I’ve crying non-stop for 3 days, not slept, it came on literally with a click of the fingers. No unusual walks or anything else to speak of.

Gone from loving tug o’war with squeeky toys, thinking everyone that comes to the house is here for him (& making it known!) , wanting his Kong daily, jumping on the sofa to the following:

Wobbling, unsteady, every time he tries to walk no matter how little the distance, even just from one room to the next

Right foot constantly ‘going under/back on itself’ and on 1 occasion it was stretched straight off the ground and he couldn’t flex it or put it down

Both front legs crossing over each other in attempting to walk

Collapsing, his right leg can’t hold him, his left doesn’t balance him out so he falls forward onto his face/top of his head. Terrifying to see.

Can get up onto my bed to a degree with a real struggle but needs human help to get down

Unbalanced on rear legs 50% of the time

Am beyond desperate and sad. Couldn’t go to work today as he can’t be left for his own safety. 7 year old Dalmatian with no history at all.

Vets & specialist hospital are stumped, even after £7k’s worth of investigations. Only thing showing up is significant inflammation somewhere but arthritis has been ruled out.

Only (& last) option now is MRI on brain, but in the meantime I’m wondering if there’s anything they could have missed. They’ve ultrasounded all internal organs, x-rayed his legs & neck, MRI’d his spine, taken fluids from all joints. Nothing muscular and nothing neuro related apparently.

I just need some words & a handhold. My heart is collapsing with him.

Wonderful news Kneesbend.

knockknockknock · 09/08/2018 17:31

Fantastic news!!

BiteyShark · 09/08/2018 18:57

That's brilliant news and such a relief I bet Grin

BuffysFavouriteStake · 12/08/2018 18:52

That's wonderful news OP, bet you're so relieved. He's utterly stunning BTW!!

Kneesbendarmstretchrarara · 12/08/2018 20:47

Thankyou.

He’s not doing so well now Sad

He doesn’t want to play. Normally before this, even just 3 weeks ago, he’d be dropping toys on my feet in a not-so-subtle hint but now he just looks so sad and a shadow of himself. He likes his squeeky toys still but only lasts 5 or 6 seconds before losing interest.

He is currently behind the sofa not wanting to know us whereas before this, he’d be on the sofa like a rose between two thorns ie me & DH.

His tummy is gurgling so loudly all the time, think it may be the drugs?

The knuckling has started again and he’s falling down roughly once an hour.

More tears from me.

Oh bugger. What's the vet saying now?

Hugs lass.

Kneesbendarmstretchrarara · 12/08/2018 21:08

The vet that urgently referred us to the hospital left a message on my phone on Friday advising he was on duty this weekend & the next 2 weekends after that so he’s around if needed, so I spoke to him last night.

They seem to think the drugs are working (because of the extremely quick improvement initially) but that I need to remember that the hospital advised that the reality is the medicines will take 4-6 months to work properly.

I just keep looking at him to make sure he is still breathing Sad

All bits remain crossed.

Kneesbendarmstretchrarara · 12/08/2018 21:19

Grin Please don’t cause yourself an injury, I couldn’t cope with that as well!! X

I shall uncross the necessary appendages whilst moving about, but at rest they'll all be bundled up into knots again Flowers

BuffysFavouriteStake · 13/08/2018 08:46

All crossed here too Flowers

OrcinusOrca · 20/08/2018 15:22

How's he doing now? Gorgeous boy, glad they think they found the cause Thanks

Kneesbendarmstretchrarara · 20/08/2018 15:41

REAL TIME PIC!!!
His first walk in 3 weeks is happening RIGHT NOW! I am MNing from a field Grin

He is enjoying ‘being a boy’!

Physically he’s baffled the practitioners big-time. Emotionally he isn’t back to himself at all by any stretch of the imagination. He is quiet, subdued, not as interested (aka curious, in your face and nosey!) as he was but I am so grateful to have him with us.

Thankyou for asking and to everyone else who helped xxx

Only just seen this thread and thrilled to see the updates OP.
I was going to say that I have used Davies in the past - they literally saved my girl's life. She was an absolute miracle recovery, so his care is absolutely in the best possible hands.
Fingers crossed for continued progress.

Kneesbendarmstretchrarara · 20/08/2018 15:56

Thankyou, Hodge. They are SO good, aren’t they? The neurologist communicates with me so well.

Only just seen this thread , so pleased your beautiful boy is mending xxx

My old boy had a nasty reaction to dog wormer ( stuff I had used regularly before - had to be the wormer nothing else changed what so ever ) and although the vet said he didn't really get to the true answer of the problem in spite of many tests we were still baffled , I nursed him back to normal but it took months of steady care and lots of mollycoddling

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 20/08/2018 16:15

They really are, Knees. And you’re right - it’s their communication which is so thorough and understanding at a time when you are going through hell.
Onwards and upwards for your gorgeous boy

villainousbroodmare · 20/08/2018 16:20

As a vet, I'd be very interested if you would periodically update on the progress of your
lovely dog.

HomeOfMyOwn · 20/08/2018 22:21

OMG! I nearly could bare to check back after seeing how bad everything looked back when this all started, so to see such a positive update was amazing.

Hope he continues to recover.

HomeOfMyOwn · 20/08/2018 22:21
  • nearly couldn't
slinkysaluki · 22/08/2018 07:54

Could be a spinal problem had this been looked into ?

slinkysaluki · 22/08/2018 07:55

Wobblers disease ?

OrcinusOrca · 23/08/2018 20:58

Ahhhhh so glad he's out and about again! Hope he gets his mojo back soon. Steps in the right direction though x

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 28/08/2018 11:45

Hey OP, how are things? Been thinking about you! x

AgathaF · 29/08/2018 09:51

What a lovely update.

Our old dog had degenerative myelopathy for around 3 years before he died. That caused knuckling (one of the first signs), wobbling and falling, and for him to have much less energy generally. He was also put on drugs which seemed to work well for a couple of months, but then caused lots of different problems and had a reduced effect on the DM so we took him off them.

It's just so very difficult seeing your much loved dog deteriorate.
