Got my frug puppy yesterday, Kevin. He's a lovley pups, 12 weeks old but hasn't yet been trained to walk on a lead. I have attempted to put a harness on him in the house and attached the lead and gave him a treat. He won't walk, he refuses. Any tips? First time I have had a frug so any tips would be appreciated thanks

So a back yard breeder who owns both parents? Not much better TBH. No reason for this mating other than making some cash. Genetic testing and specialist health testing on parents? No. I thought not.
Get that insurance OP. And next time rescue or choose an actual breed from a reputable breeder.

Did i say there wasn't genetic testing or health testing of the parents? Tbh I'm not intreasted in any advice other than the lead situation

The vast majority of extremely brachycephalic dogs do have some degree of breathing difficulty. The University of Cambridge's BOAS Research Group estimate that 85% of FBs and 90% of pugs have some level of BOAS. They've also found that it's very under-reported by owners, with many dogs involved in their studies that have been described as having clear breathing by their owners actually being affected. They have a website with loads of information about BOAS as well as all their research here, it's well worth a read through.

I'd also recommend the FB group Brachycephalic Breathing Awareness. It's run by owners of brachy breeds and is intended to be supportive whilst being open and honest about the difficulties faced by these dogs.

One thing that's not mentioned often enough when brachy dogs and their health issues are being discussed is their dental health. Overcrowding and rotation of the teeth is extremely common in brachy breeds because there's just not enough room in their shortened mouths for a full set of adult teeth. The folds on the roofs of their mouths also tend to be much deeper than in normal breeds. The overcrowded/rotated teeth and deeper folds can both trap food and other debris which means brachy dogs also suffer from very poor oral health. It's a good idea to get any brachy dog happy with having their teeth brushed and mouth closely examined as early as possible.

Not interested.
And that is exactly why so many dog and puppies suffer in this country. People who CBA to consider making a responsible and ethical choice. Bugger animal welfare and health as long as you get what you want.
So selfish.

Can't imagine why you felt it necessary to add the dog's 'breed', other than to goad posters concerned about dog welfare and backyard breeding. Why is it relevant?

Hmm if you don't want comments on the breed, don't tell people. You're always going to get negative reactions when you've decided to get a cross breed of two dogs well known for health issues from a backyard breeder.

Is it me or does “frug” sound like an unsavoury sexual act?

I shouldn't have opened this thread. These threads always annoy me because so many people jump on the OP and start asking totally irrelevant questions. She bought a puppy and was looking for some advice about training which sounds like the actions of a responsible dog owner to me.

The way some of you reply, you'd think she'd been punching fluffy kittens.

She's absolutely not responsible! How is she, exactly?

As others have said, don't mention the breed to dog lovers if you don't want comments.

By buying such an irresponsible cross, you're 100% supporting irresponsible breeding. It's the poor dogs that suffer, but never mind so long as you get your cute pup. Meanwhile across the country perfectly healthy pups continue to get out down day after day when they're not wanted. What a messed up world.

If someone else reads this thread and thinks twice about buying a frug/shipoo/morkie or other ridiculous “breed”, and is informed about these crosses and the health risks/irresponsible breeding practices of said crosses, then that is a good thing.

FFS, designer dogs. When will this irresponsible bollocks end.

And how the fuck exactly will a dog that size "watch the house"?

Report
werideatdawn · 18/01/2019 20:59

And it's not a Frug. Its a mongrel or a Pug cross. There's no such thing as a Frug. It isn't a breed.

Tbf, i have always had yorkshire terriers that are pretty good alarm systems. Plus quite a lot of people are more scared of the ratty thing that may go for their ankles than a bigger dog. I definitely sleep better with a yorkie on guard.

Yorkies are fast though and have a bit of a reputation for being aggressive nippy buggers (treated like dogs rather than babies they’re not, at all) Mine can actually catch a mouse and have it disembowelled before the cat even sees it. Not so sure a wheezing “frug” would have the same effect..

Jesus Christ I bet your glad you started this thread op 🙈

Why is it that no one can start a thread on here without it turning nasty. Did she ask for your opinions about the breed? No. So why not focus your energy on what she actually asked for, a bit of advice about walking her puppy! Sick to the back to teeth of rude obnoxious twats on here!!

Op have you tried taking some treats out with you and wafting them under his nose? I found that worked with my CHORKIE 🤗

What's a Chorkie? Chihuahua and Yorkshire terrier?

Op, our puppy was terrified on her first walk. We kept trying her on a lead in the garden and round the house before we took her out for the first time to get her used to it. She wears a harness as they seem more comfortable.

She was frightened of the cars at first so I carried her a bit so that she felt safe and got used to the noise.

She's 7 and a half months old now and absolutely loves her walks.
