I’d been looking for one of these but the only puppy support thread currently running is for older puppies. I’ve seen a few threads recently from posters who have new puppies like me, and thought I’d start our own group as I’d love to compare notes. But all welcome!

To kick off -

My pup, DartyPup, is a female poodle cross who is nearly 11 weeks old. Very sweet, friendly, fairly calm, sleeps a good stretch at night in her crate no problem and is happy to play in the garden by herself if I’m in the kitchen/conservatory and we easily have eyes on each other. She has a lot of naps and is doing well with house training.

But- she has the usual puppy traits of being needy and nippy. She loves biting bare toes and has a witching hour in the evening (as another poster aptly describes it!).

I adore the bond we seem to have bit am finding it draining. My children are old enough to be hands on and are keen to be, but their periods of peak energy don’t always correspond with the Pup’s. And when it comes down to it, she often wants me and so will whine if left with them downstairs while I escape for a rest. If they mistakenly leave a door open giving her access to the stairs, she’ll leg it up to find me. A stair gate isn’t an option unfortunately due to the design of our stairs.

Both my kids have never been particularly early risers and I’ve always been secretly pleased about dodging 6am wake up calls ... until DartyPup.

Just popping in to say pup is 16 weeks tomorrow and everything seems so much better all of a sudden. TRIPLE PHEW!! I would have handed him back (and paid them to take him) for the first month but I adore him now. Everything just seems a bit easier. I bought him a little paddling pool today. Officially gone soft. Hope you're all getting on ok. My top tips this week are 1) antler to chew on 2) little cooling vest for baking hot days (especially for fluffy types)

shutthedamndoor · 03/07/2019 22:01

Ah, MrsEricBana thankyou, I needed to hear that! Minidoor is driving me nuts! He's fantastic until about 6pm then the witching hour starts and it doesn't end until he sleeps (about 10pm).
He jumps on the sofa, steals the cushions, nips and barks - everything to get attention. I've tried walking him, playing with him, ignoring him, sitting quietly and stroking him.. it doesn't matter what I do or don't do, I get scratched hands and am increasingly annoyed.
Strategies, anyone, please!

MsMarvellous · 04/07/2019 06:25

Hi chaps.

We get witching hour here too. Otherwise our days are pretty chill. He's 11 weeks today and can start doing pavement walks today. So that'll be nice. I'm just tired.

3teens2cats · 04/07/2019 06:33

When we can't calm down I sit him next to me on the sofa and use a chew toy a bit like a dummy. It's difficult to explain but I hold one end of it and he chews the other. I don't talk to him or stroke him until he begins to calm as that would be too much stimulation. The evening is a busy time with everyone home and busying about so easy to see how he can get over stimulated.
I am guessing the quietness of this thread now means we are settling down into doggy life. We have our final injection tomorrow!! It's been a crazy long wait. I was desperate to get him used to walking on a lead so I have been taking him down to work of an evening and walking him around the site. No dogs are allowed (school site) so risk of infection is very low. I did ask first of course. He did OK, we will keep practising!

MsMarvellous · 04/07/2019 07:05

I hope we can keep it going as mine is still only 11 weeks. Are there any others out there in a similar stage or just starting?

ditavonteesed · 04/07/2019 08:23

Hey our witching hour appears to be from 7am till half 8 ish while everyone getting ready for school and stuff, she just chews everything. Still getting up at 5.39am but now going back after toilet and sleeping till we get up so that's a relief. Susu is 13 weeks now.

SophyStantonLacy · 04/07/2019 10:06

Ours feel calmer too, think he’s 15 or 16 weeks. Nipping is definitely less and we can leave him on his own for a couple of hours which helps with school run etc. He’s starting to jump up at the counters though... (big dog problems!)

shutthedamndoor · 04/07/2019 17:23

Ah, thankyou for the ideas. Minidoor is 12 weeks' old, so I'd appreciate advice from those who have come through this stage, and it would be lovely to keep the thread going with anyone else who's stuck in the middle of it!

MsMarvellous · 04/07/2019 20:09

@shutthedamndoor we're at 11 weeks so similar to you. He's a sweetie. A really challenging nibbly sweetie 😂

WorldOfPhoebe · 05/07/2019 09:38

Hi Everyone!

