Will I still be able to hose down my dog during ban?

My poor GSD is really suffering in this heat. Will I still be able to hose her down..only for a few minutes twice a day during the hosepipe ban? You can use hose for medical response apparently.

TIA

Response = reasons

why not sponge dog down - this is what I do for my dog - or fill a receptacle (dog paddling pool) with water and stand the dog in that. How often do you need to hose the dog down - walk in the cool parts of the day, encourage dog to stay out of the heat by being indoors
I don't think everyone with a hairy dog gets a free pass to use a hosepipe Hmm

BiteyShark · 17/07/2018 14:10

Fill a watering can up with water and pour over. Job done.

VocalDuck · 17/07/2018 14:10

Do you have a downstairs shower?

Datedandold · 17/07/2018 14:10

I think there is a sub section about hosepipe use for cleaning up after animals- not sure it includes showers though 😁

drearydeardre · 17/07/2018 14:12

cleaning up AFTER animals is one thing - hosing a hot dog down (as in a hairy dog who is hot) is something else.

Ploppymoodypants · 17/07/2018 14:13

Well I hose my horse down in this weather! But I will probably use buckets of water from his trough, but let’s face it, it uses the same amount of water anyway.

I have a long haired collie and I have clipped him v short like a Labrador. I know it’s not the done think for German shepherds but unless you are showing him, he might find it much more comfortable. He also jumps in the water trough or I walk him to a stream near us 😁

gamerchick · 17/07/2018 14:13

Can you not just give her a good clippering? I'm sure it'll grow back. Use a shower or a watering can as said above?

Mywifenow · 17/07/2018 14:24

Thanks for the replies. Was hoping someone in the know might say we're exempt. There's no info online.
I'd worry about clipping her and her catching more sun (I've also read gsd fur doesn't always recover).
Already walking her when it's cool...not at all some days:(
Paddling pools are a no-no aren't they?
No downstairs shower but I do have a walk in one upstairs...so will give that a try. Don't know why I didn't think of it though it will probably freak her out.
And yes I suppose a watering can will help a little.

I'm really conserving water in any other way I can. She just really is suffering and I've been quite worried about her panting and not eating much lately. She really loves it too.

Do showers use much less water than a hose?

LapdanceShoeshine · 17/07/2018 14:32

If you would use the same amount of water with buckets as with the hose then use the hose Smile

I do think blanket bans on hosepipe use are a bit pointless. They need to be more specific IMO. No point in watering lawns of course, esp with sprinklers, but no reason not to use a hose for eg plants in containers/recently planted shrubs or perennials.

My small back yard is all containers & I water with a hose for about 5 minutes once a day - I would use the same amount with watering cans, but it would just take way longer. Strictly speaking I’d be in the wrong Confused

(And I’m in Lancashire which is on the verge of starting fracking - have you seen how much water that uses? Hmm)

weasledee · 17/07/2018 14:45

No hosepipes to be used. Buckets, watering cans etc, all ok

reallybadidea · 17/07/2018 14:47

Seriously who is going to know or care if you hose your dog down rather than use buckets?

drearydeardre · 17/07/2018 14:47

if you fill a paddling pool with a watering can and reuse the water in the garden - I assume that is OK - it is not as if you need a lot of water in a doggie paddling pool.
I think the ban should be more specific
no sprinklers
no car washing
no 'running hosepipe'
showers instead of baths
'share a bath' - if anyone remembers the last drought Smile

Mywifenow · 17/07/2018 14:48

I know..if another method uses the same amount it's pointless. I'll try sponging and watering can but if we get 30 degrees again I'll do what I have to

Just carry on. Your dog needs looking after. The hosepipe ban is only going to make a tiny difference anyway.

NameChangedAgain18 · 17/07/2018 14:52

I did last time there was a hosepipe ban. I remember that there was a specific exception for animal care / animal hygiene, etc (can’t remember exact wording).

AlpacaLypse · 17/07/2018 14:55

I'd certainly put dog welfare first. One of our rescues, a GSD cross, made a break for it after a deer yesterday during her early morning walk in cool shady woodland. By the time we got her back - from farmland so in the sun - she was dangerously hot. We put a wet towel on her belly and dipped her paws in water before racing home and standing her in a paddling pool in the garden. She's 100% fine now.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 17/07/2018 14:59

The term hosepipe ban is quite a broad term for what's really a specific set of activities normally undertaken using a hosepipe www.inbrief.co.uk/neighbour-disputes/hospipe-bans/

Animal welfare related things, including things like filling up a trough and briefly hosing down a dog, aren't covered by the ban. I wouldn't, however, put a sprinkler on for your dog to play in Wink

blackbirdbluebottle · 17/07/2018 15:03

Can't you just put the dog in the shower or bath?

Mywifenow · 17/07/2018 16:08

Thanks for the reassurances :)
Blackbird..not easily no and I actually think that would use more water. I spray her quickly and thoroughly. Any longer and she gets too happy and starts dashing around..defeating the object of cooling her.

Mywifenow · 17/07/2018 16:10

Alpaca..aww they are a worry aren't they. I saw the rspca has warned dog owners to be super careful. They have had some healthy dogs dying on walks.

I've been draping a cold wet towel too at night when she can't sleep and put a fan on the floor.

OP posts:
ferrier · 17/07/2018 16:17

Can't believe the responses saying ignore the ban! It's there for a reason. A few buckets of water will have to do or stick her in the bath and yes, a hose does generally use a lot more water than buckets Hmm

Mywifenow · 17/07/2018 16:57

Ferrier Yes I know a hose uses more than buckets. No-one has either asked this question or suggested it to be the case.
There are vague mentions online about exemptions for animal care. This is what I'm trying to ascertain..if there are then I'm not ignoring the ban
