I definitely think I'd have been more cautious about over exercising a larger breed, my boy seems quite compact and hardy. Anyway not much chance of over exercising him atm as he's on strike half the time I try and take him out 🙄

Loving the pics, here's one of my favs of my boy 😊

My puppy is super clingy and wants to be held the majority of the time. She's not keen on the crate either so persevering with that. I'm currently sleeping on the sofa next to the crate but she howls if i shut the crate door so she comes out and whines to be cuddled. Honestly its worse than a newborn. I haven't left her during the day yet but will need to next week just for half an hour to begin with. She cries if i leave the room currently, honestly don't remember any of this with my last dog! Picture for cuteness.
On the walking front, she's not vaccinated yet but advice from breeder due to her long back is 1 minute per week of her life until 9 months. I had a basset before and it was the same for her though we definitely let her play off lead more than that.
Please tell me it gets easier Hmm

Fab news on your pup forest.

We seem to be experiencing all the issues.... We have an extremely bitey pup. She's now almost 14 weeks and she's constantly biting and lunging at any skin she can find! Not sure if we should be worried. She doesn't growl or snarl but she can snap. And once she bites on to you it's difficult to get her off. She also wants to lie on us at all opportunities when she isn't playing. Won't just lie on her bed or mat or in the crate. And she constantly cries if she's left in the room herself. It's draining. There are a few plusses... She can be left alone with minimal fuss, she isn't bothered if she knows we are out the house. Toilet training is coming on very well. Very few accidents. And she now sleeps through the night.. Although this is in a pen in our bedroom. I just feel the biting and clingyness is outweighing the good Hmm she also isn't a huge fan of going for walks quite yet... We thought she would love it and that would tire her out... no such luck.

ClownsandCowboys · 19/11/2019 19:19

Things puppy has chewed and/or eaten today:
-ham sandwich
-whole packet of poo bags, several shredded (don't think she ate much)
-PE kit

  • a roll of kitchen towel
-a mugshot, including packet

Jeez, and she's hyper and bitey. I could have quite happily sent her back today!

CockerShark · 19/11/2019 19:52

Good to hear your experiences of bitey, growly puppies! She’s been put away in the crate if she gets over excited as that’s when she really goes for it. A couple of minutes is usually enough to settle her. Also enforcing nap time! She’s still biting and growling but is a bit better tonight.

Gorgeous puppies 😍

heatseeker14 · 19/11/2019 21:10

Your puppy is a cutie, CockerShark 😍

Sounds like your puppy has been on the rampage @ClownsandCowboys!!

Had a minor recall blooper earlier. Spotted a dog off the lead too late. Dpup ran like the clappers up to him. I stood calling his name instead of ‘come’, but tbh I could have screamed blue murder and he probably wouldn’t have noticed 🙄 I recalled dpup once he had enthusiastically introduced himself to the dog. The owner then told me I need to train my dog commands before he hits adolescence. 10 minutes earlier I managed to call him from quite a distance before he got to a group of dogs.

Ledkr · 19/11/2019 21:34

Can I join please? Getting first ever puppy tomorrow. She is a Chiuaua cross and 16 weeks.
Dont flame me but I literally have no bloody clue.
We have a crate and bedding and toys and bowls and food. Puppy pads galore.
What do I do with her at night? She's been with her sisters and brother in the utility room at her owners with puppy pads and beds and is left overnight.
I assumed we'd do similar but now I'm reading about having them in with you in the bedroom and thinking oh dear! Of course I can now see how scary that would be for her.
What do you all do at night?

hermionelodge · 19/11/2019 22:41

Hi ledkr congrats on getting your new puppy! Despite all the hard work, they really are the best. To be honest, in regards to preparation, I spent so long googling and reading all different sources and felt so smug that I had a plan... didn't help me in the slightest! Our pup has a wilful mind of her own! Puppy pads were no use to us as She just ripped them and ate them. Also went to the toilet anywhere but. We ended up just taking her out every 30mins and giving treats and praise if she went. We took her out through the night as well. In regards to bed time. She slept first night in her crate downstairs until 4am, then after that she just howled. We tried sleeping on the sofa next to the crate but that didn't work. Then I slept on the floor next to the crate, but that stopped working. Then we took her crate to the bedroom but she hated the door being shut. Now, we have a small play pen at the end of the bed and she sleeps no bother in there. I have no idea how we are ever going to get her back downstairs... She hates the crate unless she's in it when we are out of the house. I would suggest maybe sleeping downstairs by the crate for the first couple of nights to settle her if you dont want her in the bedroom, I wish we had done that from the beginning! Every puppy is different though and you just have to find what works best for you. Would also suggest looking into some training classes too. Good luck! Also, sorry that's such a novel.. the app doesn't allow me to do paragraphs...Hmm

