What do you feed your dog?

What do you feed your dog? Our puppy came to us on Hills and from reviews nutritional content is low. I was looking at Eden but worry the high protein content could upset his tummy. He also has nature’s diet meat one meal a day. I’d prefer not to feed raw.

I should say ours is a rescue dog who had collitis soon after we got him

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 10/03/2019 22:27

Homecooked here.

Frozen vegetables (carrots, broccoli, cailuflower, peas) I buy supermarket mixed veg bags depends where I shop that week.

Sardines (one per meal) with a little of the oil. I avoid the boneless skinless ones.

Occasionally he has offcuts of our meat mixed in with his veg with a little olive oil if its not fish.

Once a week I sprinkle and mix in some powdered eggshells.

My vet thinks I'm utterly bonkers but says that my boy is in such fab condition and if I'm willing to cook for him then fine. He's a Westie who is now 11yo been feeding him mainly fish for the last 7/8 years.

Ime with my boy, chicken causes ear infections, I don't feed potatoes, tomatoes, onions or garlic. He doesn't like fruit unless its in a yoghurt.

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 10/03/2019 22:31

Rice is just a "filler" so he doesn't have a lot of it. If I have any left over from our meal then I will mix a bit in with his veg pot as I cook my rice with turmeric.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/03/2019 23:57

Complete mixture - he has a stomach of steel and appears to enjoy the variety

Wet

  • butternut box
  • lukullus
  • akela
  • wolf of wilderness
  • natures menu country hunter
And occasionally an "experimental" tin to see if he likes it (he wasn't a fan of nature diet or millies wolfheart 🙄)

Dry

  • Markus Muhle, as the default option
  • Wolf of Wilderness
  • James wellbeloved grain free
  • Addiscotts

Plus some table scraps, treats (mainly dried offal) and some chews (mainly dried bits of animal - pizzle sticks etc) and the odd raw meaty bone

DogInATent · 11/03/2019 16:30

Sardines (one per meal) with a little of the oil. I avoid the boneless skinless ones.]
Once a week or so I omit her wet food and instead mix a tin of sardines in tomato sauce through her kibble.

OrchidRosemary · 29/03/2019 08:18

Has anyone used pets at home "step up to naturals" puppy food? the ingredients seems good for the price. puppy has been fed on a supermarket kibble but I want something abit better when she comes to us

Sooverthemill · 29/03/2019 09:27

Markus Muhle ordinary for the puppy
Black Angus senior ( also Markus muhle) for the 10 year old

These are cold pressed kibble and you feed according to weight of dog. The puppy eats more at the moment but it costs me about £30 a month for the old boy.

Plus a tablespoon of high quality canned meat to mix in ( old boy has tablets so this makes it more likely he will eat them) and I usually get Wolf of Wilderness now ( used to get Millie's but found the cans were always crushed).

Previously we used Arden grange which the old dog loved but needed something with high green lipped mussel added in for his arthritic joints!

pansydansy · 29/03/2019 09:43

James wellbeloved

pansydansy · 29/03/2019 09:44

And I love it because her poo's don't smell since we switched from bakers. She's 6 months old

OrchidRosemary · 29/03/2019 10:17

no votes for "step up to naturals"?

WatcherOfTheNight · 29/03/2019 10:39

@mymugmytea I highly recommend Millies Wolfheart Countryside Mix for a lab puppy.
It's high meat content and has high enough calcium & fat levels for growth .
(I weaned a litter on it last year)

My boy is coming up for 7 now ,people never believe us ,they think he's 2 Grin
As well as being one of the best quality foods it's VAT free so you do save a bit compared to other foods of the same quality.
I'd also advise weighing it out with scales as recommended,a few grams over or under really do make a difference with the high meat content quality foods , and Labradors do much better when not overweight.

We've had our collie from 6 months old, had her on a mix of james wellbeloved and Bucher's tripe mix in the beginning.

Now its Tinned Butcher's tripe mix, sometimes Butchers loaf, mixed with any old complete dry mix, (apart from Harringtons as it make her poos really pale a sloppy) she is currently on Hills science plan dry mix as it was on offer.

