I have a permanently installed tall gate across our front doorway, so I can leave the door open in warm weather (our front garden isn't secure).
For toileting, for the first couple of weeks, I took Bracken out on a lead onto the front lawn, walking around saying, "Toilet," over and over again, till she did her business, then I praised her and gave her a treat (I kept a small pot of treats by the door for this).
She's pretty much got it now, so I just let her out on the extending lead while I stand in the doorway, no need for treats any more. She doesn't like going out in the rain, but I just shove her out there and shut the gate - that sends a clear message that she doesn't get back in until she's done toilet. She doesn't take long about it.
It will come; Bracken is 4 months old now, and has the very occasional accident still, but usually only because she doesn't get let out by someone in time. She always goes to the front door now for her toilet; she understands that well now.
