Merry Christmas Eve everyone battling with puppies. I am paranoid about eating our stash of mince pies incase I drop any. Having to sneakily eat them in another room to stop myself panicking around BiteyDog.

On the other side we have already cooked our turkey (always cook it early and have it with veg today) and BiteyDog approves of our cooking. His eyes were like saucers when he sampled it Grin

DeathByPuppy · 24/12/2019 13:13

I’d (stupidly) bought a nice dress to wear on Christmas Day. Certainly won’t be able to wear it as puppy jumps up and pulls on clothes when he gets silly. Lots of my clothes have now got holes in the sleeves from him trying to play ‘tug’ with my clothes Hmm. Jeans and an old long sleeved top it is!

DeathByPuppy · 24/12/2019 13:15

I put ours in the kitchen (behind stair gate) when we’re eating snacky stuff in the living room, @BiteyShark. Or distract him with an antler if he’s in the same room with us.

BiteyShark · 24/12/2019 13:19

I am just terrified of dropping raisins. I do this stupid eating thing over a large plate so I can't accidentally drop any. I don't have grapes in the house anymore but can't resist mince pies Grin

DeathByPuppy · 24/12/2019 13:37

Yes, the ‘innocuous foods that can kill dogs’ list is somewhat overwhelming, isn’t it? I accidentally (minorly) poisoned ours with human pate in his kong. I used a tiny wedge off the end of a pre-packed supermarket chicken liver pate. He LOVED it but about two hours later looked peaky and developed a runny bum (loose poo but normal intervals, not true diarrhoea). Could not work out what the issue was. I thought we’d just overfed him and he was feeling a bit over faced by it all, google seemed to agree. Until it occurred to me to read the back of the bloody pate packet and saw ‘shallot powder’ about halfway down the ingredients Sad. Phoned the vet who, after going through what he’d had and his symptoms, said he was likely to just feel a bit ropey due to the small amounts but to monitor him and bring him in immediately if anything changed. Anyway, he was/is fine. Major lesson learned though! I now check the ingredients for EVERYTHING and any food dropped it immediately picked up. I need to work on the ‘leave it’ command though, just in case.

BiteyShark · 24/12/2019 13:56

We did similar with a sausage as I hadn't read the packet ingredients. Lots of runny poos later Blush.

When BiteyDog was a young puppy we had to have dressings changed for a sliced paw pad over Christmas and New year in the emergency vets as ours was closed. They said they were always really busy (the dressings change for them was an easy welcome break) with dogs eating mince pies and chocolates. Christmas Day was extremely busy in the waiting room.

DeathByPuppy · 24/12/2019 14:00

I can imagine there are lots of festive food accidents over Christmas.

Ouch at sliced pad. That sounds nasty.

DeathByPuppy · 24/12/2019 15:13

We’ve been doing really well over the last few days with puppy. He’s settled down a bit and we’re learning to manage his ‘boisterous moments’. However, he has just bitten DD’s (17) nose in one of those manic moments. It was as much her fault as his. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve told her to keep her face away from his face as he gets giddy, which starts licky and ends nippy if you don’t de-escalate.

DeathByPuppy · 24/12/2019 16:48

Both are fine, btw, just a bit shocked by it. It’s just bloody annoying that she doesn’t learn and then it ends in them both taking it too far and getting into trouble.

Adult DS is no better, he’s a massive wind up merchant and loves stirring the dog up in play. I tell him endlessly not to do it, that puppy can’t understand that he can’t roughplay like that all the time, with everyone and won’t know when to turn it off, so will likely hurt someone. He needs to be taught consistent rules and played with calmly.

Bloody kids.

BiteyShark · 24/12/2019 17:18

You have my sympathy. It was hard enough just getting DH to behave well around BiteyDog. Can't imagine how hard it is with DC (even older ones).

Spotty528 · 24/12/2019 19:43

Hope all the puppies enjoy their Christmas days!

We’re still struggling with the biting. I was thinking today that if the biting stopped I’d actually rather enjoy spotty pup’s company!

Snufflesdog · 24/12/2019 23:09

@BiteyShark omg yes dh is the worst one for it!!

We are staying with family and puppy is losing her mind
Hasn’t had a single nap all day, and taking about 3 trips outside each time before she’ll wee because all the new garden smells are so much fun.

