I will continue to teach him to get off the sofa by himself using treats. He won’t sleep on our beds, so I’m going to avoid using our bed as a pit stop before he goes in his crate at night.
He usually sleeps in his crate for up to 2 hours in the morning when I pop out shopping etc. If I get back earlier, I will open the crate door for him. He will then mooch about and eventually flop on the floor to sleep.
I don’t put him in his crate and close the door during the day while we are at home. Should we be doing this?

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/10/2019 18:16

My pup started growling when he didn’t want to be picked up too. We did the same and started asking him to move himself, enticing with treats if necessary. We didn’t want him to get into a habit of growling at us, and I supposed I wouldn’t expect a grown dog to like being carried around either. He’s completely happy to be lifted if he wants to get somewhere, like in or out of the car, just not when he isn’t on board with the idea!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/10/2019 18:19

I also now give him a treat before picking him up if I have to pick him up for anything he doesn’t want to do, so he gets a trade off. He’s never yet growled or snapped with a treat in his mouth.

heatseeker14 · 29/10/2019 20:47

That has made me feel much better @MaryLennoxsScowl. I have not had a great day today with him. He has been pushing boundaries, biting and on hyper drive for most of the day. He has been asking to go out to the toilet but not going. Spent a lot of time in my garden this afternoon. I’m really looking forward to bedtime!
Sometimes I look at him and wonder if he has been possessed! I’m really starting to worry about his teenage phase now Shock

Outtheforest · 30/10/2019 06:57

Sadly forest pup is still not well, at home but think we will have to go back to the vets if no improvement tomorrow. He really is miserable bless him

ClownsandCowboys · 30/10/2019 08:55

Oh no, hope he feels better soon

SunnyUpNorth · 30/10/2019 13:28

@Keepsmiling1 I think your daily routine sounds fine and reasonably similar to ours. I try to ignore mine most of the time unless I’m actively doing some play/training etc with him. I figure he needs to get used to occupying himself and not be fussed over all day. When you go to peoples houses with established older dogs they just potter around by themselves with just the odd pat or word of affection. I want one of those!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/10/2019 22:53

Hope he feels better soon forest

Dd gave dpup a chew earlier, a rawhide type thing. I don't really like him having them and hadn't twigged that's what it was, he seems fine but more thirsty than usual.

There's always something to worry about!!

Outtheforest · 31/10/2019 11:26

Thankyou, hes a little perkier today so hoping the antibiotics are finally kicking in.
girlie I've always avoided rawhide type treats as you read so many horror stories about them. We've always managed to get bones from local butchers pretty easily, usually for free or for very small amounts.

Keepsmiling1 · 31/10/2019 11:53

We have just come back from an hours playtime with SmileyPup and his friend! We hired a local field so they could have a good run around off lead. It's all securely enclosed so no worries about them escaping. He had a great time and is now curled up on my knee fast asleep!!

heatseeker14 · 31/10/2019 18:10

@Keepsmiling1 that sounds so awesome Smile.

Good to hear dpup is feeling better today @Outtheforest.

BiteyMcBiteFace · 01/11/2019 16:33

So pleased to see an update from SkeletonSkins Smile I was only thinking about Skeletonpup the other day and wondering how things were going now

I can't believe Biteypup is 6 months old today Shock She is growing up so fast and when I checked the email confirmations from the trainer for the courses I've booked so far it would appear that she's been in training every week from 13th July 2019 and will be until 18th January 2020! At the end of our novice course we had a little timed competition and she won Star We have also been to a couple of outdoor classes held in an enclosure locally and she really enjoyed those, so I would like to try and do a few more (weather dependant).

