I’d been looking for one of these but the only puppy support thread currently running is for older puppies. I’ve seen a few threads recently from posters who have new puppies like me, and thought I’d start our own group as I’d love to compare notes. But all welcome!

To kick off -

My pup, DartyPup, is a female poodle cross who is nearly 11 weeks old. Very sweet, friendly, fairly calm, sleeps a good stretch at night in her crate no problem and is happy to play in the garden by herself if I’m in the kitchen/conservatory and we easily have eyes on each other. She has a lot of naps and is doing well with house training.

But- she has the usual puppy traits of being needy and nippy. She loves biting bare toes and has a witching hour in the evening (as another poster aptly describes it!).

I adore the bond we seem to have bit am finding it draining. My children are old enough to be hands on and are keen to be, but their periods of peak energy don’t always correspond with the Pup’s. And when it comes down to it, she often wants me and so will whine if left with them downstairs while I escape for a rest. If they mistakenly leave a door open giving her access to the stairs, she’ll leg it up to find me. A stair gate isn’t an option unfortunately due to the design of our stairs.

Both my kids have never been particularly early risers and I’ve always been secretly pleased about dodging 6am wake up calls ... until DartyPup.

How did he manage to open the stair gate?!
How lovely that he left you a present in your bedroom Grin

6 sleeps until MarvelousPup arrives at ours. I really hope we finally get a baby who sleeps. 😂

calmpuppycrazykids · 16/06/2019 14:18

Our puppy isn't allowed upstairs so luckily we never found any poos upstairs.
we haven't crate trained our puppy but if any of you had something like a blanket that came from his/her mum could that help settle them.
Barney still has his blanket that came from his mum with her smell and litter mates and he loves it he plays with it actually im worried what will happen if he loses it Grin
His confidence at home is great apart from when the hoover is on but my Dd fusses over him.
The walking is getting but he still pulls back a bit and still cries when he is walking but his tail is wagging so I'm totally lost.
He seems to not like the park but we have a horse track that goes past our back garden and he seems to enjoy that and we have had lots of positive interactions with other dogs so we are getting there slowly.
He is also growing rapidly and worrying how much food to feed him but he is going to be 15 weeks next week and I have to say so far I've not had a day that I've thought what have we done Grin

Yet

Puddingmama2017 · 17/06/2019 06:26

1 more sleep until PuddingPup arrives. I’m so excited! Kids have all been briefed on behaviour, rooms tidied and puppy proofed. One last whizz around tonight with a reluctant DP who has had enough of tidying and just wants a puppy to play with now. Smile

Hi please can I join? I have a 9 week old rescue. Little man was found in a ditch on my friends farm and we took him home a week ago. He's wonderful, actually quite well behaved and full of puppy crazy. My poor older girl is still looking at me to ask what have I done Hmm and mainly avoids him. Can't say I blame her as the bitey nippy stage is not at all fun. Any ideas on how to stop him using his older sister as a chew toy? He's pretty much going outside to do his business which is great. Not crate trained but sleeps through the night in the kitchen so that's awesome.

Charm23 · 17/06/2019 07:21

Hey hope you don't mind me joining? DH and I have a 12 week old black Labrador puppy. He's doing very well with training (he can do sit, paw, lay down, stay and sometimes fetch) and haven't had any accidents in a while. He's extremely attached to me and whines if he isn't near me, waits outside the loo for me etc. He doesn't like his crate very much and settles for bed much quicker if I'm not there. He sleeps through the night. Has chewed to death several toys already. We have a stair gate up but he comes upstairs occasionally and can happily go up and down the stairs. He hates bath time. Scared of other dogs barking. He's due his second jabs on Wednesday. He'll be meeting his beagle-cousin (my bros dog) in a couple weeks time!

Mouldiwarp1 · 17/06/2019 07:34

Mouldipup finally arrived yesterday (seems a bit mean to call him that - do I need to change my username?). He’s gorgeous and so far has been really rather well- behaved - pooped outside, slept from 11-6 without weeing in his crate (although did an excitement wee as soon as I let him out this morning). He’s not, however, eaten much. Seems just too excited to focus on food. Is this normal?

Morton30 · 17/06/2019 07:46

Yes, morton pup also ignored his food on his first day then made up for it on day 2. Too many new smells and excitement!

DuchessDarty · 17/06/2019 15:27

Welcome new owners and pups! LOL at MoudiPup. Yep you might have to change your username @Mouldiwarp1, you’ve not got a lot of options, it’s not like Warp(ed)Pup is heaps more respectful Wink 1Pup?!

