17:24

kellsbells I don't see what's so 😂 about that. All those adolescent dogs palmed off when they become too much hassle, probably having never been properly socialised and trained thus setting them up with long term problems which some other poor sod will have to sort out. You sound about as clued up as the OP.

DogAndCatPerson · 06/10/2019 17:26

Hilarious hun

LesleyKC · 06/10/2019 17:51

Lots of negative comments and no one says they actually have a Frenchie. We have Frank the Tank. We've had him from 12 weeks and he's now coming up 3. He's an absolute joy and fabulous with the baby. Yes he takes extra care when it's warm and can't be over excersised and yes he can be stubborn bit he also knows left from right and only crosses the road when he's told. They are trainable it just takes a bit longer and more repetition because they're not the brightest. That's also what makes them huge fun and will give your kids many laughs. Perhaps a bit more homework would have been good but you've not landed yourself with a whole host of trouble. Frank was house trained in 2 weeks with hard work and time working from home. They can have health problems but that depends on your breeder and whether they were responsible. Some colours have more health problems than others. Most breeds have some issues. French bulldog club of England have loads of info as does kennel club. You can great flavoured chew toys. We let Frank choose a branch of our conifers when he wanted. He would bring it inside and chew merrily. He never once chewed our furniture. Stop panicking. Get some good chew toys and enjoy. Don't get soft toys they get destroyed in a flash. Get a kong toy and put pate in and try a variety of foods. There's plenty to choose from and Frank likes us to mix it up a bit. Give yourself a break and do your homework now. You'll love him Smile

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/10/2019 18:53

Lesley did you miss the part where OP said she was planning to leave a puppy alone for 8 hours a day, five days a week?

OP, if you're for real (and I hope you aren't), rehome the puppy now and don't get another dog. Get stick insects or something.

OrchidInTheSun · 06/10/2019 18:55

@LesleyKC - I have a brachy breed and I know loads of people with frenchies. They are the most popular breed in the U.K. at the moment.

You know what that means? Loads of people who buy them to breed. And loads of people who want one but want a cheap one. So that means a huge amount of bad breeding and puppy farming. Last year two bags of Frenchie puppies were dumped in a hedgerow near where I live. About 14 puppies in all - thrown out of the window of a truck.

Anyone who buys a puppy and wants to leave it alone all day long isn't w dog lover. Anyone who buys a dog without doing a huge amount of research isn't a dog lover. People like the OP are fuelling the puppy farm industry. It's really shit and dogs are not bloody accessories. I will not soft-soap this message to make people feel better.

Unless we make buying from puppy farms completely socially unacceptable and leaving dogs alone completely unacceptable, we will have rescues full to bursting.

Moondancer73 · 06/10/2019 19:18

You have a puppy and are going to leave him for 8 hours? That alone is far too long for ANY dog let alone a puppy, so he's almost bound to get bored and chew.
Why did you not read up on health issues that these dogs have before getting him? It's actually in the press and media without having to do that about what problems brachycaephalic dogs suffer with but any responsible owner would read up first.
You seriously need to put in place W people coming in at least twice a day every day to spend time with him - you absolutely can't leave him that period of time, he's going to need to go out to the toilet aside from anything else

fivedogstofeed · 06/10/2019 19:50

He is almost 10 weeks. Lots of people have dogs and work all day... it’s not uncommon

Many of these people also get rid of their pup after a few months when they realised he's not housetrained and has eaten the house.

You've bought a puppy farmed Frenchie - chewing will be the least of your worried unfortunately. :(

TheFaerieQueene · 06/10/2019 19:52

If this OP is for real I am shocked. Leaving a puppy or dog every day for 8 hours is abuse.

Willow2017 · 06/10/2019 20:30

Lesley
DRTFT.
Op.hasnt a clue about dogs never mind frenchies.
No wonder people are angry with her.

It's people like her who encourage people to.just breed a litter from their own dodgy dog just for the ££ never mind the whole puppy farm business.

Medievalist · 06/10/2019 20:59

I could weep. I really could. The sheer ignorance of so many people who acquire dogs is breathtaking and soul destroying. I can't bear to think about dogs in the hands of such people.

People who are so stupid as to think that because lots of other people work all day and leave their dogs alone that makes it alright. Maybe it's okay to commit crimes - because so many people do 🙄Hmm

People who buy fashionable breeds with inherent health problems thereby encouraging unscrupulous scum to keep breeding them.

People who buy from puppy farms or lie to breeders about the fact that they are going to be left alone all day.

No doubt the op will feel justified in caging her puppy all day to stop him chewing the house. Absolutely heartbreaking.

We have a 16 week old pup in the house. We got him aged 11 weeks because his owner didn't want him (hadn't realised what hard work he would be). I simply can't imagine leaving him alone all day. He's a baby. He needs attention, comfort, interaction.

Puppies/dogs aren't things to be taken out and played with when it suits then ignored when it doesn't.

Notwiththeseknees · 06/10/2019 21:10

This thread is so sad. I can't believe a reputable breeder would sell you a puppy if you told them how you intended to treat it.
That poor puppy.