Isn't it lovely to see them playing Keepsmiling1 We took Biteypup to meet my niece's 14 month old yellow lab and they had a ball. She might have been half his size, but she gave as good as she got Shock

loveliesbleeding1 · 01/11/2019 16:56

Hi everyone I haven’t posted in a little while anybody have any ideas for natural dental sticks for my 14 week lab cross? I think she’s started teething.thanks

SpringerMonster · 01/11/2019 19:35

Thought I'd update on Springerpup who is now 12 weeks old. We've been finding it tough but starting to get somewhere now I think. Shes slept through from 11pm - 6am since tuesday night which has been amazing. Its unbelievable the difference a full nights sleep makes...
House training is getting there and even the biting isnt too awful. She had her second vaccinations yesterday so can start walks next week. We are currently on a 4 hour car journey tho and had to stop to give her dinner and I put her on some grass to pee. Trying to reassure myself that wont have done her any harm!
Next steps are to try and actually leave her alone...there is someone with her all the time during the day at the moment but we need to be able to pop her in her crate and leave her for an hour or so!

ClownsandCowboys · 02/11/2019 20:37

@BiteyMcBiteFace or @BiteyShark I noticed on another htrad you used a long line and popping in crate for crazy biting. We've got a long house lead, would we just put that in her and use that to put her (drag her) into her crate?

Or we could keep carrying her?

heatseeker14 · 02/11/2019 20:56

@loveliesbleeding1 we give dpup frozen carrots and damp scrunched up frozen tea towels to chew on.
@SpringerMonster it’s so good when they sleep through. It’s easier to deal with a mischievous, bitey fuzz ball after a good night’s sleep.

Took dpup on a puppy park walk today. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. The only issue is with him going loopy and pulling like a train on the lead because he is desperate to meet other dogs. Walked so lovely back to the car after showing me up Grin.

loveliesbleeding1 · 02/11/2019 21:17

heatseeker14 funny you should say about the frozen tea towels because I was on a Reddit puppy forum today and someone mentioned a damp flannel scrunched and frozen,so I tried it and my pup loves it! I am going to try the carrot tomorrow, thanks for that idea.❤️

MimsyBorogroves · 02/11/2019 21:20

@loveliesbleeding1 I have a 16 week old lab. We use chicken feet, rabbits ears, yak bars and pizzle sticks.

None of which look particularly appealing. House looks like a horror show.

loveliesbleeding1 · 02/11/2019 21:27

Thanks mimsy,do I buy those in the pet shop,or the butcher? I’m such a newby 😩

Alsohuman · 02/11/2019 22:05

So, we had some fireworks tonight and Her Ladyship didn’t turn a hair. She looked around to see where the bangs were coming from, looked at me and went back to sleep. Really pleased.

BiteyShark · 03/11/2019 04:42

ClownsandCowboys I didn't use a long line so maybe that's BiteyMcBiteFace but I did use the crate for enforced timeouts which worked to calm him when he was overtired and bitey.

I used to walk him into the crate, hard to describe but would place hands either side of him avoiding the biting and march him in the other room and into the crate.

ClownsandCowboys · 03/11/2019 12:02

Thanks @BiteyShark we've been doing that, and like this morning she runs away as soon as I try and guide her. She bucks like a wild horse and sprints away. It becomes a game.

We now have a situation where youngest child (7) won't come downstairs is she's out and if she does will run screaming and climb up the sofa to get away from her. Which of course Clownpup sees as playing.

I've tried explaining to her over and over. Her ASD means she finds it hard to not associate one experience with every occurance.

I've just lost it with the kids and the dog. I'm not well, and ds left a door open and Clownpup ran out and across the road.

BiteyShark · 03/11/2019 12:11

Does your house setup allow for timeouts using baby gates instead of the crate? Might be easier if getting her to the crate is problematic e.g. everyone leaves the room rather than she goes in the crate?

ClownsandCowboys · 03/11/2019 13:07

Thanks for answering. Sorry I realise that was about soo much more than the puppy. Bad morning in this house .

Yes I think we might try a gate to make it easier. In the end I put her in crate and after some crying she went to sleep. So I think she was over stimulated.

Sorry again for brain dump!

BiteyShark · 03/11/2019 13:10

Mine was always an overtired overstimulated mess when he was bitey. He used to throw his bed about and then crash on top of it to sleep.

As he got older I think he started to recognise his own signs and would take himself off to his bed after rampaging around Grin.

Baby gates are good when you just need to quickly get out of the way of the teeth Grin