SunnyUpNorth · 20/11/2019 12:45

My little guy doesn’t seem well today, it’s so sad. He slept through for the first time in ages but I’m now wondering if it’s because he has some kind of bug. He ate his breakfast and lunch, although slowly rather than the usual gobble, but has just been a bit listless and really tired since he got up. Isn’t following me around at his usual pace either. We went for a short walk and he was ok. I’ve got home wrapped up in a blanket next to me on the couch now and just keeping an eye on him.

I feel like his pulse is quite fast and he was shaking/shivering a bit I think before hence now have him under the blanket. But not sure if I’m just imagining that.

Seeing as he is eating and drinking plus has been to the loo I’m guessing it’s a case of keeping an eye on him rather then needing a vet appt?

heatseeker14 · 20/11/2019 13:04

Bless him, SunnyUpNorth. I would just keep an eye on him. If he stops eating and more importantly drinking, I would take him to the vet. As long as he is eating, drinking and going to the toilet I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s horrible though when they are poorly 😞

No flaming from over here, Ledkr. I thought our puppy would sleep in the kitchen in his crate. That all went out of the window, and now our puppy now sleeps in a crate in my bedroom! If you don’t want to have your puppy in your bedroom, prepare to spend sometime downstairs sleeping on a sofa or air bed next to her for a while.

Ledkr · 20/11/2019 13:14

Thanks for kind advice.
We have delayed pick up as my Dd has a sick bug so lady is hanginf onto pup so I can cope with one thing at once. I think she was secretly pleased as she loves them all so much.
She said hers are fine in the utility all night but that's with the litter so I'm not expecting much for now.
My girls would love her in With them but a grumpy teen and tired 8 year old wil be a lot on top of a puppy.
She is 16 weeks so not so young so I'll just have to see.
I was awake half the night worrying about it all but feel a bit more positive today.
My ds hasa dog he had from a puppy so I will chat to him later for some more advice.

Ledkr · 20/11/2019 13:16

What do you do for toilet during the night. I know she's not trained yet so will she just go on a puppy pad in my room?
I am in the attic so going outside is a trek

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/11/2019 16:36

Hi ledkr we use a crate for our puppy, I was a bit dubious about using one but actually can't imagine not having it now. It's def helped with toilet training as they don't tend to like weeing/pooing in the crate so will ask to go out.

When we bought our puppy home I put him in the crate in the hallway at the bottom of the stairs from day 1, if he cried I got up and put him straight outside for the toilet. I never had any trouble hearing him, a puppies cry is loud!

It's also been really useful to leave him in when we go out, I don't feel confident even now in just leaving him at home uncontained! He's never in the crate in the day for more than 2-3 hours and he tends to settle and go to sleep.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/11/2019 16:39

Oh and puppy pads were useless as puppy just tried to eat them Hmm I think you're better off just teaching them to go outside from day 1. This means watching them like a hawk and putting them outside every 30 mins to start with. When the my get it right, go really over board with the treats and praise, ignore if they make a mistake inside.

ClownsandCowboys · 20/11/2019 17:32

I slept on the sofa with crate next to me. Mainly cos DH is sooo grumpy without sleep, so he was waking up as well when in our room. Every time she woke I took her outside. We used a "toilet phrase", that I said every time she went to the toilet and now she will pretty much wee on demand.

I slept downstairs for about a week, then went back upstairs, but could hear her easily and took her outside. It was tiring, but also a bit like having a newborn where you have those moment together as the only two awake. Maybe I'm looking back with rose tinted glasses!

Clownpup slept through from about 10-12 weeks, I can't quite remember. But she's a large breed, so she's able to hold longer. She only pops 2-3 times a day now.

She now sleeps downstairs in her bed, she seems to prefer it to her crate. We leave radio 4 on for her!

