Let me tell you a little bit about him.

He was my first ever dog. A little Jack Russell. Not the best breed for a first time dog owner. He was the cutest pup I’d ever seen with his little brown patch face and fat stumpy legs. My young kids loved him. He was naughty. He ate walls after 2 hour walks. He pulled on his lead terribly. He steal other children’s footballs on the field they’d never get them back because he could dribble better than Wayne Rooney. It cost me £££ replacing them not to mention the embarrassment at the time. If he was let off the lead in a empty field he’d jump like a lamb and not come back till he was ready didn’t give one damn if it was snowing or raining I’d just have to wait. People would tell me having him around my kids was stupid because Jack Russells can nip. That dog adored his children. He spent hours and hours playing on the trampoline with them in the garden. Sat with them when they were sick and sneaked in their beds while they slept and he thought I didn’t know he just lay still under the duvet.

He grew older and behaved more gentlemen like. Still cheeky and occasionally naughty. He didn’t like the cold anymore. He loved nothing more than his bed. He still loved my now teenagers and even yesterday got up to greet them when they come home from college.

He died peacefully in my arms this morning. I held him and told him it was ok that he’d been the best boy.

Having a dog can be rewarding and hard and there were times I didn’t know if I could cope with him anymore. Today I’m so thankful that my little naughty Jack Russell died in my arms after living a full life, loved and part of the family he’d know his whole life. He will be loved the rest of my life he was truly a wonderful member of my family.

Oh you lot. Thank your all for your thoughts and well wishes.
Flowers for those who also have lost little furry family members to rainbow bridge.

My brains a bit of a mush. The kids are gutted. I don’t think they can remember him not been here bless them, so it’s obviously hit them hard.
We’ve decided that because he was a nesh little bugger we don’t want to have him buried so we’ve sorted his cremation’and he can be here with us till we can scatter his ashes on the beech

Again thank you all for being kind to me today.
I’m going to have have a large glass of Wine for my smudger x

I knew when I read the title I was probably going to cry and here we are! So so sorry for your loss and @JustMe's too.
Sounds like he had a great life and dying in his mummy's arms is probably the best way for any dog to go across the bridge. Feeling love til the last second ❤️

Sarahlou63 · 22/03/2019 21:41

Such a lucky boy to have you as a friend. Sleep well Smudger.

TarquinGyrfalcon · 22/03/2019 21:45

What a sweetie. My first dog was a tiny, stubborn, funny, feisty, naughty JRT. I loved him so much.
He lived until he was 15 and even though he's been gone 11 years I still miss him terribly.

Smudger was lucky to have you.

Cherrysherbet · 22/03/2019 21:47

What a beautiful boy. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sitting here in floods of tears after reading your lovely tribute. I hope all the wonderful times you’ve shared bring you comfort.❤️

jeniz · 22/03/2019 23:01

Sorry very sorry your best boy has gone.
He sounds so much like my jrt cross who I lost in Nov aged 15.
I lost another one a collie age 14.5 the day after Boxing Day.
They don’t just leave a hole they leave a massive lake of our tears.
I’m just beginning to think of all the good times we had together over the years and even have a little smile sometimes.
You gave your best boy a wonderful life and You will treasure all your lovely memory’s of him. Xx

EnidPrunehat · 23/03/2019 17:04

Rest well, best boy. Sending you the warmest wishes.

I lost my JRT at the beginning of January. He’d been a little sod in his youth but like your good dog, was one in a million. I like to think there’s a place in the Summerlands where all the Jack Russell’s scamper around, blissfully ignoring any calls to do anything that doesn’t suit them!

My dog has died this morning.
Rowgtfc72 · 25/03/2019 21:00

Got both my jrt to 16. Lost my last one last may, my last words were sleep tight puppy. She'll always be my puppy.
Thinking of you and your best boy xx

BellaVita · 25/03/2019 21:04

Oh this has made me cry and smile at the same time with your description of him

He looks like he was a fine fellow.
