Puppy Has Been Bitten

Please help! puppy is on his way to emergency vet.
Our pup had his first outing today after having all his vaccinations. Met a friend who had her dog with her and he bit our pup on the back leg
It bled, and DH thought he could see bone.
I'm so upset, poor puppy.
Is this going to freak him out now? Will he be put off going out? seeing other dogs? he's such a good boy, I'm devestated😢

Sadsometimes these type of wounds take ages to heal.

Here's hoping the glue does the trick Thanks

Softsoftsoft · 23/04/2019 21:51

Thanks guys, I hope so too, it's stressing me out now!

No advice I'm sorry. Sending hugs to you and your pup. Hope they are ok

Wolfiefan · 23/04/2019 22:07

I can only sympathise. My girl chewed her foot and it felt like it took forever to heal. Sad

Softsoftsoft · 24/04/2019 05:38

He is such a good pup bless him. He wears his cone like it's a normal thing to doSmile
and has interacted with other dogs with seemingly no fear, which is what I was worried about.
The only problem he seems to have is the car, he hates getting in it and whines unless someone is sat with him. He probably associates it with going to the vet as we go so often!
They seem to want to change the dressing every 2-3 days. And they want £20+ every visit!!
This isn't the start of life with a puppy I was expectingSad

Not the same injury but my dog cut his paw pad. They tried just to bandage it and it wouldn't heal. They tried glue and it wouldn't stay together. Then they did staples and desssings and finally it healed but not for many weeks. We too had to have the dressing changed every 2-3 days to avoid it causing problems and to top it off it was over Christmas so on Christmas Day we were in the emergency vets getting the dressing changed as my vets were closed. Same for New Year's Eve sat in the emergency vets.

It sucks and gets you down Thanks

His fear from the car can be sorted when he is better.

My dog has been scared to get out of the car thinking we are going to the scary vets as we were there so many times not just for the above. Now he gets out, realises it's the vets and runs in for cuddles even though he still associates the vets table with scary stuff we have removed the other bad associations with good things.

Thanks biteyshark it sounds horrendous. I'm sure we will get there eventually it just seems such a drag right now. I want to be able to relax with him and not worry about his leg all the timeFlowers

To be honest if it wasn't for lovely vet (we saw a different one at the start) who took one look at my dogs paw after a week and half of going back and forth and said that isn't healing we need to staple it then we would have had even longer trying to get it to heal. She had seen us before and knew how active my dog was even when on a no exercise regime Grin

I suspect staples won't be much use on a leg as there isn't much skin to secure it unlike a chunky paw pad but hopefully the glue will do it for your pup. The reason glue failed for us was due to fact that he had to walk on it all the time.

Softsoftsoft · 25/04/2019 06:46

Fingers crossed that the glue has worked today! 🤞🐶

Update.....well we've been to the vet, again
They have decided the wound is starting to heal, it's not perfect, pup still has enlarged lymph node near the bite and it still looks very pink...They have decided to leave it uncovered now and I have to wash it in hibi scrub twice a day.
So he still has to wear the cone of shame and no playing in the dirt!
I am tentatively thinking this is progress.

That sounds really positive. Hibiscrub is brilliant. Just check how much it needs diluting. (Bitter voice of experience here!)

Softsoftsoft · 25/04/2019 20:45

Thanks wolfie the vet did mention diluting itGrin

That's good news.

Diluted Hibiscrub is great. Often use it to help heal cuts and grazes.

Wolfiefan · 25/04/2019 21:08

I either misheard or they told me the wrong ratio. Too strong and she had a reaction to it. She’s a nightmare. Blush

Softsoftsoft · 25/04/2019 21:47

wolfie 🙈 you sound like me. I had to phone the vet back as I couldn't remember when she said we had to go back for check up!

It’s the worry and sleep deprivation. Our breeder says puppy brain is a real phenomenon. Grin

Softsoftsoft · 25/04/2019 22:33

I think you're right! I've not seen such early mornings since DC were little! And pup follows me around like a lost toddlerGrin
Love him to bits tho