Praying she’s easier tomorrow, am panicking hard about the amount of white carpets And pristine furniture in this house

Spotty528 · 25/12/2019 07:02

You’re so brave snuffles, hope all goes well. We’re keeping it all very low key this year-my stress levels couldn’t take it!

Last night was so tricky, got pup to sleep, dc to sleep-finally! Then next door comes home late and starts banging around-pup wakes and starts whining, dc wakes. By the time we were confident that dc was asleep again it was getting pretty late. Santa woke pup again delivering the presents, more whining. The fear of dc waking was unreal! Finally all was quiet, presents delivered. 4 hours later dc wakes, I didn’t want to cope with pup in the living room (he’s not allowed in there yet due to carpet and cats) so we had to try and keep things quiet. Thankfully he didn’t wake so we had a nice calm present opening. I’m exhausted already!!!

BiteyShark · 25/12/2019 07:34

Happy Christmas all young puppies remember this time next year they will be gorgeous lovely adult dogs Crown Smile

DeathByPuppy · 25/12/2019 07:45

I’m in bed. DH has got up with the dog and to start Christmas lunch prep (he’s the main cook in the house). The kids and my mother would sleep all day if we let them so there’s no rush to get up. We literally only woke at 7:30 for the dog. I’ll get up in a bit.

Merry Christmas one and all. xx

BiteyShark · 25/12/2019 07:48

BiteyDog has had his breakfast with a sprinkling of cold cooked turkey on top. It didn't last long Grin

DeathByPuppy · 25/12/2019 08:05
Grin

Mine wolfs his meals, despite the ‘slow feeder’ bowl [hollow laugh]. He and the cat will get their Christmas dinner as their evening meal, as we won’t eat until mid afternoon (too late for puppy’s lunch).

CockerShark · 25/12/2019 22:59

Well, we’ve had 12 for dinner today and I was expecting our pup to be an absolute nightmare but she has been amazing! No noise whilst we ate, just settled in her crate and been okay with all the noise all day. Really, really pleased with her. Hope everybody has had a settled and lovely Christmas 🎄

SpringerMonster · 25/12/2019 23:08

My monster was a bit if a pest when we sat down to eat at 5ish. Kept jumping up at the table trying to get to the plates. Normally she will try once or twice and give up but was much more persistent today. Turns out no one gave her lunch today so she was probably starving! Oops...extra Turkey with her dinner!

heatseeker14 · 25/12/2019 23:14

We have had a chilled day today. I only had to cook for 6 🙌🏻 Pup has been fabulous. DH took him for a walk then he slept while we had dinner. He made me really laugh when he jumped on my father-in-law and his girlfriend. Very nearly knocked the Prosecco out of their hands 😂 Merry Christmas to you all 🎅

namechanged984630 · 26/12/2019 00:28

Just need to vent on here in a thread where people will understand!

We have a five month old (giant) retriever. I found the first 6 weeks v challenging as I work from home for myself (I write novels) and got very little done. Settled into a good groove the past two months with house training sorted etc.

We hosted 19 people for Christmas today and I can honestly say it was perhaps the most stressed I've ever been. 9 kids who wouldn't leave the dog alone, her barking in her room, me being totally paranoid about bloody raisins and grapes rolling around on the floor. Blush

Am in bed now and feel as though I have performed brain surgery or flown a plane. Does this hyper vigilance wear off? Our puppy has been quite sickly and eats ANYTHING on the floor. Christmas is just such a nightmare.

Spotty528 · 26/12/2019 08:35

Well done everyone for getting through it! I bottled Christmas this year and kept it quiet but we are going to the in laws today with pup and I’m very apprehensive especially now it’s raining all day so a walk won’t be as enjoyable.

RoxiFruitcake · 26/12/2019 09:30

HELP!! 11 week old puppy has sickness and severe trots. Vets obviously closed. Do you have any advice for me pleeeeeeaase.

BiteyShark · 26/12/2019 09:35

Roxi your vet (assuming uk) should have an emergency vet number that you can phone. You need to be careful with young puppies that they don't get dehydrated especially with vomiting.

DeathByPuppy · 26/12/2019 11:38

Yes, vet. If there a chance he/she has eaten anything toxic then make sure you tell the vet.

Best of luck Flowers