It won't let me post a picture, but I pick up my 8 week old cocker spaniel pup (Phoebe) tomorrow morning.

Beyond excited! x

MsMarvellous · 05/07/2019 10:12

How exciting @WorldOfPhoebe. Can't wait to see pictures xx

ditavonteesed · 05/07/2019 17:19

Anyone else found toilet training gone completely out the window, I don't know if it's cause she's drinking more because of the heat but we have had 7 Wes in the house today and I have got sunburnt with going out so much.

MsMarvellous · 05/07/2019 19:17

Hey @ditavonteesed that sounds rough. Is it rainy where you are? Mine is out all the time at the mo.

Loo training is fine here but mad half hour every night is hitting hard. We're working on the commands 'settle' 'sit' 'off' but it's early days and hard work.

Mj312 · 05/07/2019 23:06

We have found toilet training ok for the minute, he whines if he wants to go out or will just take himself outside if the back door is open. The only time he wees on the floor is when the kids giddy him up 🙈😂

3teens2cats · 06/07/2019 09:21

16 weeks here and toilet training is more good than bad. Any accidents are normally our fault not his eg called him back inside too soon or didn't notice him asking to go out. Back door is open alot but not all the time. I let him outside by himself if I am in the kitchen and can keep half an eye on him. He can't exactly pee on command but I think he understands when I want him to go eg first thing, before bed etc

LoulabelleAndCo · 06/07/2019 11:41

So happy I found this thread. I have a ten week old cocker and the biting is a nightmare. Not as hard now but when excitable does it really hard and especially not good around kids as it scares them! Really looking forward to this bit ending.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 06/07/2019 13:41

16 weeks here. Craziness abating slightly. He regularly wakes at 4.30am for a wee ( and always does a huge one so he must need it!) but goes back to sleep until we get up. Is laying here now as good as gold chewing his yak cheese. Worst habits are barking at other dogs and chewing the ears off our lurcher. Lead walking is improving. Not sure about toilet training, we have very few accidents but he has more or less free access to outside, not sure he would actually "ask" to go out yet.

Oh so cute!
We're ok with weeing (touch wood) but he doesn't wake us up any more and for the last 2 nights has pooped inside. I guess I'll sleep in the sofa tonight or set an alarm to get him outside at 4am Sad

MsMarvellous · 07/07/2019 07:56

Oh man. Our neighbours had a party last night. That's the third Saturday in a row. We just start progressing with sleep and then they ruin his night. I was up so much last night.

That and he keeps getting an upset tummy. We're trying a new sensitive food being gradually introduced after a bland diet so hopefully that works.

It's harder than having a kid!

shutthedamndoor · 07/07/2019 17:22

Ah MsMarvellous I feel your pain! I've started to do the thing you do with babies, and sleep when minidoor sleeps. I keep telling myself that one day he'll sleep through, and he won't poop 15 times a day...

shutthedamndoor · 07/07/2019 17:23

It really is harder than having a kid, especially when you've still got said kids plus a job...

MsMarvellous · 07/07/2019 18:19

Oh yeah. I have kids and work to do too 😂. I know in 6 months we'll just have a host of alternative issues but at least sleep will probably be sorted 😂

shutthedamndoor · 07/07/2019 21:30

DH is sleeping on the sofa tonight with minidoor at his feet. Hopefully this means that the puppy will wake him up if he needs to go out, and the indoor pooping won't become a habit. Unfortunately, we just gave him (the dog!) worming Tablets and OMG the farts....

3teens2cats · 08/07/2019 06:42

Fingers crossed you had a poop free night. I have to say the worming tablet upset our pup's tummy though.

MsMarvellous · 08/07/2019 06:51

Aaaarrrggghh. MarvelPup is almost 12 weeks old. He can go all night (10-5:30) without a wee but he's still just howling for us. He literally just wants us to stand there while he settles. Don't even need to touch him or interact. We'd made such amazing progress and the last three nights have been horrible again. Up 3/4 times a night. This might kill me.

Any ideas? He loves being in his bed downstairs when we're pottering about. No issues going in and snoozes there through the day. Eats there. Has down time there. I think it's just he wants US.