I’m very excited for your imminent arrival @Puddingmama2017 and yours too @MsMarvellous although I know you have longer to wait.

In PooNo StairGate news:

Yesterday all eliminations were done outside.
Today was going well, until I brought DartyPup up to my study as I had to use my printer to scan something (after working downstairs so to be with DartyPup close to the garden). She wanted to come with me and I let her as it was only going to be a brief visit. Ha ha ha ha. She promptly did a poo. While I was cleaning that up she did another one - on an open pack of white printer paper. That’ll teach me to have had a romantic dream of me working in my study in future while she slept calmly at my feet.

I shouted her name in frustration and she ran under my desk to hide, bless her. Then I felt bad. Sad

MouldiPup not Moudi - way to mess up a joke

@DuchessDarty DartyPup clear thinks work is just a bit shit 😂

My friend is bringing a bunch of old towels to school tomorrow for MarvelousPup to use which saves me trawling charity shops this week. Crate and bed are all set up and lead and collar are hanging by the door. I've reread easy least puppy squeezy and printed the files from the Facebook page that comes recommended.

Just need a dog now Grin

3teens2cats · 17/06/2019 16:43

Dh managed to work from home a couple of days last week. He found if he took him outside nd wore him out for half an hour he would be settled and happy to just snooze next to him for at least two hours. He was worried he wouldn't get much done but it was OK as long as he stuck to the half hr outside every two hours cycle.

MrsEricBana · 17/06/2019 17:18

While I was cleaning that up she did another one - on an open pack of white printer paper.
🤣🤣🤣

MrsEricBana · 17/06/2019 17:19

I like her style.

Spongebob79 · 17/06/2019 21:22

Omg I bought some extra thick bully sticks and the mega bitey pup is loving it, has been sat for 10mins now chewing it

Spongebob79 · 17/06/2019 21:34

Oh spoke too soon, she now gone and buried it in her crate

Mouldiwarp1 · 17/06/2019 21:56

Nah, I’ll stick to Mouldipup - he can’t read (yet) so it won’t hurt his feelings! He did wee on the floor this evening, but it was my fault not his as he gave all the signs and I was just too thick to recognise them. Still not eating as much as I’d like, but definitely better. Have had a lovely day with him, getting more adventurous and exploring- we’re largely open plan downstairs so it’s been a bit daunting for him, but he’s getting bolder. Sweetest little man so far - but I know I’m heading for a fall!

Puddingmama2017 · 18/06/2019 12:32

PuddingPup is here!!

He’s been in the garden, no wees, he saved them for his crate, but he did eat a woodlouse. Grin

@Puddingmama2017 he's so handsome ❤️

Puddingmama2017 · 18/06/2019 18:01

He is rather, despite his cannibalistic feelings towards woodlice. We’ve had one wee in the house, two outside. Even a nap in his crate.

He did however get rather too interested as I changed DS’s nappy. Envy

3teens2cats · 18/06/2019 18:06

What a beautiful boy :).

OK everyone. Toilet training, how is it going? We are so up and down. Some days I think he is getting it and others he seems to not understand at all. He hates the wet grass even though I have cut it really short. He is starting to indicate he wants to go outside....... to play, no correlation really with needing the toilet. Quite often he will go eventually while outside so we are heavily praising and rewarding when he does go outside. I am not getting stressed about accidents indoors. Pup is not allowed upstairs and apart from one cheap rug, downstairs is washable floor so cleaning up is fine. One thing I know that is not helping is no one person is consistently looking after him. I take the lead first thing and from mid afternoon onwards but while I am at work it could be dh, or one of the teens depending on our schedules. We have an agreed approach though I can't guarantee how consistent everyone else is. He is now 14 weeks old. He went to stay with my parents on the weekend for 24hrs as we had a planned trip. They have an older dog and he was perfect for them. Copied their dog you see. I wish we had got another puppy a couple of of years ago and our old dog and could have taught him what to do.

moreanimalsthanhumans · 18/06/2019 19:03

Pretty much the same.. getting there slowly... 13 weeks old here.. the rain doesn't help at all! He has learnt a few tricks.. sit, paw and down .. be happiest when learnt toilet fully!

tinkywinkyshandbag · 18/06/2019 19:17

Same here he's good at going outside when taken but not consistent as asking. I just take him outside a lot! Also 13 weeks. Mildly annoyed as was spending 10 to 6.00 but now waking around 2am and again around 4 am for wees. I'm wondering if he's sleeping too much in the day. But I'm wary of over exercising him as I gather it's not good for their joints.
