Very naughty Labrador puppy - mean to send him away?

Hello,

I have the most gorgeous Labrador puppy (named Bambi)

He's a little shit.

I work from home, so thought a dog would be good. Hell no. I get no work done, he is so naughty! Biting at my toes... he always wants to play, but I can't do that while I'm working from home.

There's doggy daycare relatively local. Is it mean???

He's not naughty. He's a puppy. What did you except him to do!

Should maybe have done some research before getting a lab. They're full of beans and puppies are harder work than newborns IMO.

Also. You can’t post a puppy thread without a photo of said puppy.

Puppies don't come trained FFS. Imagine a baby always being quiet while you are working. He wants attention. Poor thing.

It’s not mean to send him to a dog daycare but his manners won’t necessarily improve.

How old is he? Mine went to daycare from 12-13 weeks of age when I worked in the office but otherwise was with me when I worked from home.

It is hard but you need to find a way to work and also train them. Maybe get a play pen and some toys such as stuffed kongs, deer antlers etc when you absolutely cannot watch him whilst working.

You were responsible for recognising what you were taking on. He's a baby. He wants to explore and learn about the world, just like any young thing. Puppies are for life, not just for the odd moments you can be bothered about them. No it isn't unfair to put him into day care, although it would do nothing about his behaviour - but it is unfair to blame him for what he is, instead of meeting his needs which is your responsibility because you took him on.

Send him to my daycare. Mind you, it might get expensive sending him by boat or plane, since I’m in NI. One of my first clients was a lab. He is the most gentle soul and was like a big brother to the smaller dogs. He’s an old boy now.

Doggy daycare can be fantastic - our pup loved it and came home exhausted every day. But it completely messed with his training, because he was essentially put in a field with 20 other dogs and no discipline. So if you can find a place that takes fewer dogs and spends some time with them that’s ideal.

Ignore lucy. Mumsnet seems to attract a particular type of dog-loving human-hating individual. Be prepared for the haters if you so much as suggest that your entire life doesn’t revolve around the 4 legged member of your family.

Anyway, talk to daycare. See if they think he'd be of a decent age for it.

My puppy is freaking nuts still he's over a year now.. he is quite awesome though but thinks he is a person

BastardPup does a day a week at Doggy Daycare. I did say they should advertise it as 'give us £20 and we'll knacker your dog out' as it works...

I like Bambi! Have you tried kong and other such delicious distractions?

Frozen kong should keep him still for at least 5 minutes. Also, is he getting enough rest, mine gets especially bitey when she’s tired.

second the kong idea. Or marrow bones (real/raw ones) from a pet food shop are great for soothing, distracting and tiring.
Also - have a look at kikopup on youtube, theres a video called 'capturing calmness' using clicker training that has helped me with my erratic spaniel. The premise is you teach the dog its rewarding to lie quietly as intermittently you will treat them; and you build up from treating every 2-3 seconds whilst the dog isnt looking at you and lying down on a mat at your feet (might be easier to understand on the video haha) to the point where the dog just associates lying quietly by your feet as a pleasurable activity.

Err .... no. I've never found a puppy hard work or frustrating at all. I knew what I was doing when I took on said puppies, and didn't need to post up that they were little shits for not knowing how to behave when I haven't taught them how to. OP knew they worked at home - did they think that working from home equates to well behaved puppies?

Doggy day care might just make his naughtiness worse as he’ll learn from other dogs or the staff may not train his as you would like. Perhaps he needs more trainings/exercise before you start Work tire him out more then give kong and some toys which require him to use his brain.

Puppies are hard going I know and must be frustrating if you’re trying to work and little bambi wants your attention. Perhaps someone can come to walk him after lunch for you tire him out again then he will sleep but young labs are full of energy and mischief - I used to board guide dog pups and most were labs it was exhausting but fun. Currently have a golden retriever who would snooze at your feet. Have fun and hope your toes are safe

Puppies are little bitey buggers. I too had illusions of being able to work from home with a lovely fluffy pup sleeping at my feet and everything being all love and peace. Yeah....

If you can afford it then yes do it, it will get them used to other dogs and also the stimulation they need. X
