Emergency vet, call in morning or wait and see

Need help!! My pup (7 months) hasn't kept down any meals today. He's just thrown up his dinner. He's drinking and playing as normal (for this heat). He's also eaten the various naughty household items he normal chews up through the day (today's casualties: coloured pencil and plastic hanger). Should I call out of hours vet or wait and see til morning?

If he is drinking and playing, then I would wait and see. My dog was being sick forabout 2 days when he was a pup. It had got to the point that we decided he needed to see vet. Then he threw up the liner from inside a meat tray from the butcher. You know the one that is in the polystyrene tray to soak up the blood? He had got it out of the bin. As soon as that had he was fine!

Because your puppy has eaten things it shouldn't have I would worry about a blockage. Call the emergency vet and they will advise whether it can wait until the morning...I would think maybe not.

A plastic hanger? As in a clothes hanger?
That would concern me, in case it did damage to the intestines/stomach on the way through.
I would call the vet for that reason alone.

Caaarrrl · 05/07/2018 20:37

He's gorgeous BTW! I usually find if they are still playing, then it's not too serious.

Bananarama12 · 05/07/2018 20:38

Lovely pictures Grin

Phone the vet and tell them the symptoms and they will usually advise if he needs to be seen as an emergency or not, the heat and chewing things he shouldn't of would worry me to be honest.

MadCap · 05/07/2018 20:42

Yes a children's clothes hanger but most of it was still on the floor. I just nipped to the loo!

My dog unbeknown to me ate a rag and needed emergency surgery to remove it. That day he vomited in the morning which I put down to an upset stomach and then played at daycare all day running about as if nothing was wrong before deteriorating over night. It could have been so much worse had I waited.

If you 'know' your dog has ate items that can't be digested and could get stuck coupled with vomiting would seriously worry me. Phone the vets and take their advise on whether to wait or not.

MadCap · 05/07/2018 20:45

Thanks all. Will call.

If he's alert and drinking normally I'd wait until the morning.

Tinkobell · 05/07/2018 20:52

Oh. The blockage thing not good....call!

MadCap · 05/07/2018 20:54

Dh just pieced the hanger back together. Only a few small pieces missing.

Pup is currently digging a hole to China in the garden.

With his history of eatingthings id call. Has he poo'd today?

MadCap · 05/07/2018 20:55

Vet said wait and see. I needed to take him in tomorrow anyway to be weighed for his flea stuff.

OP posts:
MadCap · 05/07/2018 20:56

He's pooed at least once. It isn't time for his evening one yet.

LEMtheoriginal · 05/07/2018 20:58

Poo is good. A blockage would, well, block things but keep an eye on things.

MadCap · 05/07/2018 20:59

He has huge poos. Sometimes two baggers.

BiteyShark · 05/07/2018 21:04

Mine had frequent small watery mucous poos every 30 mins over night. It was as if he really needed to poo but just couldn't.

MadCap · 05/07/2018 21:04

Nothing is safe from him. He can reach quite high if he jumps up.

He's learned to pull out chairs so he can climb on top of the dining table. We've had to rearrange the dining room because when got onto the table he managed to climb through the hatch into the kitchen. I found him sat on the worktop! He's not small (currently ~28 kg)!

Dog junk eating story: friend has wheaten terrier. Dog stopped to relieve itself (middle of high street, naturally) starts yelping and there's a long pink mass hanging out the rear end. Friend tugs it, dog yelps and starts rolling around. Pink mass looks like a prolapsed gut...horrendous. Friend calls vet in a panic...while on phone dogs still writhing on pavement. Pink, pooey mass finally falls free. Friend squats to look at it.....it's an Angelina Ballerina Ballet sock! 😂

MadCap · 06/07/2018 09:34

Well he's been sick again this morning so off to the vets in a few minutes. 😢

BiteyShark · 06/07/2018 09:46

Good luck OP. They will probably want to scan him especially as he is known to eat stuff that isn't digestible.

MadCap · 06/07/2018 11:01

The vet checked him over. Temperature, palpated his abdomen (sp?), etc. Didn't scan though. Said he seemed otherwise well in himself. He gave him an anti vomiting jab and some plain tinned food to give him tonight if there's no more vomiting.

Pup walked happily to and from the vets as well (there's a burst water main so had to walk, wouldn't normally walk him in this heat).