She also has some of our left over food, she loves cheese crackers for supper, and wotisits.

She's 10 years old, slim, fit and healthy and bounces around like a puppy when meeting dogs on a walk.

Cryalot2 · 29/03/2019 12:37

I think depends on the dog.Age, breed, any needs.
I have a small breed who we went through a range as whilst healthy tended to be prone to being sick.
She was put on a bland special food for 3 weeks,,( I think) nothing else. It was so hard and she cried and didn't eat for a day or 2. . But stuck it out and she is on Royal Canin digestive care. Dry food. She also gets fresh cooked chicken or turkey .
She rarely been sick since.
The vets suggested this as did the trainer.
It seems to work and we have not been to vets with sickness since .
Hope this helps.

EnidPrunehat · 29/03/2019 13:12

My pup was on Wagg kibble when he came home. The effects of which were to convert him from a lurcher into small, hairy, poo-making machine. So I carefully switched him onto Canagan dry food. I'm very impressed. As, incidentally, was the vet.

BorderlineExperimental · 29/03/2019 13:48

My four get a mix of wet and dry plus various other additions.

Dry is MWH. Three get Countryside Mix and one gets Hunter in the morning and a 50:50 mix of Hunter and Countryside in the evening.

I use various different brands of wet as they enjoy the variety: MWH, Forthglade, Nature's Menu (Country Hunter, normal & True Instinct), Edgard & Cooper, Lily's Kitchen, etc. I'll give them pretty much anything with a high meat content.

On a regular basis they also get stuff like sardines, raw eggs and any appropriate scraps.

Miffymeow · 29/03/2019 13:57

Eukanuba large breed puppy. We tried a few different types of dry food, this one is well balanced and his poops are nice and firm and he loves it.

You didn't mention what size your dog is but if you have a large/giant breed puppy then make sure that you are feeding specific food for this. Incorrect food content can lead to too fast bone growth and cause joint issues.

MaitlandGirl · 29/03/2019 14:03

Little miss is fed on Royal Canin Urinary S/O as she has a history of bladder stones (but she’ll eat anything given half the chance) and the boys are fed on Black Hawk Small Breed Grain Free Chicken.

Ddog1 doesn’t do well with wheat in his diet and it’s too ridiculous having 3 different dog foods in the house - we already have to feed little miss separately and the boys are social eaters.

We’re getting another dog later in the year so we’re hoping he’ll take to the Black Hawk as well.

OrchidRosemary · 29/03/2019 14:41

Omg @OrchidRosemary he is so gorgeous,How old is he ?
Labrador pups are the best !

It's hard to remember ours as a small pup ,although he still very much acts like one Grin

OrchidRosemary · 29/03/2019 19:24

@watcherofthenight he's 10 weeks old.
I agree, Labs are amazingSmile

Mynewpup · 30/03/2019 09:41

We have a new Yorkie pup and I'm a bit unsure about his food.

The breeder gave us a bag of Royal Canin but he just doesn't seem to like it. He won't go over and eat it, I have resorted to putting some on my hand Blush and he'll take a nibble now and then.

We tried some chicken and he scoffed it down. But apparently Yorkies suffer with their teeth so dry food is better. The breeder said wet food will rot his teeth.

Any recommendations for a good dry food for diddly little dogs?

adaline · 30/03/2019 09:48

Royal Canin is a really poor quality food - I really don't know why it's so popular Confused

Try something like Lily's Kitchen, Millie's Wolfheart or even Applaws or Wainwright's.

Mynewpup · 30/03/2019 10:17

Thanks adaline I'll have a look online.

WatcherOfTheNight · 30/03/2019 11:32

@Mynewpup Adeline is right ,it's not good a good quality food but it has the price tag of one .
Have a look on the AAD site ,any rated 5 to 4.5 are considered good foods.
Also read through the ingredients section.

Forthglade wet food. I can even get it here in Spain (though it’s expensive).
