Does anyone know what these symptoms mean?

Yesterday morning, my dog seemed terrified of something. There was no thunder but she was acting the way she does when there is; trembling, trying to ‘hide’ herself, panting and pacing. After an hour or so, she seemed to come good.

24 hours later, and she’s a nervous wreck again. Heavy panting, pacing the house, refusing to leave my side, trying to force herself out the door with me when I left.

I can’t hear or see anything out of the ordinary. Confused I’m about to call the vet, but does anyone have any ideas?

Is she eating and peeing ok? My cairn terrier got very clingy and just out of sorts recently, and then a couple of days later we found he was struggling to pee, it turned out he had bladder stones, so was in a lot of pain. I think the pain came and went as the stones moved around so he wasn't always in pain.

Hope you get to the bottom of it op, it's so horrible when you know something is wrong but they can't tell you what.

HuskyMcClusky · 23/03/2018 04:02

She is eating and toileting normally. She just seems very nervous/upset about something. She has started racing to the door and trying to force herself out with me when I leave the house, which she hasn’t done for about 2 years!

No idea what it might be but a cyber handhold from me and Bluepuppy, also in Australia.

I swear I read a similar post recently but not sure if it was here or on Facebook somewhere.

My dog has managed to eat the rubber cushioning off part of my garage door and made a terrible racket while doing it. In his case though he has diagnosed separation anxiety. Even so he can go months without any issues and then a neighbour will tell me he’s been upset. Who knows what sets them off sometimes Sad

HuskyMcClusky · 23/03/2018 07:34

Thanks, bluetongue.

I just bought her a massive marrow bone as a treat. She has left it untouched (totally unlike her) and gone back to curling on the sofa. 😥

Does anyone know what these symptoms mean?

Aww poor girl. Here's hoping the vet finds out soon what is wrong with her ❤️

SarfE4sticated · 23/03/2018 12:14

Is she different at a different house in another area? Just trying to rule out anything local...

Nesssie · 23/03/2018 14:31

I would suggest a plug in adaptil/calming spray to see if that helps?

But it could well be the aftermath of a seizure, when my dog had one for the first time he acted like he didn't know who I was, growled at me (NEVER happened before), and ran off. Scariest moment of my life as I hadn't witnessed the actual seizure, just walked in after.

I would be worried if he left a marrow bone though, that not a usual behaviour for a dog.

Fingers crossed you work out what it is!

Flomy · 23/03/2018 20:22

Does he go in the garden for a wee?.I just wondered if the neighbours have bought a cat/dog scarer?

"Using a PIR lenses to detect animal movement, Mega-Sonic Repellers emit a burst of high frequency sound to deter unwanted visitors without doing them harm"

HuskyMcClusky · 23/03/2018 20:42

She’s okay in other places and it only happens in the house - although admittedly, we haven’t gone far from the house besides our usual daily walks. And she’s not weird all the time even at home, although she is listless.

Flomy, she does have 24/7 access to the garden through a dog door. I have to say, I am mildly suspicious of my neighbour over the back fence. He is new, and seems...not terribly nice (long story). He throws palm leaves and things over the fence, which doesn’t seem to bother the dog at all, but maybe he has done something else to scare her.

Flomy · 23/03/2018 21:17

Camera on her collar I think.

Maybe he has put a cat/dog scarer up or something else? Hes not throwing food over is he? Mention it to the vet.

SaffyMcDonut · 24/03/2018 23:51

Has anything changed in you that she can smell? Illness, pregnancy etc?

RavenLG · 25/03/2018 00:14

I'd definitely keep an eye on your dodgy neighbour. Can you get any cameras up? Is she acting strange after being outside?

HuskyMcClusky · 25/03/2018 02:28

There’s nothing different with me, no.

She did it again yesterday morning. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear she could hear something terrifying at a pitch I can’t hear. It definitely seems to be fear rather than pain.

The thing is, she’s not looking out into the garden when it happens, she’s looking back into the house.

Yesterday, it went on for about an hour:

  • intermittent violent trembling
  • panting like she’d run a marathon
  • looking around with a frightened expression
  • trying to wedge herself under furniture
  • pacing
  • following me everywhere, including standing outside the shower

I do wonder if your neighbour is doing something deliberately in his house (ok, lets be generous, it may not be deliberate), i.e. a very high frequency sound - this is after what you said in your last post. Your poor poor dog. There must be a piece of equipment available that would detect this. Could you approach your local councils dept for noise control and see if they can help or advise, assuming you have the same local systems that we have. I picked up a decibel monitor (not the same I know) quite cheaply on Amazon, I'm sure something would be available.

Lucisky · 25/03/2018 07:15

I am making assumptions I just realised, that you are attached to your neighbour, whereas you are probably not. However, I suppose sound could still travel easily between the two. Have you eliminated your own house yet? Next time she has a 'turn', turn off your power to eliminate your own devices.

Lucisky · 25/03/2018 07:19

Just one other thought - have you bought, or had installed, anything new that is electrical recently?
Your dog is behaving exactly as our old dog did with both fireworks and the smoke alarm. It certainly sounds like a noise thing to me.

ButtertubsPass · 25/03/2018 07:40

Sounds really awful OP.

You can get apps that make sounds only dogs can hear so if your neighbour is that way inclined he could be tormenting your dog.

Beyond belief really but you can.

Poor dog.

Chapterandverse · 25/03/2018 08:04

How is ddog doing Husky?

His behaviour really reminds me of how our beautiful girl would react when either our tumble dryer or cooker fan was on!

I hope you can get to the bottom of it.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 25/03/2018 14:15

That is very strange, Husky. The dogs here seem to have all settled down, but I was getting a bit edgy, thinking they knew something we didn't. It does sound more like fear than pain to me, but that doesn't really help you too much. I put a couple of my patients on diazepam for a couple of days to try to break the cycle. Haven't seen them back, so whether it worked or whether the scary thing went away I don't know! Hope your girl gets back to normal soon.

Flomy · 26/03/2018 20:41

I'm still sure it is a noise from somewhere.

Is it the same times every day?

HuskyMcClusky · 26/03/2018 23:48

I agree with everyone that it’s noise. Nothing else really makes sense.

I’m horrified to hear that there’s an app like that, Buttertubs. Shock

Does anyone know if there is an app or instrument of some sort that I can buy that I could detect such a noise with?

Every other day, she’s done it in the morning. Yesterday she did it in the afternoon. I’m getting really stressed about this as I’ve been working from home but I need to go out sometimes. I can’t stand the thought of her home alone trembling in terror.

SarfE4sticated · 27/03/2018 00:24

Can you get dog ear plugs? Have you had a chance to speak to your neighbour yet?
Feel awful for your dog :(

HuskyMcClusky · 27/03/2018 00:28

I’ve spoken to my neighbours on both sides; they both have dogs and theirs are completely fine. The houses are all fully detached so it’s nothing coming through the walls, IYSWIM.

Can dogs wear ear plugs?? I can’t imsgine her letting me put them in. Off to google...

Here you go Mutt Muffs! Grin

StaplesCorner · 27/03/2018 00:51

Is there anywhere you can go and stay with her for a couple of days? Do you have hotel chains that take dogs near you]? (in Uk we have Travelodge and they take dogs) Or a friend/family?

If she is calm elsewhere then you know its something in or around your house.