This time of day is her witching hour when she seems to go utterly mental--running around in circles, barking, biting.

bloodywhitecat · 20/11/2019 17:57

Can I join, we collect him on Saturday Grin, he's an ESS cross (we are not sure what the cross is, he was born in a dog rescue and little is known about mum's past.

heatseeker14 · 20/11/2019 21:43

Hi @bloodywhitecat 👋🏻 Your puppy is a beaut.
@Ledkr we took our puppy outside from day 1. If he needs the toilet during the night, he makes a quiet whimper like noise to let me know. I take him out then he happily goes back to sleep in his crate.
My understanding is with puppy pads you may have a better night’s sleep, but it could take longer to toilet train a puppy when they are used to pads.
I left a pad in our pup’s crate overnight the first few nights in case he had an accident. The only time he went on one is when he pooed due to being upset, bless him. That’s when he ended up in our bedroom!

CockapwMum · 20/11/2019 22:05

Hope it's ok for me to join! I have a 12 week old cockapoo pup! He's an absolute beaut but so much hard work!

The good: he knows to go outside for the toilet - 4 days accident free right now! He is very loving and has learnt some tricks already. Provided I put him in his crate when he's sleepy at night, we have no issues with bed time.

The bad: he's so bitey! trying everything we can to stop it but it will take time I guess. He hates when me or my husband are upstairs - even if one of us is with him!

This week we've both had to go back to work. We've been phasing in leaving him in his crate, and it can be very hit or miss! I've been watching him via the Dog Monitor app and he mainly sleeps, but during the times he's awake he is crying, which breaks my heart! There's plenty to amuse him in there but he clearly misses us. It'll get better, right? He's left for around 3.5 hours each time.

Been reading some of the previous threads for a while! All of the advice is really useful!

Ledkr · 20/11/2019 22:07

As we are sharing. Here is mine. We pick her up tomorrow.
I had a sleepless night last night worrying about it all but feel more positive today thanks to you and my son.
The lady says she sleeps all night in a crate at hers but this is with her siblings so I'm not expecting too much.

ClownsandCowboys · 21/11/2019 07:44

I think I've realised why Clownpup has been such an arsehole this week. One of her ears is full of thick, black wax. And it smells. Bad. So probably a ear infection. Hence the increase of biting and lunging cos she's in pain/uncomfortable. Going to phone vet this morning, I feel so bad!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/11/2019 12:22

Oh no re poorly ears, is your puppy feeling better sunny?

I think the trick with crates is to make them really cosy so a nice bed, blanket and soft toys and also to cover it over with a blanket to create a den feel. Also to have it somewhere slightly out of the way but close enough so they can hear/see you.

I'm just back from walking dpup who disgraced himself by rolling in something unspeakable 🤢🤮 needless to say he has just had a bath!!! Why are dogs so gross?!

Spotty528 · 21/11/2019 13:41

Can I join too please? I’ve got another thread going but I’ll move over here now. We’ll have had our pup a week tomorrow, I’m so relived we’re nearly at the one week mark. It’s been a whirlwind.

Pup is now 11 weeks.

Positives-only one accident inside the last couple of days although he’s not asking to go out we’re just putting him out lots.

He’s sleeping well, no crying the last 2 nights. We’re using puppy pads in the night which I know is a no-no put he doesn’t cry for the toilet and I’m really reluctant to start disturbing everyone.

He can sit.

I can’t think of anymore!

Negatives-the mess, the whining, the barking at everything, the logistics of day to day life with a puppy, he’s digging up the garden and the worst is the biting/mouthing.

SunnyUpNorth · 21/11/2019 14:13

Thanks @Girliefriendlikespuppies, he’s ok but still not right. Think I might ring the vets to check if I should bring him in for a once over. He hadn’t eaten his lunch, which is highly unusual, and just isn’t himself. It’s really sad to see 😥

CockapwMum · 21/11/2019 19:54

Yeah I’ve tried a lot with the crate, he settles in there eventually and doesn’t mind. Sleeps in the night ok but doesn’t always willingly go in there the rest of the time!

@Spotty528 I’m with you on the mouthing/biting! It’s hard isn’t it!

Spotty528 · 21/11/2019 20:01

Well I jinxed myself big time. One accident all day and then 5 wees in the space of half an hour this evening-what on earths that all about?!
